Prismatic Amethyst

Becca Prismatic Amethyst Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed ($38.00 for 0.25 oz.) is described as a “lavender duo-chrome.” It’s a pale pink with cooler undertones and fine gold, pink, and violet pearl. As far as the shift went, I tried to detect it but found it very subtle–at most I saw a very subtle gold to lilac shift. The finish was a soft, luminous sheen and far less shiny and metallic on the skin, even applied heavily, than the majority of the shades in the same formula. On my skin tone, it was barely perceptible on its own, though it was more apparent if I layered it over other blushes (particularly pinks, berries, and plums).

It had semi-opaque, buildable coverage that was easy to sheer out (lighter hand, more feather brush) for less coverage, if desired. The texture was fairly soft and smooth, easily blended on the skin, and sat well on my skin without emphasizing my skin’s natural texture or the look my pores. The highlighter wore well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably.

Formula Overview

$38.00/0.25 oz. - $152.00 Per Ounce

The Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed formula is described as having an "ultra-reflective shine" with a "creamy" texture that "applies seamlessly." In general, the texture of the highlighters is incredibly smooth, silky, and finely-milled with frosted to metallic finishes and the occasional more sparkly finish.

They tend to have a high-shine, more metallic finish and are a stronger highlighter, so they are going to be best suited to someone who likes an obvious highlight over a very subtle one. That being said, with a fan brush and a deft hand, one could certainly achieve a subtler, all-over luminosity as well, but if one takes a typical, tapered highlighting brush, there will be quite a bit of pigment and highlight on the skin.

I find that some shades can emphasize the look of pores slightly to moderately, depending on application. They tend to last between eight to nine hours on me.

I’m not talking about just this cool-toned pink, I remember you reviewed some mint green highlighter from Lorac, and then Jeffree Star has those mint and black highlighters (yes black). Just seems like the trend this year is some unusual highlight colours.

Christine Avatar

You made your comment on this post, so I presumed you were referring to this shade, which is a very normal shade to me based on what I’ve seen in the industry (many brands have released pink highlighters over the last decade that I’ve been following – no idea if they were out even before that) 🙂 I’m still not sure what’s wrong with unusual highlighters, though!

Atsuko Avatar

I’ve been curious about certain highlighter colors as well and a friend of mine explained to me the unique colors are meant to “balance” your tones. For example, she has more of a yellowish orange tone so the minty colored highlighter helps her look more neutral and toned down. I personally think these new colors are very pretty and this lilac one in particular looks like it gives a soft, feminine glow 🙂

So true i ve worn almost only warm ones on my olive tone but really get interested in pearl white cool pink and even “unicorn” colors lately. I can actually see them working for me for a change – depends on what color amount one is comfortable with. I actually crave it a lot outside my very corporate workplace at night and weekends.

Kim Avatar

I think someone with pink undertones in their skin might find this to be natural looking than the “normal” golds you see on the market.

I, for one, am really excited for all these fun expansions – weird or otherwise!

Dev Avatar

I have strong pink undertones and it really does look pretty darn natural on me. A very slight pink shift but not as much as I was expecting which makes it much more wearable. You are right, the normal golds look horrible on me in color and depth. These new highlight shades coming out from all brands are great for me (super pale) and for those with darker skintones.

Kristi Avatar

These were around in the 90’s. I could swear Revlon Street Wear had something like this because my friends and I were obsessed with the “fairy glow” and alternative shades.

Carrie Avatar

As someone with porcelain skin…this is way more wearable on me than a bronzer is, because I only “tan” after I burn. So I for one appreciate this trend, because until mid-last year I had to skip out on them all together because I couldn’t find shades that worked for me.

Linda Avatar

I think part of the holographic / more unnatural highlight shades might be geared towards festivals and clubs where you can get away with more dramatic, “unicorn” looks (along with all sorts of colored hair).

And from a marketing standpoint, bringing out “new” things you don’t already have is one way to keep selling more products.

The Jeffree Star black highlighter – I honestly think he’s trolling everyone with that one, like I’m so hot I could release a black highlighter and watch people try and make it work!

Enzee Avatar

Do you think it would show up on a skin tone ranging between nc20-nc25? It’s lovely but i don’t know if it’s worth the investment (as it would cost me around more than 50$ to get it in my country)

Katherine T. Avatar

It’s pretty, but glad I resisted and waited for your swatch/review! It’s such a close dupe to so many other highlighters, including CP Monster, which I already have. And from the name Amethyst, I was expecting a more purple or lilac color. Thank you !

Kim Avatar

Yup, Proseco pop is now permanent. I’m not going to run out to buy this. I don’t mind companies saying something is LE but then making it permanent. But how they can let their spokesperson say it definitely absolutely isn’t coming back is beyond my understanding. Yes, it’s only makeup… But I’d like my makeup with a side of integrity.

Well, the good news is, that highlighting has a slew of affordable options. Doubt I’ll even get to see this one irl; it’ll sell out instantaneously. I just wonder if I’d get the gold shift. Who knows, with my skin swallowing lavender tones, it might be straight up gold on me! I did order the Nyx lavender steel, and have old Dior and Nars shadows that fill these iridescent highlight niches, with tads of color shift. This one will look good over the Chris Chang CCB, UD Bittersweet, Rapture, and a host of others. Somehow, lucked onto the Ulta short window w/UD and used the coupon on Nyx. Win-win, for once. Wanted to try a Becca, but why fall in love all over again and buy in every color? Nice, though.

Alana Avatar

I wish it was more noticeably lavender. I don’t mind subtle highlighter shades and I’m sure people will appreciate how it’s not an in-your-face Lavender but I wish that Becca came out with something that is as unique and intriguing as Lorac Limelight was.

Pami Avatar

That is so pretty, and perfect for my fair/pink skin! It’s too close to UD Aura though for me to justify. If only this had come out first 😉

It used to be so hard to find highlighters like this, now they’re everywhere! I just wish I could have gotten the pink gold LE last fall in the rose gold compact. I was waiting for the sale and it sold out 🙁 Still, I’m thrilled to see so many highlighters for ALL skin tones, and at all price points too! 🙂

Got mine today! It’s beautiful! I swatched it on my hand mixing it with opal (which is way too deep for me). I love mixing my becca highlighters & these two blends nicely. I can’t wait to wear them together tomorrow!!

jen Avatar

Christine, your review says it is not as pigmented..or or metallic as the other becca highlighters…. also that it doesn’t have much a of a shift in colours.. So why did you give it an A-.. just curious..

Christine Avatar

It’s not as pigmented but it’s not like there’s no pigment – as you can see right in the rating, that it was rated 9/10 as it had good pigmentation but was not opaque. Otherwise, it blended out well, lasted nicely, was easy to use, and highlighted the skin. “Not as pigmented” doesn’t mean “not pigmented” – it means that while a lot of Becca’s highlighters are opaque, this one wasn’t as opaque.

Mariella Avatar

While I like this, I doubt I’d buy it because (and this surprises me) it seems almost too cool and “lavender-y”, if that makes any sense. And after the thread yesterday (about products you only need one of), I’m rethinking buying any more highlighters, since I have about 10 of them that I love and that are pretty much in new condition, I use them so sparingly and/or infrequently.

Ninna Avatar

Hi,
Thank you for reviewing this product! I had Champagne Pop which was a little too dark and yellow on my skin tone. I am normally NW20 in Mac. I then got the the Laura Mercier baked highlighter in 01 and it worked well with my skin tone.

This looks beautiful, but since it’s not available for me to try in the UK, I was thinking of ordering it online. My question is … Would this be ok for everyday highlighter?

I am sacred of it appearing purple on my skin. Also is this similar to the Stila
Heaven’s Hue Highlighter in Transcendence or the Kat Von D
Alchemist Holographic Palette, and out of the three which one is more glow within and would you recommend?
Thank you so much for your help, I hope you have a lovely day! xx

Paulette Avatar

I loved all the different colors. I think the pinks / lilac are Spring feeling. I don’t look that great with golds. I think I have the same skin tone as you Christine . It’s a lovely color on you.
Definitely want to try or swatch on my skin. You can always use it as on your eyes too. ?. .

Emmah Avatar

I was so so excited about this and now feel a little naive…it’s gorgeous but looks soooo similar to my urban decay aura and moonchild kit….trying to justify the $40 but as a college student I don’t think I can. Bummed out that it’s just not a bit more different 🙁 gotta return it for my wallets sake!

Celena Avatar

Hi Christine,
If you had to compare this Becca Highlighter to the Kevyn Aucoin lavender highlighter (Ibiza the Neo highlight) which would you say is more reflective (not glittery though) and is there a big color difference between the two? And, anything else you believe separates them from each other? Interested in purchasing one or the other, but can’t decide which (and they seem similar). For reference, I’m about a NC15-20 with olive undertones and dark eyes and hair

Christina Nguyen Avatar

I wonder if this is anything similar to the colors of the Anastasia MoonChild Glow Palette which I have barely touched. The packaging is so beautiful though and looks so enthereal on your skin, Christine!
