Maybelline Very Cherry Color Sensational Lipcolor

Maybelline Very Cherry Color Sensational Lipcolor ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is is a brightened blue-based red with a subtle sheen. When I saw Maybelline use this during Fashion Week in February, it looked like it might be a dupe for Chanel Dragon. It’s not a dupe, though they’re both blue-based reds with deeper ruby tones, so there are definitely similarities worth noting. MAC Runaway Red is a touch brighter and less blue-based. MAC Ruby Woo is cooler toned. Guerlain Garconne is more of a neutral red in comparison.

The Color Sensational range is supposed to deliver rich color with a creamy consistency. While their frostier finishes have a tendency to cling, the subtler finish of Very Cherry allows the formula to shine–it’s much creamier, so it applies evenly, easily, and doesn’t cling. It’s creamy but overly so, which means it doesn’t feel thick or heavy on the lips, and it won’t slip around while you wear it–this leads to excellent wear of six hours that can be stretched to eight hours as the red does stain the lips slightly. The scent of this range is rather synthetic and syrup-y sweet, which is the quality I like least about the formula, but the scent seems to disappear after six months of opening (without having to do anything).

I do love this natural lighting from the side. It lets us see so much more about the true color of the lipstick. Love the earings too!

This is so pretty! But I thought you mentioned once that Dragon is a true red? If not, what are some of your favorite true reds? I’ve only ever worn blue-based reds, and I’m looking to branch out!

Gorgeous shade! I’m not sure if they sell it in Europe though because we seem to have a very limited range of the color sensational lipsticks. I really love the full face picture! Is the lightning different because you moved house? Just wondering 🙂

Is this pic in your new place? What amazing lighting! This looks like a great red that can be used during the day. I’m going to be on the lookout for some deals at the local pharmacies.

I was not expecting that to look so amazing! Wow! That was a surprise. It looks stunning on you. Think I’ll definitely have to pick this up.

I urge you to read the actual reports and the studies done! Articles like that really take everything out of context and use scary headlines just to do that – scare you.

Here’s a great post because of the recent outcry about lead in lipsticks (which is not a new story): http://colinsbeautypages.co.uk/how-to-kill-yourself-with-lipstick/

I really like the lighting you used! It looks like a nice ‘daytime’ light, which is helpful for me, as I have to do my makeup in either overcast lighting or fluorescent light. The lipstick is great on you.

GORG Christine!! 🙂
Im so glad you gave this an A. I’ve been eyeing this red for a while, since one of my fav lippies is “born with it” from same line. I love the texture & wear so this is def #1 on my list now! Thanks as always!!

It’s so beautiful! I couldn’t resist, especially at that price. I bought it and it looks really good. Thanks for recommending it!

I like the Color Sensational lipsticks (I love Ruby Star and Red Revival), but they dry out/ go bad fast. They are one of the few lipsticks I’ve tried that tend to get an odd smell after a little over half a year or so. I know that it isn’t an issue with buying ones that have been sitting on the shelf too long, because I’ve been buying them since they were first released, and have had this problem consistently. I don’t mind that much since they’re cheap, but it sucks when they release LE ones and you find a color you just love and it goes bad with no chance of replacing it. 🙁

i thought i was the only 1 who felt so. only lipstick i’ve thrown away was by maybelline. really awful smell. i hate wasting stuff. but the smell got unbearable.

Julia Avatar

I love that red on you! But I absolutely loathe the Color Sensational lipsticks and it’s purely based on the formula; everyone that I’ve swatched or bought has such a suffocating wax-y feeling that I just can’t bear.

Corissa Avatar

there are really are some gems in this range of lipsticks. i have coral crush and fuchsia fever. definitely some of the most pigmented and longest lasting lipsticks i own, and they do not dry your lips out either. i will definitely be picking this up in the near future.

Once again, I CANNOT get over how fantastic your skin looks. Not that you don’t always have lovely skin, but with the MUFE Lift foundation, it’s really striking. So pretty!

The differences in lighting makes it really difficult to compare it to your swatch of Chanel Dragon, IMO. It still looks like a solid lipstick though, I may want to check it out.

I love the new fuller-full face shots! They really put the colour in a real sort of context – if that makes sense – because we can see the effect on your full face in real looking lighting. You look lovely!

I also love the look breakdown underneath the post!

This seems to be a lipstick that gives a lot for the money! If you would swatch/wear this and say it was from Guerlain, I’m convinced a lot of people would buy it even though it was a zillion times as much!

The Maybelline Colour Sensational lipstick line is probably one of the only ones in Hong Kong drugstores that contains a decent range of colours- for that reason I gravitated towards No. 635, “Very Cherry” December of last year. Then I read the FDA article- please refer to No.169 on the extended list. I know it takes a huge amount of lead to really cause any health concerns, but if I can help it, I’d like to minimize any possibility of danger where possible. A pity too, considering how I love my blue-based reds.

It’s always good to minimize, and it’s totally your choice to make, but this article does help to add some perspective – it may help you with your decision (either way) 🙂 I never would suggest you use something you don’t feel good about using!

i love the Color Sensational line! Can you do please please please do more drugstore reviews, esp. lipsticks? It’s nice to see the luxury brand posts, but I can use their testers at the mall. Most drugstore make-up is sealed, so I don’t get to see the true color until I buy it, which sucks! I know a lot of ppl feel my pain, lol.

brittany Avatar

just a thought… you should maybe add a “toxicity” category to your reviews, as many people are becoming more concious of what is in their cosmetics. i read an article somewhere that maybelline is still putting quite a bit of lead into their lipsticks.
