Essie Go Overboard Nail Lacquer
Let’s Go Diving with Essie’s Go Overboard
Essie Go Overboard Nail Lacquer ($8.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as “a limitless sea blue.” It’s a deep, almost inky, blue with subtle hints of teal–you might call it a very blue teal or a teal-tinged navy blue. MAC Deep Sea is greener and much, much darker. Rescue Beauty Lounge Teal is a bit darker and greener. Illamasqua Viridian is more of a teal. Nothing I could think of was close; everything that was even remotely similar was significantly darker.
What I liked about Go Overboard was the blue is very apparent; it’s not so dark that it loses its color in natural light. The formula wasn’t too thick or too thin, so it applied fluidly and evenly across the nail without bubbling or pooling along the sides. I only needed two coats for opaque color, though it was rather opaque after one. I typically get very good wear out of Essie’s formula; a full week with no chipping and minimal tip wear.

What a pretty teal! I’m a sucker for teal and blue polishes, so I might have to go pick this one up.
Also, I love the little captions you’re putting on reviews–“More Disappointment from Chanel,” “Let’s Go Diving with Essie’s Go Overboard”… I think they’re cute.
Such a pretty color! Add this to the list of polishes to get!
Gorgeous! Wish I had Dita Von Teese nails so I could do a French with this and Storm Bird… LE Sigh
I’m on a np no buy but I know my boyfriend would love this color so I’m gonna make him buy it for me!
I think Essie is my favorite nail polish brand. They have so many amazing colors, an easy to use formula, and is available at CVS. Love this color!
This is gorgeous…I keep saying that I don’t love blue nail polishes on me, but then I like them in swatch pictures! Contradicting myself yet again…
@annedreshfield Wow, that is so interesting, Anne! I love green nail polish and I have the exact same problem. I bought this gorgeous shade of bright yellow green nail enamel from Illamasqua and it’s hideous 🙁 . Are you cool toned? Maybe it draws in too much to your skin undertones?? I think that is why I can’t wear many greens.. they make my skin look so disgustingly green!
@wwendalynne Yes, same! I am cool toned — fair skin, blonde hair, blue eyes, pink undertones. My hands also turn purple in the cold, so I doubt that would look good with green, lol! I also feel like a little kid whenever I have blue nail polish on. Not sure why…I’d say my favorite blue polish is Butter London’s Lady Muck. At least, that’s the only one I ever wear!
@annedreshfield Raynaud’s phenomenom and me are also well acquainted.. not so sexy, huh? LoL
I just looked up Lady Muck and it’s really pretty! I wear Blagger from Butter London which is a bit similar to this, but brighter and lighter. I also wear Blue Label by Dior. I’ve got a perfect blue for you, but you will have to buy on eBay as it came out only in an Asian market release: Dior Glacier. The name is very appropriate and it’s so elegant on. I get tons of compliments whenever I wear it. Have a good night Anne 🙂
@annedreshfield Oohh just caught some mani pictures on-line and Lady Muck looks almost like a light periwinkle. That would look so pretty on my toes while wearing denim! Nice pick!!
@wwendalynne Dior Glacier looks like a lighter, frostier, sheerer version of Lady Muck! So pretty. I think that’s a more versatile shade, though I’ve got nothing against Butter London’s Blagger — looks gorgeous in the swatches!
Such a lovely shade of navy! I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like it before.
Beautiful shade of blue. Too bad that Essie is so expensive here in Slovenia.
I think this is such a beautiful shade, especially for fall. I can definitely picture this going with a lot of my fall outfits. I will be purchasing this one! Thanks, Christine!
How do you think it compares to MAC Screening Room? TIA!
@Carol F Screening Room is teal, lighter – http://www.temptalia.com/mac-reel-sexy-nail-lacquers-review-photos-swatches
Teal-blue is one of my favorite colors! I actually just got some dark teal capri pants, but I think those are actually greener than the polish. I’ll keep this shade in mind for winter!
I bought this colour a few months ago and love it – it looks awesome with Essie’s pearlescent top coat, too.
Love this saturated blue and it reminds me ever so slightly of a Butter London shade I own.
Gorgeous!
Can someone tell me which collection this is from?
@jennyh Go Overboard is the collection name 🙂
It reminds me of American Apparel Peacock, but Peacock might be lighter and dustier.
Has anyone mentioned “Ski Teal We Drop” O.P.I. dupe for this color? It honestly looks exactly the same.
@redawe I totally agree with you! It very much looks like s
Ski Teal We Drop! such a nice color…
This color is calling my name! Nordstrom here I come.
Stunning! Anyone have any recommendations for base/top coats with essie polishes/varnishes though? I can’t get the formula to work too well on my nails with my OPI..?? Thanks for the review Christine! x
@BPJ_Ellie I don’t know about topping other things on essie colors since the only bottle of essie I have is the essie Good To Go topcoat. I use it on a variety of brands including the cheapest of cheap and love it. It extends wear tremendously and doesn’t dry tacky (once dry you can scratch the surface with your other nails and they glide smoothly instead of sticking). I assume essie tested its topcoat on essie colors so you might have to keep within the brand for layering?
Brilliant, thanks Busted! Might have to go get some Essie base/top coats now! 🙂 Thanks again for the reply! xx
you’re welcome!
I have this and it’s a lovely color, but it chips majorly in two days, even with a base and top coat. Super annoying : /.
I absolutely LOVE this colour its gorgeous!
Blah! Nordstrom exclusive. Would have picked this up to as I’m a sucker for teals.
@Ani_BEE Saw it on bloom.com too!
@Ani_BEE I picked it up at Target a month ago, actually. So I really don’t believe it’s an exclusive.
@Ani_BEE I actually bought it from Walgreens a few months ago.
i got mine at walmart.
I got this about a month ago and it’s really a fantastic teal. The formula is seriously great and my experience is pretty similar with yours.
I love this color but will look to purchase something similar in either OPI or Butter London. Essie is my least favorite polish as I find the formula to generally be thin and chip very easily on natural nails. It’s a waste of my time to do an Essie manicure while I can usually get a week’s wear out of OPI, China Glaze, Orly, or Butter London!
@chicgeek Oooooooo what a fun colour! I have a bright red/Orange and yellow to try to!
Reminds me a bit of the Dior color Nirvana would have to see it up close but I just had the Nirvana on and looks like it a lot. I also have a butter london color don’t know the name off hand that is a bit brighter then the Nirvana I have swatches on my blog page
