Make Up For Ever Artist Shadows

Much Ado About Plum

Beginning November 22nd (and ending November 27th), Make Up For Ever kicks off their Artist Shadow Black Friday deal where you can purchase 12 Artist Shadows for $75 (a $252 value). Last year, Anastasia had a 50% off sale on their single eyeshadows, and I put together some “quads” for inspiration, so here are some ideas for filling up 12 slots. If you have yours planned, I’d love to hear it 🙂 I avoided picking brow bone type shades as those can depend on the skin tone!

The first set of shades were selected to fit a plum theme–slightly cooler, warmer, and more earthy plums and taupes. If you want more mattes in yours, try switching out a few of the shimmery taupes for some of the browns listed in the Neutrals or Mattes below.

Basics 101: Neutrals

I tried to include a mix of warmer and more neutral-toned shades of brown and taupe with a solid mix of matte and shimmer.

Basics 101: Mattes

Here’s a good selection of higher performing matte eyeshadows in a mix of neutral tones–brown to taupe to berry to black. This would make for a good complementary palette against more shimmery palettes.

Earthly Neutrals

I’m a sucker for earth tones, and Make Up For Ever has a slew of smoky greens, bronzes, and plums to choose from, but if I had to narrow it down, here are some favorites!

Shades of Taupe

I love how versatile the color taupe is; it can be cooler or warmer, and it can often look cooler or warmer depending on what else is used with it. This set of shades highlights the variety in taupe and how finish and undertone can play a role in how they appear and function.

Smoke & Mirrors

I noticed that the brand had several smoky, blackened eyeshadows that were still brighter and pigmented enough that they weren’t just color-tinted blacks, and I thought they would make for a lovely set of hues together.

Last year, ABH sold out of most shades almost instantly; it was a bummer. Let’s see how this one goes.

Am still sorting. So far, my list is mostly basic neutrals, and some pinks/corals as I’ve been looking at pinks lately. So far, the list I’ll narrow down to 12 is starting with: cinnamon; rosewood or light rosewood; eggshell, linen, bisque or sand; milk toffee, canyon, cookie, milk tea, teak; pinky tile; peach, salmon, apricot; grenadine. Still going to look into a berry or two yet.

Thanks. Have been narrowing the list, but only had the ones you actually rated. Think some of the unrated are wanted. Old mufe queen, here I come. Take it two ways. Thanks.

I’m not the biggest fan of the artist shadows. Happier with MAC or ABH. But seriously all the Sephoras near me rarely restock majority of the MUFE Artist shadows so this deal would be fruitless and I rarely shop online

These are outstanding ideas, Christine! Unfortunately unless something changes on the MUFE website, a lot of these shades are out of stock. We may be scrounging for fillers to come up with 12 shadows. So sad….? Any chance they may restock in less than 5 days?

Thanks for this! I was searching these swatches yesterday and this is helpful. I do hope they restock some shades though. I gave up on my list when I noticed quite a few out of stocks on the site 🙁 they probably want to get rid of specific shades and magically everything will be available at full price after the sale lol

The entire range is being discontinued, so I expect they just stopped producing shades as they got closer to the final sell dates for the Artist Shadows.

My hope is that maybe Sephora will offer something to compete, but even if not, they’ll eventually clear ’em out, I’m sure.

Christine, iirc, last time I checked, you didn’t have swatches of all the colors. Can you please swatch any missing shades prior to the sale? I know this is a big ask because you’re already slammed with reviews and it would be a tight turnaround for you, but I’m sure it would be greatly appreciated!

Christine,

This is a super helpful and thoughtful post! Love your ideas and can’t believe how many of the MUFE shadows are in the swatch gallery. Thank you!

Last year I learned about the ABH Black Friday sale on their singles on Temptalia–I believe they were 60% off . I ended up ordering 12 shadows and most of them are shadows that I wear on a regular basis. I’ve actually hit pan (or have almost hit pan) on several of the shadows. Before I made my purchase I looked at the ABH palettes you put together, your reviews, comparison swatches and dupes. It really helped me to make an informed purchase that I was extremely happy about.

I guess I just wanted to say that I really appreciate all of the time that you spend putting together posts like these, as it really helps me to make thoughtful purchases–especially when shopping online when you can’t swatch the product yourself.

Thanks again for all you do, and hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!
