Gucci Iconic Ottanio Impact Longwear Eye Pencil Review, Photos, Swatches
Gucci Iconic Ottanio Impact Longwear Eye Pencil
Gucci Iconic Ottanio Impact Longwear Eye Pencil ($32.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a bold, brightened medium-dark blue with a pearly sheen and subtle sparkle. Urban Decay Mainline (P, $19.00) is darker. Urban Decay Abyss (P, $19.00) is brighter. MAC Mountain Air (P, $20.00) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
The formula is supposed to be “intensely colored” while gliding on smoothly and sets after 30 seconds. It is supposed to have 12-hour wear and be waterproof. The eyeliner is actually really, really good. Regular readers will know I’m fond of teal eyeliner (it is a lot bluer than it looks in the promos), and in a fit of madness, I gave in and added Iconic Ottanio to my Gucci order. A lot of the ultra high-end eyeliner formulas are unimpressive, so I was surprised at how well it performed. The wear was twelve hours, and I still had the majority on after fourteen hours–and as you might expect, it does take a superb makeup remover and a cotton swab to remove (I use Lancome Bi-Facil). The color payoff in one stroke is semi-opaque, and it was fully opaque after two layers. It had a lightly creamy consistency that didn’t drag or tug on the lash line, but it didn’t feather or smudge.
I bought mine from Gucci.com, and it is also available for pre-order at Saks and Neiman Marcus. Some items from the beauty range seem to be in stock but most are showing as back ordered until late October (the official launch is October). I did a chat with Saks’ customer service last night, and the representative I chatted with said that you can return cosmetics “if only used once” and the representative could only confirm this was the online return policy but stores may have a different policy. I don’t live near one, so I have next to nil experience with Saks, and I have never attempted to return cosmetics to Saks (either online or in-store).

That is a beautiful color! But ow that price tag. lol.
Oh, yeah, the price tag is rough. I really liked the formula, though I wish it was truer to the swatch on Gucci’s site (I am not really surprised that reality and the promo differ), then I think I’d personally LOVE it.
That is an interesting, intence, beautiful blue. Really lovely.
On the upside, at least it was a more unique blue… almost “warm.”
Love it on you! Perfect for your color eyes. Good impulse buy, I say.
Thanks, Ginny!
Such a pretty color! I just finished my teal Smashbox liner, so this could be a good follow-up color!
Wow! Finished an eyeliner! Props!
Ha ha Another “Teal” Christine! Although like you said its much more blue but so so pretty on you! I have a problem wearing shimmery eyeliners in the waterline.. my eyes cry them out completely in seconds! How does it feel on the waterline..?
It’s wayyy bluer than I’d like (personally). I didn’t have any issues wearing this on the lash line/waterline (I don’t really intentionally try to wear on my waterline, but it… gets on there, too).
Love the way it looks on you!
Thank you, Kelly!
What blush are you wearing here? Such a soft pink coral soooo pretty!! I would say it’s Tom Ford Love Lust if it was more on the orange side with a gold shimmer…
Here you go, Dany!
THE MAKEUP LOOK
On face: Guerlain Parure de Lumiere Foundation, Urban Decay Naked Loose Finishing Powder, Gucci Coral Flower Blush. On eyes: Gucci Iconic Ottanio Eyeliner. On lips: Gucci Potent Violet Lipgloss.
Just as a FYI, the info (if I’m wearing more than just foundation!) is usually at the end of the post, under the last photo 🙂
That color is beautiful!!
I have to ask–where do you get those gorgeous earrings?!
here you go, Risa! https://www.etsy.com/shop/bellaanelajewelry
I’m so glad the formula turned out nicely. I was eyeing this when I saw the promo pictures. It’s a beautiful color!
Me too! 🙂
Oh wow, what a beautiful color! I have heard nothing but good things about these liners.
I was pleasantly surprised!
What a gorgeous color!
It is quite pretty!
This looks SO pretty on you! Such a beautiful jewel toned color!
Thanks, Aditi!
That color is right up your alley, Christine! You look so stunning with jewel tones on! 🙂
Aw, thank you, Christina! <3
Though it is dupable, this looks beautiful on you with the look you pulled together, it’s all so lovely on you! How do you kike the gloss? I’ve heard mostly negative yet I would rather hear it from you. 🙂 Very pretty!
Gloss is disappointing!
I used to live near a Saks – well, the Saks in my area recently closed. They were notoriously bad on returns – they didn’t want to take anything back. I rarely shopped there and a good friend stopped shopping there based solely on their crappy return policy. Luckily, we still have a Nordstrom near us – with their famously awesome return policies!
<3 Nordstrom!
From how it looks in the pencil, I was expecting something more complex looking in swatch form. Not special enough for me at that price…actually, just not special enough, period.
LOL! It should feel special at this price point.
Ahhhh I’m so happy you reviewed this color and that the wear is good. I’ve been dying over that color in the promos, and I figured it wouldn’t last, as so many don’t. I’m THISCLOSE to caving on this and the Iconic Red lipstick…
Shani x
Did you cave? 😉
Well now I’m adding this and the matching shadow to my holiday wishlist. I’ve been looking for a more blue based teal. I suppose you could call this peacock blue?
I think you could!
Looks beautiful on you.
Thank you!
I have this and it is very close to being a dupe to the Chanel Metallic Blue it released late summer. If you see the quads in person, very close to Tom Ford quads. To me, you don’t need both.
I appreciate you letting me know! 😀
You usually don’t test eyeliners in the waterline (which makes me sad because thats where I use my eyeliners most, but I understand some are not safe for the waterline) but it appears this one you put in the waterline? It does not specify that thats where you used it or if the hours of wear are for use on the lid or waterline
Hi Jessica,
I may get some on the water line inadvertently when I am applying on my lower lash line, but all testing is based on lower lash line unless otherwise specified as waterline.
oh okay you must have a steady hand to get it that close! it really looks like its in the waterline!
Once again I love the product color but not the price tag.
I hear ya!!
Lovely unique blue, but…$32 for an eyeliner. Uh, no.
It looks stunning with your brown eyes, though.
I hear ya – it is pricey! There are a lot of really great eyeliners at all price points, so $32 is an indulgence for sure.
What a gorgeous colour – it looks very striking on you Christine.
Thanks, Genevieve!
Oooo, this is a rather nice teal/turquoise eyeliner! *voice of a connoisseur, LOL* I like how it’s bright, but dark at the same time, if that makes sense. Although this brand isn’t really available to me, and although I’d probably buy Abyss first, I’m really pleased this one performed so well, especially after that lipstick/soap thing… 🙂
Totally agree with you, Sylirael! It’s bright but still dark.
I like that colour a LOT.
It’s awesome!
i am a sucker for blue and teal eyeliners…i just might have to try this. thanks for including the saks return policy info. do you happen to know about neiman marcus’ return policy in regards to cosmetics?
Neiman Marcus is none, I think. But it might be worth calling or chatting online if they have that service!
It’s nice, but I feel that it’d have to be a unicorn of a color for me to pay that much for eyeliner. Especially since the drugstore liners have stepped up their game, and almost all those lines have a black, a brown, a purple, and a teal at the bare minimum.
It’s good to hear the formula is there. I totally get wanting to pay extra for a luxury product, especially if it looks nice, but it’s so revolting when a pricier product can’t perform.
So true – there is nothing that gets me angrier faster than a really poor performing, incredibly expensive product. No excuses!
