2017 Editor's Choice Awards | And the winners are...

I’m pleased to announce the winners of the 2017 Editor’s Choice Awards! These are my absolute, all-time favorites across various categories, with each category having two winners: a high-end and a budget-friendly. If you’ve ever wondered what the best products in beauty are, based on my experience, this is that list! The winners include a mix of newer and older, tried-and-true formulas–these are the very best products that I have personally tried over the last 10 years. Hope you enjoy reading this year’s list! 🙂

AND THE WINNERS ARE…

P.S. — Don’t forget to nominate your personal favorites in our annual Readers’ Choice Awards!

Please keep discussion on-topic, and if you have general feedback, a product review request, an off-topic question, or need technical support, please contact us!

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Hi Christine, thanks so much for your hard work as always! Just wanted to let you know that for some reason nothing happens when I click on the “and the winners are…” I tried clicking on the button using both Chrome and Safari. Thanks again!

I could see the list just fine. Wow — you put in so much work, Christine! I don’t agree with all your choices, but it’s a fascinating compilation. *Thank you* for your tireless efforts!

Glad the link is fixed because this list is a goldmine!! Definitely going to put some of these on my list – thank you so much Christine!

What a great list. The information is very well laid out…especially including the last few years for reference.

You are one of the hardest working bloggers out there. Your blog is a wonderful respite in an often chaotic world. Thanks so much for all your efforts. You make the world a nicer and better place one review at a time.

This is amazing, Christine! One problem: I didn’t see a budget highlighter. It went from high end highlight (I think it was Celestial) to high end powder (Guerlain Meteorites) to low end powder (Physicians Formula). Is this a mistake?

This so, so valuable! The savings in money and time to not have to go through trial and error across such a wide range of categories is immeasurable. Thank you

I can see a best budget powder highlighter or best budget powder eyeshadow and a few others. Are there only one option for some of the categories? Anyway this was super fun to read, thank you Christine!!! I always value your picks and recommendations!!

Thank you Christine!! I go through this list every year and make notes on what I need to buy. I so appreciate all the work you do – I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in Sephora and thought “better check Temptalia before I buy…” 🙂

Some of your categories need serious updating, like most of the “budget” options for foundations and such. Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse hasn’t existed for several years in the US, it was replaced by Dream Matte Mousse.

wow, this is epic. thanks for all the hard work!! “adding” Shiseido for underrated high end brand–I’ve used their lipsticks, powder and cream eyeshadows, and foundation and love them all.

Are you going to review the Smashbox Eye primer? I picked up the NARS based on your rec and am intrigued by your switch to the Smashbox!

Christine Avatar

Hopefully!

Overall, Smashbox is a little more forgiving for texture, I think. I still really love the NARS primer, but I like the smoothing aspect of the Smashbox (or MAC’s – seems to be an identical product, even by ingredients) a wee bit more!

I was a little disappointed in your review of High-end foundations, as you chose lines that offer very limited shades for WOC. Is that one of your criteria? I did agree with your your budget-friendly selections. I think a great new category might be “overall” lines for those starting out with make-up/or teens and those experienced wearers/or mature skin. I am approaching 50 this year and really have to search for shades that compliment my skin type and are age-appropriate or professional environment appropriate. . Great overall picks. Can’t wait to see our picks/winners.

Hi Chris,

Editor’s Choice Awards are picking my personal favorites in terms of quality formula that I would reach for over and over again. I understand that many brands fall short of an inclusive shade range. The shade range is something I consider but it is not heavily weighted compared to quality, longevity, how it sits and looks on the skin, etc.

At this point, we are only reducing the number of awards on the list or eliminating them altogether (I’m presently expecting to remove all awards going forward), as they are not proving to be useful.

chris Avatar

What, not useful? I just sent your link to a friend who daughter’s face I did yesterday. I send out your list every year. Please reconsider.

I’m a little confused by the Spring Collection choice, as it seems to not be a 2016 release…otherwise, loving the list and definitely got some ideas for new items to try from it—including past years is a great way to see if there might be something I’ve tried that was a previous pick but was bested this year by something I haven’t tried at all. 🙂
