Urban Decay Wants to Put a Vice Grip on Your Wallet

Urban Decay Vice Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.60 oz.) contains 20 never-before-seen shades of eyeshadow for the holidays. Each eyeshadow is 0.03 oz. (a full-sized Urban Decay eyeshadow is 0.05 oz.), and the palette also includes a double-ended eyeshadow brush (about a $20 value). Readers have reported seeing it at select Macy’s stores already, but it will be available officially on September 27th and on Urban Decay’s website mid-September.

I’m still working on writing up the review for this (and figuring out dupes), but I didn’t want to delay the swatches, so here you go 🙂

Ugh, I was psyched about Jagged. What make people from UD think that that kind of formula for an e/s is good ?! It gonna make a hell of a fall out on my face 🙁

Jagged and Provacateur look like glitter bombs. And they can tell me these are new shades all they want but most of them still resemble colors in their permanent line. Also, How many gold/copper/bronze colors can UD make?

Thanks for the swatches Christine 🙂

kendo Avatar

The only shade that looks impressive (and/or isn’t a teensy variation on an existing shade) is Chaos. And I wouldn’t wear it as an eyeshadow. So… pass.

Jax Avatar

Half I love, Half I would never use.
The half I love I already have some similar, if not actual dupes.
Probably won’t buy it for that reason but can’t wait to see what dupes there are for Junkie, Chaos and Unhinged
(I really need to get more green>teal>blues in my collection :-D)

Zainab Avatar

Kind of surprised at how underwhelming some of these are… What’s up with ‘Jagged’?! Some do look quite lovely though (especially ‘Junkie’ and ‘Rapture’).

Jennifer McCandliss Avatar

Thank you for getting this up so fast. Most of the swatches look great. I wonder if people realize how much effort you put into even just finding duped. I’m excited to see your review as you add it. Thank you Chritine.

I am hyperventilating over the gorgeousness of most of these shadows. Jagged seems aptly named – you can see the jagged, fall-out type glitter bits in it and it looks like it will be the loser in the palette but it look so lovely in the pan. Rapture (another perfect name for what looks a fabulous colour), Armor, Vice, Unhinged, Occupy, Junkie and Muse all look totally irresistible – I can hardly wait for this to launch here in Canada.

Kafka Avatar

I just got an email from Urban Decay stating that it’s available on their site right now. But thank God for you and those swatches because they make me pause in my tracks. The glittery ones look BAD, esp. “Jagged” which initially had really caught my eye. “Laced” looks invisible on your skin; I suppose there are times when that’s useful but… :\ On the other hand, “Occupy” is stunning!! “Junkie,” “Rapture,” “Armour” & “Vice” are kinda pretty, but 5 out of 20 shades…. Hm.

Carrie Avatar

Yikes. Jagged and Provocateur look like they belong with Midnight Cowboy shades in term of their fall out. Most of the rest of the shades look pretty good in their pigmentation (though the lighter mattes look iffy) but I can’t help but feel there are a lot of near dupes to other colors that UD already puts out, especially from the 15th anniversary palette.

Flow/Penny Lane
Chase/Never Mind
Junkshow/Noise (thought that looks a touch ligher and more pigmented)

I’d love to get my hands on Freebird and Junkie but they aren’t enough to get me to grab the whole thing. Maybe they’ll come out in another palette :p

Sudeki Avatar

That’s exactly what I thought.
Although I made an order right away last night, but I can’t stop thinking I thrown $$ on another bos.
Don’t you remember ud said last yr bos4 is the last bos, right the next year release vice! And most of shades you can find very similar in bos2 and 3, only slightly change, given a new name-_-
The packaging is much improved though..

I’m in love with Chaos, such a wonderful blue unlike any blues I’ve seen before. Too bad that that Jagged and Provocateur look so sheer and gritty. Those will definitely have a lot of fall-out. If it weren’t for those 2 colours the palette would be perfect.

kate Avatar

Well, Jagged looks like it lives up to its name and Provocateur likewise seems like the kind of thing I’d happily skip. While there may be dupes for these in the regular UD lineup, I don’t have enough of their shadows to make this a write-off for me. Many of the shades look like they have really nice colour payoff and the value (assuming you don’t have dupes) is definitely there.

Melody Avatar

I’m only really falling hard over Chaos so I don’t think I’ll be picking this up. I can’t pay $59 when I only love one shadow. Hope they release that one individually sometime.

Megan Avatar

When it comes to Urban Decay, I love colors and neutrals. Typically when they release palettes I’m normally more drawn to the colors, especially blues, purples, and greens. But this palette has me craving the more neutral shades. Desperation, Blitz, Penny Lane, Provocateur, Echo Beach, Freebird, and Laced are screaming my name, ha ha. Noise, Vice, Rapture, Chaos, and Junkie are also drawing me to this palette. Occupy and Armor also seem really nice. Ah, I’m so torn between this and two holiday items from Guerlain’s line.

TLC Avatar

I will be picking up this palette as soon as I can get my hands on it. I think most of the colours are great, but most of all, the palette appears to be very easy to travel with. I really love Chaos, Junkie, Vice and Occupy.

Rachel Nichols Avatar

I’m always surprised when people complain that too many colors of the brand look alike. UD can’t like INVENT new colors! Haha they have a very large eyeshadow range in my opinion. If you already own them all maybe that’s a sign.. That’s what I’ve told myself anyway 🙂

xamyx Avatar

For me, at least (I can’t speak for others), it’s not so much that the shades are pretty much the same, but that they slap a new name on most of the shades so consumers think they’re truly getting new shades. I would personally like to see them use the same “old” shades with the original names so I don’t end up with shades that are, for all practical purposes, dupes; it just seems very dishonest to me.

Emme Avatar

Too much shimmer and glitter. :,( I’m 34 and I can’t leave the house looking like a disco ball! Some of these are so glittery that the pigment seems to crumble off the skin. I really wish UD included more matte shades in their pallettes. Too many shimmers are bordering on foil!

LOREAL RUNWAY COLLECTION QUADS (Mystic quad…has a color just like CHAOS…in it so theirs your dupe…they just released these at rite aid, cvs, etc. I HAVE thw quad…looks the same!

Patricia Avatar

That Jagged eyeshadow bothers the heck out of me! It looks like dirt mixed in with glitter. I don’t know why it bothers me so much consider how many colors there are to choose from. haha.

xamyx Avatar

I clicked “Loving It”, because this does really seem like an awesome palette; however, I will likely be “Leaving It”, as I have at least one dupe, that you mentioned in the subsequent posts, for prretty much each shade (at least the shades I actually wear). For those just starting out with eyeshadow and/or UD, this would be a tremendous addition to their stash.

KK Avatar

I really wanted to like this palette because I love the name–I’m a member of my office’s Vice Unit and prosecute drugs and guns, haha–but I really, really dislike sparkle and I’ve never had any luck with any of Urban Decay’s sparkle, glitter, or shimmer eyeshadows (meaning anything with pieces of it, not just a frosted or metallic finish), so there’s too many in the palette for me to justify buying it. Sad face 🙁

I wish you had an nc45 + friend you could swatch on. I know you’re response wiil be that there are nc45ers out there in beauty blog land with swatches but in reality most don’t have the same access to the resources that you have. There’s only one Temptalia. You have a wide audience but a lot of us want to be included. So make an nc45 + friend. Please.

Christine Avatar

Hi Maebee,

I often swatch for 3-4 hours in a row, and I might swatch at 11PM at night or 9AM in the morning or 2PM in the afternoon. I might swatch four days in a row. My friends are just that, friends, not slaves to my work schedule — they all work full-time jobs. It’s not something I’m personally comfortable with, because of the demands I’d have to make on their time, and I prefer to keep my work life and personal life separate. Perhaps you should start your own blog so you can fill the void! 🙂

I have a dilemma! I love both the Urban Decay Vice Eyeshadow and the Ocho Locco Pencil Set. I want both, but I can’t afford them. I think they are both the same price, but which one do you think I should get?
