Bite Beauty Smashed Agave Lip Mask Review, Photos, Swatches

Bite Beauty Smashed Agave Lip Mask ($26.00 for 0.52 oz.) is described as a “universal red-wine tint.” It’s a brightened, cherryr ed with cool undertones that turns to more of a pinky-red color applied to lips. NARS Shade IV (LE, $26.00) is warmer. Josie Maran Always Cherry (P, $18.00) is warmer. NARS Rose Gitane (P, $26.00) is warmer. MAC Wake Up! (P, $22.00) is warmer. MAC Night is Young (LE, $20.00) is similar. MAC Love Alert (LE, $20.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I haven’t used this extensively (as I would if I was testing a lip balm’s healing/hydrating properties), though I have previously reviewed the original. This is more of a quick review to show how the newest tinted version looks. I think those who were disappointed by the subtle nature of the Champagne version will find this more palatable, as it produces a very noticeable reddish tint to lips. It will be nice for those who have good luck with this formula who want a little more color during the day but need the ultra-hydrating properties of the original. The formula is thicker and heavier, fairly tacky, and the color seems to fade faster than the feel of the balm, where the color seems to disappear after three to four hours, the balm lingers for five to six with some lingering as long as eight hours. The past iterations of this formula have been hydrating for me, and I found this one to feel much like those. The only critique I really have is that it doesn’t always look completely even applied, which is often the nature of sheer, but vibrant, shades like this.

I like the original but I hate how the packaging flakes off. It was a MESS in my bag for awhile. I would just see black flakes sitting on the bottom of my purse or makeup bag. It’s almost done completely flaking off which is a good thing I guess:/ but i do like the product itself, just wish they would leave the tube bare or something. Won’t be purchasing again because of that. Great review as always 🙂

I guess I have the older packaging and I didn’t even know lol I got it shortly after it came out. I’ll have to head to sephora to check it out in person

i have both the new and old packaging. my old one split and i had to depot into a small travel jar (i think i got it at target). it works really well. maybe that would solve your problem. the new packaging is better, but its still not great.

I NEED!!! With all the cute matte lippys I’ve been rocking lately, my lips are begging for mercy! And this looks really pretty while granting ones lips respite!

Meh…for $ 26, the color is too sheer and uneven for me. And I don’t like using fingers to apply this to my lips (gross). I can also see myself trying to unscrew the tiny cap and the cap goes flying off onto the dirty floor or behind the refrigerator. If they made this into a convenient twist-up lip balm, with some more pigmentation, I would consider it if it was really hydrating and long-lasting. And it would be great if they also came out with an SPF 15 version for daytime wear.

I want to try these so much! I wish they’d change the packaging to include an applicator tip, though, because applying with my fingers skeeves me out.

Love the finish. I always draw towards lipglosses/balms/lipsticks that look like that. My only problem with this it doesnt have lip glide top like Too Face Melted for instance or lipgloss tubes that generally have it. For this you would have to place on your finger and glide. Meh.

Glad to see this new color would be great for day wear. I love the Agave Lip Mask so much that I apply a thick layer of it on my lips every night before sleep. It heals my lips nicely no matter what condition my lips were in before the application.. I’m now half tube down with the Champagne one. Can’t wait to get Smashed for a new look!

Thank you for reviewing this, Christine! I’ve been on the fence about whether or not to purchase it for about a week now, & the only reason I haven’t purchased is mainly because of the color, & a little because of the lack of reviews to reference on Sephora’s site. I really love my Fresh lip balms, but I fly through the lighter colored ones like Rosé, so I was looking for something longer lasting & thought this might work…
In your opinion, which is longer lasting & more hydrating, this Smashed Agave Lip Mask, or Josie Maran’s Creamy Infinity Oil (used only on the lips)?

Cory Avatar

I’m a dummy! Nvm, I’ll just look at your review for Josie’s Argan Infinity & compare to this one. & on a serious note, thank you for reviewing this (& everything!), I really appreciate your reviews, they really make or break a lot of my personal/gift makeup purchases!
You RAWK!

Cory Avatar

Ty! You nailed that! I tried a sample of the Infinity Argan from last night, & found myself feeling like I needed to put more on after a very short time period (like a half hour!). I can’t even imagine putting it on my cheeks! I’m going to try this Smashed Agave “Mask”, Ty again!

Oh wow! This looks lovely! I’m on a drugstore kick now, but if this will work well to rehab my lips when needed I can totally justify buying this 🙂 The colour really looks lovely. I can deal with a bit of unevenness if the formula is good.

Wow it’s a lot more pigmented than I thought it would be. I’m fine with the original though so I can pass on this. I really wish Bite would change the applicator though. I love that they changed the metal tubes but these are still hard to apply without a brush or using your fingers

I love the original and decided I’m going to pick this up during the Spring VIB sale this month! My lips get so chapped lately if I don’t wear a good lip balm and this is the best, and the red tint makes it perfect for daytime! I find it a little misleading/surprising that they used artificial red coloring (Red lake) instead of some sort of natural pigment since this line is all about being organic, natural, and food grade… but I will let that slide. I’m guessing any natural pigments wouldn’t mix as smoothly with the thick formula. I’ve noticed my lips almost get so used to the original though, that when I stop using it daily they get really super dry :-/
