How do you make your lip color last?
How do you make your lip color last? Even if it isn’t a “long-wearing” product?
I prefer using a neutral colored lip liner (which matches my natural lip color) or match it to the lipstick in particular, then I layer on the lipstick with a lip brush. I lightly dust on loose, translucent powder, and then apply another layer of lipstick.

It lasts long enough for me with either MAC P&P lips or just on it’s own…my problem is getting it to apply smoothly 😐
I use Paula Dorf’s Perfect Illusion. I’ve been using it for years and my lipsticks don’t budge! I also use lipliner, but I don’t think that does much for making the lipstick last, it just gives definition. For the life of me I can’t get MAC lipglass to stop bleeding on me every time I use it, and I’ve tried *everythng*.
By how much would you say that that extends the wear of your lip color?
Double whatever the normal time it wears alone.
I really only have two types of colors in my drawer, rose lipsticks and red lipsticks. With the rose ones I just use a rose lipliner. With the red, I put down concealer on the lips first then the lipstick.
i’ll wear a lipstain and then a lipstick and gloss over it, lasts for hours
Do you do this when you swatch lip colors?
Swatches are quick, so I’m doing anywhere from 5-10 at a time and the usage of lip liner could alter the way a product looks so then the swatch would be totally worthless! 🙁 I don’t wear anything with a lipstick or gloss when I’m testing it for wear, since that would defeat the purpose of doing a wear test 🙂
Probably a dumb question but how exactly do you apply the powder? With a brush or…? Seems like a brush would get really, really messy!
You can tap it on lightly, or you can hold a tissue up and tap it through a tissue – if the powder is fine enough, it can sometimes work that way.
I actually don’t do anything. I’ve tried a bunch of techniques in the past and then decided I don’t care anymore, so I just put it on and go. I’ll reapply if I have the lipstick with me.
I have to remember to resist biting and licking them is all… Touching my face absentmindedly is the number one danger to my makeup’s longevity (number two is my abnormally teary eyes).
I’m with Tigress, I don’t particularly care if my lip color wears off. It actually is a pick me up experience for me to reapply as needed or when I care/need a mental boost.
So, to answer the question, I don’t try to extend my lip color’s wear.
I use lipliner All over then lipstick! Lasts all day even with eating. I just need to blot gently after eating to make sure food is not left on my lips!
Since I started using Lipstick I’ve always applied a product valled “Lipfix” ovr ist. That’s a transparant liquid you apply with a brush and let it dry, then the lipstick is sealed and lasts forever!
I do the translucent powder trick too, works like a charm! Although I also use MAC P&P as a base with liner too. I pack it all on, hopefully they don’t cancel each other out – seems to work fine for me though!
I use benefit She-lac. its wonderful
Christine, what type of brush do you use for dusting translucent on your lips? Regular powder brush or something smaller? TA

I trained myself not to lick my lips at all. That has done more for lasting lip color than anything ever. I have become so good at it that I don’t even lick them in my sleep and I wake up with my night lip balm still in place.
I also have used Paula Dorff like Tammie quoted with good luck – done the lipliner all over the lip first, as well as the dusting lips with powder and setting lips/entire face with some of the newer sprays that lock your face down for ‘overnight.’ I tend to use the latter things when doing brides/bridal party makeup. Was not hard to train myself not to lick my lips at all. Had to use a lip product I was 100% always aware was on my lips – like some of those 2 part cheaper color last somethings – by Cover Girl or whoever. After about 3 weeks I never have had to much trouble eating off my lip product. Of course the darker the shade, the longer it lasts typically. That’s a no brainer.
After I apply my lip color, I place a tissue over my lips and dust over it with powder, then i reapply my lip color 🙂
I put on lip balm, then a bit of foundation on my lips, then fill in with a lip pencil, then the lipstick, then blot, then re-apply. All my friends ask me how I get my lipstick to stay and that’s what I tell them.
