Guerlain Shalimar (166) Rouge Automatique Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

Guerlain Shalimar (166) Rouge Automatique Lipstick
Guerlain Shalimar (166) Rouge Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a bright pop of strawberry pink with subtle pink and gold micro-shimmer. It’s slightly cool-toned with a subtle blue-base, but on me, it reads almost warm, which works out better for my skin tone. Shalimar is mostly opaque on lips with a rather slick finish that looks almost wet. This is easily one of the best–in terms of quality–Rouge Automatiques I’ve tried so far. It glides on like balm-meets-butter, but it doesn’t bleed or slide away. It wears so well (five to six hours) and hangs on through drinks and lunch.
The formula is creamy without being thick or heavy, and it is actually a moisturizing formula. It’s soft and feels like silk when applied. I find these comparable to the Rouge G lipstick, though not as thick or as opaque, but still similar enough. They’re $11 cheaper than the Rouge Gs, but the colors still have the same depth and nuanced shade range that makes Guerlain lipstick always standout to me. To see more photos of the packaging, check out this post.
At first glance, it seems like this should be a relatively easy shade to dupe, but there is something about the luminosity and clarity of the color that makes it more difficult. I also think that the subtle blue-base, as opposed to a very blue-base, adds to that difficulty. Shades like MAC Gulabi (or Girl About Town) are brighter pinks with a bluer base. I thought MAC Full Fuchsia seemed more similar, because of the fuchsia sheen, but ultimately it is brighter and redder. MAC Pink Burst comes even closer in color–just more of a frosted finish. I am reminded of NARS Carthage, but when you compare them side-by-side, you can see that it’s clearly brighter, bluer, and doesn’t have the gold shimmer.

Lovely shade….I love such shades that instantly brighten up the whole look..You looking gorgeous Christine!! 🙂
At first I thought these lipsticks were a little gimmicky (since Guerlain first had a sliding-open lipstick in the 1920s or so), but the formula looks just pigmented enough to be wearable, and bright enough to be very fun. You look absolutely beautiful in the last picture, especially about the eyes!
Omg, the subtle golden sheen in the set of lip swatches is so gorgeous.
I wish Guerlain lipsticks weren’t so heavily fragranced. I adore this vintage packaging and the colour is wonderful. If only I could stomach the scent of violets 🙁
You could try de-scenting, which just means leaving it exposed for a day or two. You could also put it next to a bowl of vinegar or lemon juice! 🙂
I never knew you could “de-scent”, what a neat trick. I don’t mind most fragrances myself, but if I purchase one with a yucky fragrance I’ll give this a try!
Hey Christine, totally gorgeous lipstick!
I know this comment isn’t related to this post, so sorry about that – I wanted to leave it on a recent post instead of an old one.
I think it’s great that you’re swatching everything individually so that colors can be compared in your swatch gallery, but in the cases of palettes, I am really missing getting to see all the colors together, at one time. Not seeing this makes it harder to get an idea of how the colors will combine together, – there’s nothing like seeing an picture of the colors in a quad (for example, the Chanel quad you swatched not too long ago) all lined up together.
I don’t know if I’m the only one who has this preference or not, but I thought I’d tell you my thoughts. I don’t know how much more work it would be to swatch the shades both separately and together in the case of palettes, but in a perfect world, in my opinion at least, that would be ideal.
I would have to take double the photos (so it would be double the work) that I normally take to do so as I can only swatch 1 or 2 shadows per arm to get them individually – but you can always see them combined – like if you open up the Swatch Gallery for Chanel, you would see the four shades from the palette lined up next to each other (because the gallery displays images with most recent first), for the time being. I will consider it, but ultimately, it just depends on time. The more each product requires, the less product I review and/or less likely I will get up quickly, so I have to balance everything the best I can without disappointing readers like you.
this is on my wishlist! I love how its lighter and less opaque than girl about town. I also love the formula – I already have nahema and rose bengale.
Lovely color!! Looks amazing on you Christine!!! I just wished the price of these lipsticks was different….
I wish Sephora had this shade! I have a gift card!
This is one of my favorite lipsticks. So glad you enjoyed it as much as I do!
What eyeshadow are you wearing in the last picture (with the Cle de Peau lipgloss)?
Wow, a PERFECT Lipstick! have to try
i am not a lipstick girl, but this is sooo pretty
The shade is sooo gorgeous on you Christine!
Actually, I’m glad to see a swatch of the shade separately, because I didn’t think it went with that lipgloss from your look the other day. Such a pretty color, but not one I think I’d ever wear myself.
Hey christine! U look gorgeous in this look. Can u please suggest a drugstore brand red lipstick for NC 35-40 skintone plz. Thanx much
I do not know of a drugstore dupe, sorry – the only dupes I know of are the ones I listed in this post. Sorry!
NYC AND WET N WILD HAVE SOME GREAT REDS FOR YOUR SKINTONE
hi christine!! huggy fourth of july!!! i wonder if the new salsa lip gloss from their terracotta inca collection would look good? i can’t wait until you review the fall colors!! xo to you!!!
pink is your color christine!!! they always look lovely on you
I love the Guerlain Rouge Automatiques (the annoying packaging aside), and this shade looks great on you.
This looks so pretty and quite unique… I want it, but I’m sure Guerlain is a lot more expensive in Sweden! And I can’t even find these Rouge Automatiques on Kicks’ website…
I love love love this new formula. Have four shades and am enjoying them a lot. I am a lipstick person and this is the best formula I ever came across. Chapeau Guerlain.
Will check out Shalimar as well! Thanks
Does this line have any neutral colors? 🙂 Thanks Chirstine. Love your blog 🙂 You look amazing.
I’m sure they do – they have several shades, but I haven’t seen them all, sorry!
the lipstick looks really nice 🙂
Amazing colour! I am speechless!
holy cow, that’s one jaw-droppingly beautiful lipstick! unfortunately, its exorbitant price is kinda.. repulsive.
Christine, you have warm skin tone yet you pull off any cool tone lipstick so well!!
Thanks, Grace – most people tell me I look awful in it, lol!
rude people
i picked this up right after your review for champs elysses! i was supposed to get CE… but this caught my eye instead and i could practically weep with joy, this is absolutely the most perfect lipstick i have- colour and formula-wise.
That color looks so amazingly beautiful!
I have 4 of them and love them completely. The texture is to die for and makes any shade look stunning. I bought 164, 165, 120 and 143… Plan to purchase shade number 100 and now 166 as well..
hehe seems like the perfect lipstick 😛 and looks cute on you 😀 like most lippies hehe tho i think such shades look clownish on my pale skin. i’m scared of dark lippies :))
Christine,
I just wanted to share my frustration! Nordstrom.com is now saying this color is “No longer available.” I asked their chat support if they were getting it back in stock, and they told me “I am so sorry, I don’t have any stores that still have it in stock and I don’t see any orders for it in our system.” Then I asked if it was limited edition (which I knew it wasn’t because of you!) and they said “It wasn’t originally, but one of my coworkers said she heard they were possibly cutting the colors in the line.”
So disappointing! Why would they discontinue a popular color that is so great??
Of all colors, I’d be surprised that Shalimar, since it’s such a signature product!
I know this was a while ago, but is there a look breakdown (eyes and blush!) for the first/second picture? I love what you’ve done!
