Kat Von D Super Sonic Everlasting Glimmer Veil Liquid Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches
Super Sonic
Kat Von D Super Sonic Everlasting Glimmer Veil Liquid Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.18 oz.) is a medium-dark, coppery brown with warm, red undertones and flecks of green and gold sparkle. It had semi-opaque coverage in a single layer on its own, and it was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. The texture was thin and felt watery going on, but it dried down to a transfer-resistant stain (but the product breaks down in water). The base definitely leaves a strong stain behind, even as the color wore away over a 10-hour period. The formula was a bit drying over time.
This was an “Everlasting Flash” shade, so it was released for 48-hours, and I’m not certain if or when it will be returning (the brand just says “limited edition” and that it was “only” going to be available during the flash sale).

Formula Overview
$22.00/0.18 oz. - $122.22 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to have “24-hour wear” with a “liquid stain base” that “feels like nothing” on the lips that can be worn “on its own” or layered “as a veil” over another lip color. There’s a lot to like about the formula, and I think as far as the concept of “lip toppers” go, it offers the versatility of actually being easy enough to apply to wear on its own but still be useful layered over other products for a shimmering effect. The doe-foot applicator worked well with the formula, as it spread the color and sparkly bits across the lips quite evenly. The coverage ranged from shade to shade with most having medium, buildable coverage in a single layer, which was in line with the description. They dried down and were transfer-resistant (until eating/drinking/licking of lips) but still had a great shimmering effect that made them look wet, even when they dried. They were more comfortable to wear than I anticipated–lightweight and just a little drying.
One of the bigger downsides is that it’s not going to wear 24 hours. Just about every single shade (all but Thunderstruck) stained my lips intensely, which helped prolong the wear, but the product breaks down with water, just plain water, and of course, it is removable by a slew of removers, including oil which one might encounter during a meal. I found deeper shades stained well but removed unevenly and left behind stained lines and patches on my lips that did not dissipate for almost 24-hours post wear. I didn’t notice that the lip color did not take well to water initially, as I didn’t see any transfer on my glasses, but when I rinsed after I brushed my teeth (where I cup water in my hands, so less elegant than drinking from a glass), I had lip color running like crazy.
This led me to pay even more attention the next time I wore the formula, and sure enough, color lifted with just a sip of water and transferred onto things like paper (but not glassware) and the back of my hand. Some shades made it through meals better than others with the worst offenders lifting more noticeably from the center of the lips. The formula survives some eating and drinking, but the more you drink, the less it survives, and even careful eating/drinking yielded noticeably faded wear between eight and twelve hours of wear. I don’t think a brand would advocate 24-hour wear but expect you not to eat, drink, or even brush your teeth! I would consider it long-wearing in the grand scheme of things with solid six to ten hour wear depending on the shade. They do stain significantly less when layered over something like the brand’s Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks but can seep through more emollient lipstick formulas.

Wow, mine has way more green to it. Weird!
I grabbed this on a whim and really love it, actually. As stand alone lip products the glimmer veils are “meh”, buuuut as toppers to other lipsticks they are banging. I’ve layered this over two different lipsticks so far and effin loved it. They were regular lipsticks, not long-wearing at all, and this on top locked both in to place. Layering also makes the green shimmer pop. So, overall, I don’t like the price for several reasons (thin, overly drying, etc..), but I’m not unhappy with my purchase as a special treat.
Thank you for the review!
Yeah, some of them work well as standalone shades, but most are better as toppers! Which lipstick colors did you layer it over?
I layered over the Desy ×Katy liquid lipstick hotfire. It looks amazing! I can imagine sonic looking awesome on darker fall colors.
A really good friend gifted this one to me, and even though I didn’t get a chance to wear it for the whole day, I absolutely love it! Which completely surprised me given the green-gold shimmer! Made me instantly imagine the beautiful warmth of autumn leaves dappled by sunlight as I remember them from decades spent living in the Northeast.
Kat mentioned the possibility of bringing this back permanently, I think on her Instagram?
I’ll check for it!
I bought this, and it’s so beautiful. I love it! I’m was glad when she announced she was making it permanent, despite my suspicion that it was planned all along.
Love, love, love this shade!
I love this! I used it on top of Maybelline Smokin’ Red lipstick and then it topped it again with the Maybelline. Gave a glimmer effect! Then I also put it on my eyes, on top of red eyeshadow. So beautiful!
I was thinking of using it on my eyes, too!
I’m not one for ultra glittery lips but this spoke to me, green shift, deep reddish rusty base, I had to buy it and i figured at the worst I’ll use it as a topper on the eyes or as liner. Its SO BEAUTIFUL. Mine shows way more green than the swatches, maybe its one of those you have to swatch it to really see it??
I’m now eyeing the other glimmer veils because of how much I love this one *heart eyes*
