Its a shame…I can never seem to like the colours in the VG Nicki collections…usually too bright for my tastes, and well this combination here is too cool-toned for my NC50 golden undertone self!

Nikki Avatar

I agree. I’m also an NC50 girl, and as much as I like Nicki Minaj and would love to support Viva Glam, she has yet to come out with a MAC make up product that I feel I wouldn’t have to tweak to make work for myself. I hate buying a product knowing I’ll have to play around with it because I know that eventually, I’ll stop using it regularly. As a woman of color herself, I wish Nicki would have designed a product that is more universally flattering for all skin tones this time around. I feel all her products thus far have been better suited for fair to medium skin tones. 🙁

Edani Avatar

I’m interested in the lipstick, but this photo is somewhat off-putting. Between the confusion on her feet (the shoes are lovely, but what’s going on with the straps) and the terrifying look on her face? She is a beautiful lady, but this photo isn’t flattering at all.

Edani Avatar

I really don’t know what’s going on with the shoes, didn’t say they were photoshopped, just confusing me. It was one of the first things my eyes went to, and my brain went “Whu…huh?” But I suppose I’m being nit-picky. The expression on her face is what throws me off the most, almost making me NOT want to buy the lipstick. (It remains to be seen whether or not it’ll actually be flattering to my ultra-pale skin.)

Laura Avatar

Why do they keep pumping out Nicki Minaj lip products? They’re always really unflattering shades and this looks to be the worst. Wish they’d get someone new for the Viva Glam. You know your gonna get a really bright, in your face lippie with Nicki. I’d like to see somebody new with more neutral or classic colours,

Riana Avatar

They keep putting them out because her lipstick was the highest selling Viva Glam lipstick in the company’s history, the Lipgloss also sold very well and considering all sales go to charity it’s a smart decision to promote a high seller again.

Jennifer S Avatar

Her again.? I’m over Nicky, I’d rather see anyone else at this point. Oh yeah and some wearable colors too. That last wearable color was MAC viva glam Cindy. I love that shade.

Amy Avatar

I love all the “less natural” and more fun lip colors 🙂 Especially since all the other stuff they’ve been coming out with are boring colors. I do wish this was a true lavender though.

Alexis J. Avatar

It’s sad, because I find so many of the other Viva Glam products to be more universally flattering. These recent shades seem harder to pull off. Oh we’ll, it’s all for a great cause and I’m sure a lot of people are excited for the release! I will happily wait for the next VG collaboration.

Monica Avatar

I agree. I feel like the original Viva Glams were based off the idea that anyone could wear it…they seemed to have tossed that out of the window, though. I personally love bright/pale pinks and things (I’ve purchased all the Viva Glam lipsticks since the Fergie campaign), but most people aren’t going to wear two lip liners and a lip gloss just to make their lipstick wearable. It’d be nice if they made something more along the lines of…Viva Glam V, I believe. Everyone seems to love that color.

Quinctia Avatar

If more Nicki Minaj Viva Glam stuff means more pastel creams that are limited on who they’re flattering on…then it’s probably time to get someone else in there. Not even necessarily a replacement, just a second person so there’s another option?

Quinctia Avatar

I’m sure it pulls different due to undertone, and I know it’s got a certain saturation to it! But it still gave off the pastel sort of vibe to me, haha.

The fact they did Gaga twice and both were nudes is kinda meh, too. But at least one of the Gaga offerings was paired with the Cyndi color, which was drastically different. Nicki was only paired with lip balm before.

Natalie Avatar

Christine- when you swatch these could you please tell us how they compare to “Blooming Lovely” lipstick from the Liberty of London collection from awhile back? Thanks!!

Christina Avatar

yes please – I own and treasure that lavender colour! I find it “non-pink” though, in the tube and on my lips. So I wonder if this may be even more wearable with pink in it?

Jessica Avatar

Im prob gonna pass.. Its not the colour for me.

– Hey Christine, have you tried the lip glosses from Two Faced?? It has this “gentle” plumping ingredient in it. I tried it today and it actually didn’t hurt my lips like the usual lip injection gloss Two faced actually sells. I know you usually have lip problems when it comes to lip pumpers so I figured you might wanna check out these ones 🙂

Jessica Avatar

Ohh I didn’t know you had an allergy! Sorry about that. I just thought it always hurt you like it does for me… Okay don’t try it 😉 haha

erin Avatar

i dont’ know about the color, but kudos to MAC for putting the entire amount of the selling cost to the charity, not just the profits or a percentage. that is impressive!

Sarah Avatar

I don’t know this Nicki (not famous in Germany). I think a new model would be overdue… the lipsticks look so tacky and so does she. Plus, the colors are hardly wearable. Nicki’s too special a character, I’d rather take a face that is better known all over the world (since she’s supposed to be an embassador for their campaign) with a look more agreeable 😉

Sara Avatar

really? She’s famous in Denmark and I’ve heard her songs on the radio while in Germany. I think many of the models or collaborations done in the past are done with celebrities or models that are not known to ALL people, so I don’t see why there’s something wrong with using Minaj. I do agree though that I would like a change of models now.

Nicoco Chanel Avatar

Wearable is different for everyone! I love lavender pinks, personally. Besides, the normal VG line is full of more neutral shades.

Though, I do wish they’d bring in some other celebs, but it makes sense. She’s a massive deal atm.

HANNHUNG Avatar

I’m with you guys. What a bad rep for the company. There are so many beautiful and positive Women in the World. Why her at all? And… it’d be wonderful to see a Women in her late 30’s or in her 40’s.

MACAddict22 Avatar

That was before my time. I didn’t realize RuPaul was a spokesperson for MAC before. That would be amazing to bring him back. I’d buy whatever the lipstick shade.

Miss J Avatar

Yup, RuPaul was one back in the day. Dita Von Teese, Elton John, Mary J. Blige, Eve, Fergie, Pamela Anderson, Christina Aguilera, and some others have all been used as spokespeople. 🙂

Yellowlantern Avatar

One person’s awful color is another person’s HG. Different strokes for different folks. The Viva Glam line has other kinds of colors.

Maria Wilson Avatar

I think this looks GORGEOUS. Unconventional but still probably beautiful. Can’t wait to see the swatches. I will probably be picking this up.

Emily Avatar

I don’t care too much for the personality but the color looks interesting. It’s a fresh and exciting departure from the ubiquitous corals/peach/orange shades from this year.

Miss J Avatar

I really love Viva Glam Nicki (1), but I’m not sure I could work a light purple lipstick, lol. The gloss looks more doable, though, so I might get that. I like the fact that they started doing more fun colors for the campaign, but I do wish they’d still add the more “wearable” colors to the permanent Viva Glam line. Why not come out with Viva Glam VI SE again, but make it permanent? Or another shade?

Can’t wait to see some swatches of these! But Lord, just wish they would have chose a better photo. Her face in that photo… :/

Mariella Avatar

there’s nothing about Nicki Minaj that “speaks to me” (and I think this would be the case even if I were younger) – not her music and certainly not her “look”. Same applies to the makeup that MAC keeps slapping her name on…so far, none of that has been my cup of tea either.

paris Avatar

I find it funny how so many people have a problem with nicki having a second viva glam shade lady gaga had two and neither one was a for everybody shade I have two of the first gagas I’m going to get this because its fun alllllll of the other shades are not flattering on everybody from the permenant line I can only wear 2 and 5 and at the end of the day put all the nicki hating to the side and realize the good this line does.

Quinctia Avatar

The first Gaga was paired with the Cyndi shade that was a nice contrast. I don’t disagree that it was a bit disappointed that the two Gaga releases were as similar to each other as the Nicki releases seem to be. Nicki’s first shade was paired with a lip balm, so it seems like a couple releases in a row with only stuff in Nicki’s style.

Nicoco Chanel Avatar

I think it’s probably because Nicki is following up Gaga. If Gaga had been followed up by someone who created more universal or subtle shades, THEN Nicki, I don’t think people would have complained because there was variety. But Gaga’s crazy shades followed by Nicki’s crazy shades is a bit much.

Riana Avatar

I think the reality is these shades are geared towards the style of the particular star they choose. Gaga had neutral lips because when it comes to it she usually does bold eye makeup with neutral lipsticks or bold lips with neutral eyemakeup.

With Nicki she has worn very bold lipstick so they’re not going to pick her to create her own Viva Glam and then design shades she doesn’t wear.

Veronica Avatar

Revlon actually has a Super Lustrous lipgloss in a lavendar/lilac shade that’s really great. It wears suprisingly opaque, too!

(Not to dissuade you from the Viva Glam campaign, but it’s an option! :D)

Veronica Avatar

Hnn, what an interesting shade! I have a Revlon Lip Butter in lavendar, but it wears fairly sheer. If this wears more opaque, I might have to give it a look.

Given her intense popularity right now, I can see why they felt Nicki Minaj would work for the campaign, though I echo the sentiment that I feel more universal shades would probably work better for the charity in the future. (I second whoever said Viva Adele! That would be awesome. :D)

Katrina Avatar

This ad reads like subliminal advertising gone wrong; definitely not subtle enough. I’m actually kinda grossed out. Leave just for the bad ad campaign.

Lou Avatar

I like Nicki and I liked viva glam Nicki, you can tone it down a bit by using a small amount and blending it in. The visual for this new campaign is a bit off putting, her makeup makes her look a bit scary

Stacey Avatar

Plastic plastic plastic…..the ad is so plastic looking….like a cartoon. Why are there two shades of lipstick on the pic and only one shades being sold?

Claire Avatar

Really not liking the visual for this – she looks like she just got out on day release! Between the odd shoes, ridiculously pumped up boobs, and that “I might kill you tonight” grin I’m just not feeling it. And that pose is driving me mad!

It won’t deter me from the products though – they look nice, will have to wait for Christine’s swatches before I make up my mind though!

MACAddict22 Avatar

I am so excited for a lavender Viva Glam lipstick. FINALLY! MAC heard my prayers. I love anything lavender. I will be buying two of these bad boys. It’s for a great cause. I just hope it comes out lavender on my lips and not pink. I’m tired of pinks and reds to be honest. Bring on the funky colors MAC!!!

Farjana Hossain Avatar

This is reminding me of Lavender Whip from a few years ago. I could not get Lavender Whip but I have been on the hunt for it for years. It is not for everyone but you can mix it to make it wearable. The cause is great and the color looks beautiful :). I am looking forward to this lippie.

Marissa Avatar

I like the products and the cause but I hate how they keep using Nicki Minaj. She’s a horrible role model and the promo pictures are disgusting. Please, MAC. Find someone a bit more respectable…

hairspray Avatar

she was chosen because she is from the an area where hiv/aids its at its highest infection rate right now and mac is focusing on bringing attention there and she also has family who has passed away from hiv/aids

Whitney Smith Avatar

So excited to try out this shade! I have supported the Viva Glam AIDS cause since Lady Gaga released her two lipsticks, and I’m definitely curious to try out a lavender lipstick! 🙂

VJNS Avatar

If they sell out I will NEVER buy another MAC product again (ok, MAYBE I won’t). But they do sell out so quickly I get frustrated with them.

Cassie Avatar

Wow, I looking at the picture I don’t even think the lipstick looks good on her at all. Didn’t like the Gaga’s or Nicki’s. I also find these two artists so contrived and past VG reps and I remember Shirley Manson, Boy George, K.D. Lang, Eve, Elton John,Pamela Anderson,Dita Von Teese,Christina Auguliera,Ru Paul and I think Cyndi fits in with the above people who really were ground breaking, creative and genuine strong personalities. I think Adele would be perfect as well, she fits the description. Not the one-up shock (boring) people with whole teams who work on every aspect of their “persona”. Give me Mary J. Blige any day.

Riana Avatar

To anyone wondering the reason why Nicki was chosen to represent Viva Gam again is due to the fact her lipstick became the highest selling Viva Glam lipstick in the company’s history. It outsold every single Viva Glam made prior to it and her Lipgloss also sold quite strongly. I think MAC just looked at the numbers and realized it’d be smart to bring her back again. All money made from the lipsticks goes to AIDS research, the more money made off the campaign the more people can be helped. I’m not sure how I feel about the color (if it’s like Airborn Unicorn then I’ll be in love) but I am happy that ultimately so much money is going towards a good cause.

Mo Avatar

If you like the shade, get it. It will go towards a good cause. I wouldn’t let the promotion of a singer that I didn’t care much for stop me from getting a color I liked. I don’t care for Justin Bieber but let MAC come out with a bangin shade with his name on it. I’m on it. LOL! I didn’t know who Azealia Banks was but I was all over that Yung Rapunxel lippie. Haha!

Parinas Avatar

I will this one too, because I am a nicki fan.:)
For the people who are asking why this is the second time Nicki is the face for viva glam, look at Gaga last year, she was 2 times too.
The look at the numbers…Gaga was more popular than cindy so she could do this a second time.Just like Nicki her lipstick was more popular than Rickys Lip conditioner.

Codiee Avatar

Personally, I love lavender shades on myself in general. When Quite Cute out of the quite cute collection came out, It was my go to color for spring when I wanted to wear a neutral eye. So this is a definite yes for me. I recently got her first lipstick for Christmas, and it’s amazing. Although Nicki is a very controversial person (I’ll admit even though I love her), I do think that MAC should include some more powerful women for viva glam in the future. Maybe even Madonna? I’d love to see RuPaul have a FULL MAC collection, but that’s another cup of coffee. However, if someone loves this lipstick and won’t buy it simply for the spokesperson for it, you’re quite ignorant. Every penny of viva glam lipstick goes to the AIDS fund, not Nicki whatsoever. Personally I’d buy this lippie regardless of who the artist was or if I even liked the shade, because of the cause, and simply because I don’t think anyone could have enough lip products! 🙂

Yoli Avatar

I want both products!! I passed on Viva Glam Nicki 1 products, but these I’m digging. I wonder how the lipstick will compare to the infamous Lavender Whip?

The Knockout Avatar

I have to ignore the posters cause I think they dont do the colors any justice….
I am not a fan of her makeup looks or even her makeup artist they make her look too clown like not really Barbie but a circus clown. Reminds me of past Illamasque posters with the clown style of makeup… None of my Barbies makeup looked like Nicki so there choice with her makeup on the ads are very questionable.. With that being said the colors are gorgeous esp for dark skin tones.. I have both lipsticks and Gaga Pink.. All three awesome and beautiful when paired with the right lip liner!

Emme Avatar

Christine, does the lipglass compare to Budding Love lipglass at all? Also, what kind of blush would you apply with this colour to make the overall look more wearable? 🙂 Thanks!
