Smashbox Tag Me Photo Edit Eye Shadow Trio Review, Photos, Swatches

Smashbox Tag Me Photo Edit Eye Shadow Trio ($22.00 for 0.11 oz.) is nice in theory but less impressive in action, which has been truer more often than not with the brand’s recently released trios. I’m not even keen on it over primer, as there’s a dryness present in the eyeshadow formula that just never looks as true-to-pan in color or finish on the lid (even with primer!) compared to the shades in the compact.

Bellini Bling
Bellini Bling is a bright, light yellow with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had opaque pigmentation with a soft, lightly powdery texture that kicked up excess product in the pan, even with a light hand. It was very blendable, and I was surprised it didn’t sheer out instantly; instead, it applied fairly evenly and well over bare skin but would be a formulation I’d use with a primer for best results. On me, it lasted for seven hours.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to be "super-blendable" and "richly-pigmented." I found the quality to vary a lot from shade to shade, even with a trio, as some shades had soft, blendable texture and others were drier, dusty, and messy to work with and had pigmentation that sheered out or faded quickly. I wanted to like them more than I ended up after using them on the lid as I routinely felt like the brighter shades never looked quite as vibrant in practice as they did in the pan. Most of the shades were blendable and had coverage from medium to opaque with a few being sheer. They lasted anywhere from five to eight hours on me.

Bikini Scene
Bikini Scene is a medium-dark coral with warm undertones and a sparkling, gold shimmer finish. The texture was more loosely pressed, which made the sparkles more noticeable in feel when I used the product. It had opaque pigmentation, but it did sheer out to semi-opaque coverage quite readily on the lid when used without a primer or applied with a dampened brush. It blended out nicely and lasted for seven hours but had some fallout over time.

Spiked Punch
Spiked Punch is a muted, medium-dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and flecks of sparkle over a mostly matte finish. It had good color coverage, which was buildable to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top. The powder was dusty, a little thin, and had some fallout during application and was more prone to fading (seven hours).

I like it, especially with what you were able to create for the eye look you did using it. However, I much prefer the similar shades I have in CP’s Pressed Powder Eyeshadow formula over these!
This was one of the two I was looking at (other being Holy Crop), and yep, I had same experience with in-store swatching in terms of it being dry-feeling, not quite impressive.
It’s been on my “well, maybe, someday, if I’m in the mood” list since. I love the concept — a small, specific palette. Am on the fence still.
If the quality was that bit better, I think this would be a hit as all the shade colours are well co-ordinated.
Lovely eye look Christine.
I had a few of their older eyeshadow trios way back that is now discontinued. I would say this was about 8 years ago? And I didn’t like it. The shimmer formula felt gritty and the matte shades felt really dry and went on patchy. I’ve also tried their BB cream and the light shade was so orange and made me so greasy. I never got why Smashbox has gotten so expensive and hyped up. Their packaging always looked a bit cheap to me. It’s too bad these new shadows aren’t as good performing as I would have expected since the brand in general has been much talked about in the beauty community. I really want to try some of their products again but nothing really stands out to me.
Really was hoping for more positive reviews on these. I have discovered a newfound love of Smashbox since they announced they went cruelty-free but I think they need to remember they have competition from a LOT of new brands lately (even just using Colourpop as a reference like Nancy mentioned — love you girl!!) and, as politely as I can say this, step their game up a bit. Christine, you have me so spoiled now! I feel like a snob — if something doesn’t at least get an A-, I feel the automatic impulse to poo-poo it! It’s a blessing and a curse at the same time but I’d rather be informed than pay a premium for a brand name. (Even if the brand is one I love!)
Sad it didn’t do so great, but I’ll try these 3 as a combination next time using the eyeshadows I own.
I really like the eye look you did Christine!
Man, these aren’t turning out great.
