Bite Beauty Hazelnut & Rosewood Butter Cream Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Bite Beauty Hazelnut Butter Cream Lipstick

Bite Beauty Butter Cream Lipstick ($28.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a creamy, thicker, and hydrating formula with good color payoff, light shine, and moderate wear time. The formula has eight shades, and I’ve tested two so far (I bought four initially, liked them enough to buy the remaining four for review, too). According to the brand, the selling point of the lipstick is that they “hand cut each bullet, removing the outer waxy layer,” which gives the lipstick an “impossibly creamy core.” They’re nice overall, and the only downside was that the thicker consistency may catch on flakes if you have them. It feels thicker than their Luminous Creme range, but they are less glossy. It is creamy, to a degree, but the slightly heavier and thicker texture make it firmer overall. It’s not as creamy as formulas like NARS Audacious or YSL Rouge Volupte (probably one of the creamiest formulas, all-time), but the thicker quality makes it adhere and stay on longer, as it doesn’t slide or slip all over the place. As a bonus, thicker lipsticks often cover more pigmented lips better.

As far as the “hand cut” bit, take it or leave it; I don’t really think it adds anything (Luminous Creme formula has a traditional bullet, and it’s very creamy and emollient!). My lips are large enough/shaped to the point where I didn’t have issues using the more bluntly cut edge to apply to my lips, but I still prefer the traditional shape for better precision. “Hand cut” is also not emblazoned on the actual bullet, it is just a translucent paper tab that is placed over it. The packaging is heavier and more substantial than the Luminous Creme formula–it feels weightier to me. The scent is similar to the rest of Bite’s products, which is a subtle fruit-y scent that seems more like what their base smells like than added fragrance.

Bite Beauty Hazelnut Butter Cream Lipstick ($28.00 for 0.15 oz.) is described as a “brown pink.” It’s a muted, medium-dark rosy brown with subtle, warm undertones and a satin sheen. It had mostly opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly. On me, it lasted for five hours and was hydrating over time. Marc Jacobs Beauty Roleplay (110) (P, $30.00) is lighter, more matte. Tom Ford Beauty Richard (LE, $32.00) is brighter, darker. Bite Beauty Glace (P, $24.00) is more matte, lighter. Tom Ford Beauty Negligee (LE, $50.00) is brighter, darker. NARS Bansar (P, $25.00) is browner. bareMinerals Break Away (LE) is warmer, lighter. Givenchy Rose d’Exception (206) (LE, $36.00) is cooler-toned, lighter. Revlon Pink Truffle (P, $7.49) is glossier, sheerer. NARS Tolede (P, $26.00) is pinker. MAC Grande Dame (P, $22.00) is warmer, brighter. MAC Gem of Roses (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery, cooler-toned. Giorgio Armani Blush (500) (P, $32.00) is lighter. Benefit La La Land (DC, $18.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Bite Beauty Rosewood Butter Cream Lipstick ($28.00 for 0.15 oz.) is described as a “plum rosewood.” It’s a dusky, medium-dark rosy plum with very subtle, warm undertones and a soft shine. It had good, mostly opaque color coverage with a lightly creamy, thickened consistency that went on evenly and smoothly. The color wore well for five hours and was moisturizing while worn. Tom Ford Beauty Cary (LE, $32.00) is slightly more matte. Tom Ford Beauty Richard (LE, $32.00) is warmer. Tom Ford Beauty Negligee (LE, $50.00) is warmer. Givenchy Brun Vintage (105) (P, $36.00) is lighter, brighter. Bobbi Brown Pink Rose (LE, $25.00) is lighter. Revlon Pink Truffle (P, $7.49) is sheerer, glossier. MAC Gem of Roses (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery, lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

This has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen released in the beauty industry. I don’t understand how “hand cutting” the tip off the lipstick (and subsequently a big chunk of it) is going to help application at all. And also wouldn’t a few applications of any traditional lipstick remove the top waxy layer? Seems like a huge marketing scam to me.

That being said, the colours do look lovely on you. I really just can’t buy into the marketing…

Sarah Avatar

Agreed! I’m not going to buy it just based on how utterly dumb the marketing for this is. And I also have my doubts this is truthfully handcut. It just makes absolutely no sense to claim that cutting off the tip of a lipstick makes it creamy! I’d rather get YSL Rouge Volupte… While more expensive, it does have broad spectrum sunscreen, which is better for your lips than the resveratrol in Bite’s formula anyway.

Lara Avatar

Second … or third etc. I’m sure I’ve fallen for silly beauty marketing over the years, but this one really makes me laugh. Thank you but no.

Blue Avatar

Ridiculous marketing, hand cut, what would be the difference it it was cut by a machine? I just can’t stop thinking there is somebody cutting these lipsticks whole day long. Dunno, kind of creeps me out.

I don’t think cutting does much to a lipstick (if it would the centre would be different to the outer edge of the bullet). I think it would be easier if it was cut at an angle, similar to traditional lipsticks, if that is inevitable.

Lovely colours though.

Lilac Avatar

Yep, that cutting-story does not make any sense. As far as I know, lipsticks are poured into a mould, thus the “material” would be liquid, with all ingredients mixed together and then they cool off and become solid. I don’t think there would be a reason why the waxes would gravitate towards the top (or bottom as it probably is a mould upside down), because I am sure lipstick in a cosmetics factory would be cooled off automatically and immediatly, they would not wait for them to cool off by themselves (which could take some time). Plus there is no weird waxy layer on any_lipstick I’ve ever bought in a store. The product is always equal from all sides.
Even if you make lipstick at home – as Bite maintains the aura of a smaller shop – there is no such outer layer (I once did some experimenting in chemistry class).

Maybe they mean that there is a wax layer in the mould to prevent the lipstick from sticking to it? But those usually are not on the finished product anyways, not at Bite beauty or elsewhere. PS: do you remember the wax bits that were on some MAC lipsticks last year? Just thought of that..

Jaa Avatar

Interesting concept about the cut but I wonder the same thing, if it really makes a difference. The formula sounds like a champ, though! And with the name like Hazel Nut / Butter Cream – it’s hard to resist getting at least one to try!

Kristen Avatar

I was like “Oooh, Rosewood… pretty.” Then realized that I own Negligee, Cary, Brun Vintage, and Pink Truffle. Yup, it’s a problem. πŸ˜‰

Alla Avatar

Fairly creamy but without too much slip? Yeah, I’ll take it, especially since I really wanted to buy TF Cary but just missed it (they still had the tester out!)

Aline Avatar

These look really nice, though I wish they had the traditional shape because I’m very picky about the way I apply lipstick. I’m looking forward to seeing the plum color, as that looked like a good one for me. Both look really pretty on you.

Raeanne Avatar

Hazelnut is described as a brown-pink but your description says Rosewood. I think you have the names of the colors switched in the descriptions. πŸ˜‰

Jessica T Avatar

This formula looks great! I already have Glace which is a very close dupe. I’m curious to see the other colors and I’m excited for your reviews to come! I love Bite so I probably won’t be able to resist picking up at least 1 of these!

Meghan Avatar

Are Rosewood and Hazelnut names supposed to be the other way around in the review portion? The dupe list has GlacΓ© etc. as a dupe for Hazelnut, but in the review portion it’s listed as a dupe for Rosewood πŸ™‚

Otherwise I’m so glad they performed well! Good job Bite Beauty to keeping those standards high! I’m glad that it’s not less product either, that would be a let down.

Katherine T. Avatar

Oh, these MLBB colors are great and A rated as well! I love the dupe Revlon Pink Truffle, but it is sheerer, so I might pick up one of these. Glad these are permanent. I don’t like their color-of-the-month marketing scheme, where can’t test or see swatches in advance, it’s all sold out within an hour or day, AND they charge you more ($36) for it. All it does is make frustrated customers check out cheaper dupes from their competitors! I think BITE has so many great lipsticks that they shouldn’t have to resort to these gimmicky marketing tactics. Or at least have the sense to keep it in stock for the month, so everyone has a chance to buy it.

Mari Na Avatar

the flat bullet is absurd to me. this would suck for those with small lips lolol unless u use a brush but what’s the fun in that? guess i’m more traditional, i like pulling out my bullet lippie wherever i am and applying with the whole compact in hand thing

pretty colours tho but so dupeable meh idk blah all around. definitely a purchase if u love the packaging and brand label //kanyeshrug//

AndreaK Avatar

In the section where you describe the shades singularly, you have the names switched. First you talk about Rosewood and describe Hazelnut and the talk about Hazelnut while describe Rosewood.

Christine Avatar

LOL! I changed it because a reader pointed out I used the same twice, but I have three paragraphs where the name is written (I normally have two, one for each shade) so I went to the second one… which was really the first. It should be right now.

Nicole Avatar

I must say I was skeptical on these prior to your review. Nice to see they are performing well and that you are not losing product with the “hand-cut” bullet. They both look lovely on you! can’t wait to see how the others turn out! πŸ™‚

Rachel R. Avatar

These are beautiful, and the formula sounds great. I’m not sure what the gimmick is with the “hand cut,” but whatever. I’ve never had problems with a waxy layer.

Christine Avatar

I’ve never had an issue with a creamy formula not being… creamy because of the outer layer so much, haha. Probably by the time I’ve swatched it, done a lip swatch, and then actually put it on to test, it’s already worn away any “layer.”

Skye Avatar

Well I have to agree the whole hand cut thing was no enticement what so ever for me, but Bite beauty puts out a quality product. I own several shades that I absolutely love. When I saw these two colors I was on the Sephora website in a hot minute to get them both. I’m not crazy about the shape but those colors……..I have to have them. The wait will be interminable.

Trish Avatar

Those look great on you, Christine and I love the colors. How do you think they’ll apply with a lip brush? A brush for lips products seems to be an unnecessary step, but there’s no way that flat surface will apply well to my little, sharply defined upper lip – very defined cupid’s bow, with a very defined angle from upper lip to skin (if that makes sense). Lipliner is a longtime friend of mine.

I always get on well with very pointy lipsticks because I’m lazy unless I’m going out for the evening.

Jan Avatar

Although I prefer traditional bullet shaped lipstick these were not a problem for me. They are truly creamy. I find them very moisturizing and soothing on my dry lips. I was fortunate to have received them as a gift.

Trina Avatar

I don’t have “big” lips, not plump. So with it not having a traditional tip do you think application will be more difficult? Especially in small spaces on the top lip.
i really like the color of rosewood but this entire concept of hand cut is a little cheesy and does not justify a price increase.

Bonnie Avatar

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this was ridiculous!!! I don’t even have a problem with the blunt-cut bullet (I have several pixi lip products that are cut the same and no issues)…my issue is the verbiage used to market the product like its something uber unique and special because they hacked off the top. RIDIC.

Kyle Avatar

OMG – I need this duo by Tom Ford NOW, I just can’t get enough of this eye look, stunning! Why must you taunt me so with two shadows that cost as much as a whole palette!!

Alice Avatar

I have Rosewood and really love the color and the formula. I don’t care about the hand cut aspect of it, and didn’t see it as a big part of the product’s appeal. I think what is appealing about this lipstick is that it’s moisturizing, pigmented, and long wearing. I wish there were some cooler tones, though.

Titian06 Avatar

When clicking on the “see more dupes” link to the right of The Dupes List: Rosewood, it takes me to the top of this article! (Review/photos/swatches for Bite Beauty Hazelnut and Rosewood lipsticks.)

Sylirael Avatar

Well, don’t these look gorgeous? πŸ˜€ Rosewood is especially pretty out of these two.

The marketing is completely ridiculous, but doesn’t disadvantage you much (i.e. it’s not twice the price and doesn’t lose you any lipstick mass). I’m a bit torn still though – sometimes I feel like I should avoid certain things based on the marketing, just because it feels like they’re taking us all for a lot more brainless/more frivolous than we really are… (hello, first world problems πŸ˜‰ )

I don’t want to read too much into marketing copy though – if I did, I don’t think I’d ever buy anything, ha! πŸ˜‰

The color pictured here as Hazelnut isn’t Hazelnut. No way. Not even close. Hazelnut is brownish pink with a distinct purple undertone, and what you see here is a peachy light rose. My best guess is what’s pictured is Heather. So the only similarity involved here is the letter H. Not good.

Christine Avatar

Hi Alison,

What is shown is Hazelnut – Heather is here: http://www.temptalia.com/product/bite-beauty-butter-cream-lipstick/heather?i=189759

I’m not seeing “peachy light rose” in the photos. Here’s how I described Hazelnut in the post above: “It’s a muted, medium-dark rosy brown with subtle, warm undertones and a satin sheen.”
