Skintone/coloring: very pale, dark brown hair and eyes. Definitely cool-toned!
Where do I apply my makeup: Usually my bedroom (but the lighting is a bit too warm), or the bathroom, where the lighting is more neutral.
Lighting: I prefer the neutral lighting in my bathroom. Sometimes I don’t even need to turn on the light in there and I can just use the natural light through the window.
What would I change: I wish the lighting in my bedroom were neutral. I also have a very disorganized stash – makeup and brushes scattered throughout the house, that sort of thing. How does that even happen??

I use the sunlight that comes through the windowWhat would you change about your makeup set-up?  I’d love a place where I can sit and have everything accessible.  Right now, my make up is in a couple different places, as there’s no where to put it by the window.

Christine-Temptalia Yes, I have a plastic mirror (works well, actually) that I prop on the windowsill.  Then I have to kind of hunch over it to see and get the right light.  I typically put on my makeup with my glasses off so I have to get really close to the mirror.  It’s the best spot in the house, lighting-wise, but I can’t put a seat or anything there because it’s right by the door to my husband’s closet 🙂

Skin tone/coloring: Fair-Light (fighting sudden onset melasma right now)Where do you apply your makeup: In master bedroom at an antique desk that sits under a large window. I have a lighted mirror w/1x and 10x sides.Lighting type: Usually natural unless I’m getting ready at 0-Dark-Thirty. Then I use the lighting from my lighted mirror. What would you change about your makeup set-up? I would take over our guest bedroom and turn it into a beauty studio with professional lighting and a makeup table/mirror setup like Pursebuzz has, but it’s loaded with 300+ euro boardgames and my husband’s MIDI equipment. I’ll have to wait until my son moves out so I can take over the 3rd bedroom.

Thanks, Christine. I look absolutely CRAZY without foundation right now — like brown blush gone way wrong on NW25 skin! Ugh!

divinem1  I so love your idea!!!  and I eventually will have my dream make-up room too 🙂  Your remark about lighting type made me laugh.  I remember trying to apply some business type makeup at 4:00 in the morning so I could scream to the airport and catch the early flight to NYC and be delivering a presentation by 9:00 a.m.  Trouble with this..lighting!!  A couple of times I would arrive at the airport and walk into the bathroom to see I had done a pretty lousy job and had feverish cheeks from hell!!  LoL

divinem (Melissa) Avatar

My lighted mirror, while wonderfully convenient for checking for flaws with my eyeshadow placement/brows, etc., fails miserably with its lighting. It’s just not enough in a dark room at 4:30am.

It’s horrible to finish a business meeting followed by a trip to the restroom and the horror of discovering I’ve made some major makeup mistake like forgetting to blend something out, cos no one is going to tell you to your face you look like a clown! UGH!

Your skin tone/coloring: Light/Medium OliveWhere do you apply your makeup?  At my bedroom desk in front of the window (with a tiny little handheld mirror) if it’s super sunny outside, but most of the time in my bathroom with the big mirror. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with?  Either minute sunlight, if I can do it in my room, or the overhead/mirror light in the bathroom (a 6-bulb bar light that sits over top of the mirror, so it’s quite bright). What would you change about your makeup set-up? Everything. It gets incredibly hot in my bathroom and there are no windows, so I typically hate doing makeup in there. But my bedroom faces–of all freaking directions–NORTH so I very rarely have sufficient natural light for my bedroom to work. I need a better mirror, good lighting and better storage for my makeup, but that will definitely have to wait until I get my apartment. My bedroom right now just isn’t good for any type of setup.

nacacijin Avatar

Christine-Temptalia I actually quite like the handheld mirror when I’m in my bedroom. It’s amazing when I’m doing detail work on the lips or eyes (especially eyeliner!). But it’s difficult to maneuver having only one hand to work with while the other is holding the mirror. I definitely prefer a larger mirror on an everyday basis.

Sadly I have no choice but to use a desk lamp and the lighting in my bedroom. I have very small windows. What would you change about your makeup set-up? The lighting! I wish there was brighter and more natural lighting in my room that makes it hard to see sometimes.

xamyx Avatar

If I plan to be indoors all day, with artificial light, then I’ll just do my makeup in the bathroom mirror. There are no windows, and the light is fairly bright, but even. If it’s an outdoor activity, I typically use a tinted moisturizer with a high SPF, sometimes over another sunscreen, followed by mineralized powder, with SPF (I’m quite light, from the Irish side, yet I tan instantly, from the Greek side), so I don’t really have a need for special lighting. The same really goes for evening, as well, but I’ll sometimes do it in my bedroom, where the light isn’t as strong. I’m moving this weekend, so I’m sure this will all change; for one, I’ll have less counter space in the bathroom. I may just invest in a vanity, or large desk and mirror. The biggest problem I have (and it’s always been the issue), is I never have enough storage space…

wwendalynne Avatar

xamyx is there ever enough storage space?  I bought one of those plastic thingees with multiple pull out trays to fit in my walk in closet so I could free up some space in my bathroom.  The problem with this..I’m too bloody lazy to walk from my bathroom to my walk-in and once I move something there, it never gets used.  So I nixed that idea and purged a pile of cosmetics.  Now I’ve got so little room in my bathroom space because I have bins ..  ugh!

What would you change about your makeup set-up? Currently all my make-up is set up in the spare bedroom (aka extra big fat closet). I am working on a vanity for that room but at the moment it is just not coming to fruition. My biggest bugger is sink placement and what kind of sink to put in there.

Then, later, I double-check how it looks in a mirror that’s in more natural lighting. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? 6 overhead round vanity lights. What would you change about your makeup set-up? I need more storage space but I’ve already sacrificed the neatness of my tidy, sparse, white counters to those storage drawers for my more frequently-used makeup and have no more room. I think I need one of those tall, free-standing IKEA makeup cabinets/towers.

Kafka Avatar

wwendalynne  It’s a godsend to me to check my eyeshadows, how blended the colours are, how evenly the concealer or foundation is applied, stray mascara flecks and things like that. My bathroom has a massive mirrow over the sink, so that’s great for the overall stuff but I need that magnifying mirror to put on my eyeshadows first and foremost! How something looks in the overall mirror or from far away is often not the case close-up! But, yes, it definitely is a lifesaver for eyebrow shaping and tweezing, though. No doubt!

Preferably sunlight, but if it’s dark out with a regular bulb light (I think? xD) light, considering most places I go have the same lighting (the regular plain light bulb variety) it pretty much works out best. :PWhat would you change about your makeup set-up? I wish I had a legitimate vanity to store my makeup and do my makeup at that faces a good light source (i.e. windows) instead of splaying everything out on my bed. Alas, one day..

Skin tone and coloring: I’m very pale and have a strange undertone. It makes finding foundation incredible hard. For example the closest thing I’ve tried is revlon color stay liquid in the lightest cool shade and it’s still not quite right. Where do you apply your makeup: I have this lovely built in desk/counter/shelving unit in my room. But I think I’m changing that soon the lighting just isn’t very good. What kind of lighting do you use: I have a florescent light above the desk portion of the counter. Not the best way to apply makeup so I always double check in sunlight. What would you change about your makeup set-up: I’d change the lighting. I’d love to set up in front of the windows and get a more even light.

do I apply you makeup?:Usually in my bedroom, at my vanity, where the makeup is stored, sometimes in the bathroom, because the natural light is better. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with?: Natural if possible. If it’s evening, I’ll use whatever light is available, which is usually an overhead. What would you change about your makeup set-up? Almost everything. It seems that the natural light always favours one side or the other. Overhead lights cast strange shadows. In my bedroom, standing over my dresser or 3 feet away where i have a full length mirror, it makes applying eyeliner so easy as i can be v close to the mirror. What kind of lighting- during daytime i open the curtains and let in the natural light, i have 4 French windows so alot of light comes in.nighttime i do my makeup,in the yellow lights v have in the room. The thing i would love to change is how i store my makeup Coz currently its all jammed in a 8*8 drawer, we are moving v soon and my new bedroom will have the dresser right next to the window and a full length mirror by its side too. the dresser is not the conventional dresser, my designer created this unique set up just for me. Next to the mirror there will be shelves and a top to keep my huge acrylic makeup organizer i bought, a perfume tray for my perfumes, and drawers below there top and drawers next to the top starting from the ground, about 7 drawers, so il store my accessories in it plus a little space for my hubby.

During the week I apply my makeup at the gym after my morning workout.  Weekends of evenings its at home in the bathroom.
Lighting at the gym is awesome and bright.  I find its a good place to try new shades and color combos.  Lighting at home is crap.  Might as well do it by candlelight 🙁
I wouldn’t change a thing at the gym.  There are lots of mirrors for everyone to use, it’s perfect!!  At home, bathroom desperately needs a reno.  Old house, old wiring, 50-year-old light fixture painted onto the wall, its just tragic!!

Where do you  apply the makeup/what lighting do you use?  Hah, this is a little embarassing to admit, but I spend so much time on the go during heavy work weeks that I wind up applying my makeup on the bus often.  Obviously, that’s done under natural lighting.  😛
When I actually have time to do it at home, it’s done in my bathroom with all of the lighting activated (a very bright, ambient set above the sink, and a more natural one in the area near the door).
What would you change about your setup?  I’d love to change the lights near the sink.  They tend to cast a yellowed tint over the area, so when I put on makeup, I generally have to stop every few steps and flick them off to make sure it’s all flowing together in natural lighting.

Apply makeup? Lighting? In front of my RIALTO makeup Mirror that sits on my bathroom counter, Its a big bathroom so I pulled a chair in there too. The makeup mirror lighting is PERFECTION. I could apply my makeup with only the light from this mirror and it looks perfect and accurate. I spent ALLOT of time searching for a mirror like that. The typical lighted mirrors like conair and others are terrible. Its worth the extra money for perfect lighting.

What would I change? More and better storage. I have a tall lingerie dresser and a Lori Grenier mirror cabinet in my bathroom but the setup is far from ideal, I just bought some Muji drawers that Im waiting for. Ugh I just want all my makeup in one place that is visible and organized! Im getting some great ideas from youtube and the comments here.
