MAC Metal-x Cream Eyeshadow Photos & Swatches

Review coming soon, please hold all questions until then! 🙂 I spent all of yesterday and last night photographing, swatching, and testing, but I wasn’t able to get everything done before it was bedtime (midnight!). So for now, please take a gander at these eyeshadows but know two things 1) these have not been reformulated, so they have the same formula as the ones released in 2007 had; 2) they are NOT long-wearing and MAC doesn’t give any guidance on wear (read between the lines: it will crease).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! I saw and swatched these at pro and um no… not for my oily lids! I can’t remember, was there a purple? usually MAC shadow collections have a purple somewhere in there.

Carbon, Tarnish, and Vintage Coin are pretty damn awesome. But creasing is an absolute deal breaker for me. I shouldn’t have to wrangle my shadows in to place and babysit them all day. Chanel got the long-wearing cream formula down, why can’t MAC? (Not to mention that gel liners are long wearing, it can’t be that hard to fiddle with the formula to create a cream shadow similar to a gel liner)

Are you sure about the reformulation? These have been out for a while in Europe and everything I’ve read on European blogs says that they are reformulated. They certainly feel and apply differently to the old version.

I’m stunned by the big dis on this product! I had a bunch from the 2007 collection and had to call MAC to find out how to use them- but once I got the right info they were gorgeous! Gilded Ash was the single best eye shadow color ever created!
You have to use a 239 brush, stiff. You dig on in to the stuff- it isn’t a powder! swirl that brush around and load it up. The color should go on just fine- and no, this isn’t a “base” color. Globbing powder color on to it is just asking for trouble but it should be obvious this isn’t primer. let it dry!
Metal X tends to be one of those pro tools the public doesn’t understand. It’s a primo product for ignoring the so called “rules”. Raves, Burning Man, night clubs? Yes! Whatever Christine was doing isn’t in the products DNA. It isn’t intended for wearing to an office. Although Gilded Ash was my daily driver until the pot was empty… And I have never had a crease with this stuff So if she can’t understand how to use a different than average product then more for me!

Worth mentioning- clean the eye cream grease off and don’t use primer. This is an old Skool recipe from before we had to buy primer. And wear either one color like they were in Paris with this or two at the most. Just ignore that crease thing. It should go on thin and then let it dry.

Hi Lark,

I also tried a thin layer of product, applied with a brush, with fingertips, etc. I tried over 5 different techniques, but none of them worked for me. I’m glad it worked for you, but it doesn’t for me – I’m not totally stupid! 🙂

I used the Art Deco eyeshadow base(thin layer-good blending) and Gold Carbon. No creasing from day to night.I am very pleased for my discovery! Wishes and a happy new year from Greece!

I have a tendency of buying an entire collection in all shades because I’m simply addicted to colors which can cause a problem obviously. This is the second time I have visted your site and because of your reviews and photos of swatches, it helped me to decide which one that I should definitely go for. The first time was with the MAC Winter 2011 Collection. So, thank you Temptalia!
