Wet ‘n’ Wild Blue had Me at Hello Eyeshadow Palette

Wet ‘n’ Wild Blue had Me at Hello Eyeshadow Palette ($4.99 for 0.30 oz.) includes eight different eyeshadows, and in all honetsy, they almost seem more like two four-pan palettes stuck together. All eight shades coordinate and complement each other, but the quality of the second column is significantly superior compared to the first column. The one thing I have noticed with Wet ‘n’ Wild’s Color Icon eyeshadows is that their frosts are done well, but the more matte the shade is, the lesser the quality is, both in pigmentation and in wear.

The first column includes a semi-sheer, silvered white with a frosted finish, medium silvered gray with a frost finish; semi-matte dark black with blue sparkle, and matte black. The black with blue sparkle shade is a little sheer in the black color base, and the blue sparkles either disappear by the time one applies or leave a little fall out beneath the eye–the effect of the blue sparkle just doesn’t come through very much (the best thing to do would be to layer over a sticky base and reall pack it on, and then you might get a better result). The matte black shade is a bit chalky and stiff, making it rather unpigmented when swatched. I hoped that it would perform better in practice, but it didn’t get nearly as intense applied as it looks in the pan–but more frustrating was that it seemed to fade after a few hours.

The second column consists of a pale, icy blue with a frosted finish, aqua-teal with a golden sheen and frosted finish, rich midnight navy blue with a softened frost finish, and semi-matte black with soft silver sparkle. With these four, I only had issues with the matte black with silver sparkle shade, which took some layering to get the intensity level to match the color in the pan. Like the black with blue sparkle in the first column, the silver sparkle doesn’t translate much when used, so it ends up being more of a semi-matte/matte black. It is more pigmented than the matte black shade in the first column, though. Unfortunately, it, too, suffers from some fading after three to four hours of wear. The other three shades are fantastic, with really soft, smooth texture and rich color pay off. The aqua-teal is absolutely gorgeous–very much to the tune of MAC Parrot but lighter and brighter.

It is disappointing that four of eight shades have some problems, with two having issues with fading. If you do normally buy higher-end, I do think the quality of the second column makes the palette well worth the price tag, but if your budget is tight, you may find yourself at odds with the palette overall. If these were split in two, I would have given quality scores of 21/30 and 28/30 respectively. As I do with palettes, I individually assessed each shade, added them up, then divided by eight to get an average quality score, which was around 26/30.

my thoughts on the formula: Color Icon Eyeshadows are definitely some of the best eyeshadows you’ll find in the drugstore, and this palette shows both the best and worsts of the formula overall. The frostier shades seem to work the best and have no problem wearing all day (over a base, of course), while the more matte shades tend to lack in pigmentation and fade after a few hours (they don’t disappear, but they do fade noticeably).

I’m actually surprised I like this palette. I might go try to find it and I don’t even remember the last time I purchased W&W.

It was $8.99 at your Walgreens? Wow! I picked up Comfort Zone and Petal Pusher (the other two 8-pans in the collection) for $4.99 each, and Blue Had Me at Hello was in the same display area, also marked $4.99. This is the price I’ve seen listed in pre-release info on the 8-pans and most reviews since then.

(I’m not doubting you got the info right, I just feel bad that you had to pay more if you did 🙁 especially with that left side lacking in quality.)

If you haven’t made plans to get or review it already, I think Comfort Zone might serve you better 🙂

I’ve been waffling on this, soley because I want dark blue crease color on the right side. 😀 I’ve never had much luck with any black shadows not looking a bit patchy on me, I don’t know if it’s technique or me just being that pale on my lids. On top of that, I don’t think most of the W&W blacks are particularly good for black shadows, so essentially having three of them in this palette is bringing things down.

As someone who really doesn’t like mattes, I have been using the heck out of the matte side of the Lust 6-pan palette, though. I think the pigmentation and coverage on those are rather good, but the lightest color probably looks better on lighter skintones because it’s just barely a pink step down from matte white.

A lot of blacks suffer from the same issue, but what I have noticed is that they’ll often swatch so-so or poor and really amp up when you actually use it on the lid (must be the difference between using a brush over fingers/sponge tip applicator, IMO – I think the bristles either collect more product or deposit better). I just wish these didn’t fade – and I agree, since the sparkles don’t really come through, you do end up with three very similar blacks!

Some brands really excel with mattes, others don’t always get it right. MUFE and Bobbi Brown are really great for mattes — Sugarpill, too – they make the best black I’ve come across; rich in pigment no matter how you use it. MAC can do a great matte but they can also flop on them, too.

Hi Christine

Love when you show different looks so I was wondering whether you could show one or many (lol) using the different Wet n Wild palettes?

Thanks

Rae Avatar

Ahh, why do you keep creating these WnW lemmings for us, Christine?! 😛 Even though the quality of the first column sounds a little suspect, the intensity of the second has me hooked on these images…!

ericka Avatar

Christine, forgive me if this has been asked/answered already, but how would you compare the blue in the second column to MAC’s Deep Truth? Would you say it’s lighter?

Michilicious ~ Avatar

Omg! I was surprised by how pretty and pigmented the second column looks! 😀
The quality of the first column really should be improved though. By making such a great second column, Wet n’ Wild shows that they can make much better shadows, yet they leave the first column disapointing! ~

This reminds me of that Lancome (? or was it Guerlain?) palette that was released recently. I can’t wait to find it in stores. Thanks for the review! As always, your pictures are the best. 🙂

Marie Avatar

The pigmentation and everything look fine….but I still can’t bring myself to buy drugstore makeup. I don’t know why, maybe I’m just a snob, but I don’t want that stuff on my face!

Mariella Avatar

I can’t wait til these 8 pans are available in Canada. I’ll probably pass on this one since blues aren’t really my “thing” and I’ve got all the blue shadows I need or want. But it’s Comfort Zone that I really want! Can’t wait for your review of that one!

Bethy Avatar

I’d be willing to spend $5 on this palette simply for two colors. I mean, it’s a better option than spending $14.50+ on a single color pot. I’d just like to find some way to get rid of the lesser colors and re-pan the good colors in a smaller palette. Or combine multiple palettes that way into a single palette.

Kiya Avatar

That’s what I’ve been wanting to do with my WnW shadows, too- get the ones I actually use often in one place. Z Palette or UNII Palette, if you don’t mind their prices, have been looking good, but you also have to depot, which looks like a different method for WnW than for, say, MAC shadows. If you do some searches on youtube you can find some depotting method tutorials specifically made for WnW palettes like the 6-pans, I assume they’ll work for this the same.

nikki Avatar

i don’t know where to ask this but, would you say that matte shadows are the most appropraite for a photoshoot or or satin and shimmers okay too?

rozeta Avatar

i love the pigmentation and texture of these shadows!! my only problem with them is that they can fade really quick if your base isn’t good enough. the crease color in my first column also broke the first day 🙁 it was repairable but it disappointed me.

RonyaLii Avatar

oh my . i wish these palettes were avaible at my country .

i wish there would be more palettes at ebay .
i wish ebay sellers wouldnt be so greedy .

ak Avatar

I doubt Wet n Wild will ever come to the UK, which is fine with me but yeah I remember after living in the States for so long. This palette is an improvement although I never like their lipsticks.

This palette would be worth it if that navy looking shadow in the first column showed up exactly like MAC Contrast or something becasue the second column is good.

At least five of those shadows look wearable; the other three near white ones would give me too much of an early 70s ABBA vibe, or something, back when the brows were overplucked into a thin round arch.

Marion Avatar

I know that I wouldn’t hesitate if I could get it for $5. I’m not sure it’s worth $17 though (from Ebay with shipping to Europe).

Michelle Avatar

I just bought this as well as their neutral palette. I found the first column to be alright, but the color I had the biggest issue with was that silver-flecked black. I could barely get any color with my finger and had to dig in with the sponge-applicator to get a little for swatching. Even then not much. But worth the price for the silver and blues for sure!!

Emm Avatar

Thank you for this! I wanted to buy it but I already own a Maybelline Studioline palette and a Loreal hip duo with similar colors.
I really like your observations on the texture and wear for the colors. The pictures are good/clear too.

Carrie Avatar

Just wanted to say thanks again for all the work you do- I saw these in the store and vaguely remembered that some didn’t work. A quick look up on my phone gave me my answer and I felt confident in my purchase ( I wanted the lighter/brighter shades) I know that if I buy something that has your approval it won’t be a waste 🙂

Eva Avatar

I just picked this up for a dollar! Definitely a dollar well-spent; Wet-n-Wild has really been hitting the mark lately. I don’t mind the iffy first column because those blues on the right are so nice! Wish the right-hand black would retain as much sparkle on the eyes as it does in the pan.
