Sneak Peek: Urban Decay Shadow Box Photos & Swatches

Urban Decay Shadow Box Eyeshadow Palette
Urban Decay Shadow Box Eyeshadow Palette

Urban Decay Shadow Box Eyeshadow Palette ($34.00 for 12 x 0.01 oz.) includes twelve eyeshadows–three are new and exclusive to the palette and nine are previously released shades. I’m working my way through testing these, so I hope to have a review up soon. Two things I noticed were that Bordello is noticeably warmer in this palette, and Tornado lacks some of the intensity of the original, though the colors are similar (it’s just like one has more depth). Full review to come! 🙂

You have Moonshadow labeled as Evidence? Could they be dupes…? If so, I think I can pass on this palette, and wait for Vice 3. I can always buy Bordello as a single, and I have shades similar enough to Tornado & Indo, and have all the rest… The price is great, but with V3 coming, I’d rather save my pennies for that, and not have to worry about tracking this one down.

A Name Avatar

Not bad for the price, but I already have 3 of the shades (2 of smog actually in Naked palette and I just got the single :D), and Lost is the only other one I really want. Indo looks nice, but the texture looks powdery.

Julie Avatar

Hmmm…. So moonshadow is the same as evidence. Makes this less appealing to me, since I have smoked and the naked 1 palette… Also the size… .01 oz? Aren’t “normal” eye shadows about .05? This is looking more & more like a pass 🙁

Elizabeth Avatar

Thank you for the research! I thought that Urban Decay palettes were the greatest deal, but when you broke it down, you are right about the cost per shadow. There are three colors in this palette I would love to have, but I am going to cross my fingers and hope that these unique colors become a single by popular demand. With all of the Urban Decay products and eye shadows palettes I already have, I just can’t justify the price. Not just for three shadows at this point.

Maddie Avatar

I was excited about this one but after actually seeing the swatches and consciouly acknowleding I have half of these shades and the other half don’t really excite me, I’ll be passing. Can’t WAIT to see the Vice 3 though *_*

Stacey Avatar

I am not getting this set….too little in the packaging. Even other sets are .03.
I am going to wait for Vice #3.
Sin is my most used color.
I must say UD shadows are the most pigmented and I need to use less per application.
UD also last a long time and works well with my mono lid eyes.

Jennifer B. Avatar

Really?! The only matte color is black?! Ugh! I feel like I have to buy the Naked Basics pallete to make this work with all the shimmer. Pretty colors though! I think I’ll still get it. I’m a sucker. 😛

Georgia Avatar

I love how Moonshadow looks however I can’t justify buying this palette just for one eyeshadow when I already own 9 out of the 12 eyeshadows in this palette. I wonder if there is a drugstore dupe for moonshadow. Is the UD shadow box a part of the permanent line or is it limited edition? Also, will you be reviewing the miniature lipstick set that UD is planning to release?

xamyx Avatar

The dark blue L’Oréal Infallible (the name escapes me at the moment, but it is permanent-sorry!) may be similar enough for you. It’s worth a look, at least! HTH

Georgia Avatar

Thank you for the suggestion. I think you’re referring to midnight blue shade. I have the infallible eyeshadow in midnight blue but I forgot that I had it in my collection.

Staci Avatar

I have $50 in rewards at Ulta. Now I know what I’m using them for, pending a good review. Smog and blackout are the only shades I have. I hit pan on sin.

Jo Avatar

Totally understandable! Mushroom is a great shade! Not sure if it is just my monitor or how it looks on my lid but it seems a bit warmer in this swatch?
And the Blackout in my 15th Anniversary palette seems to be better pigmented, but again, only judging on lid application, not swatch.

Danielle Avatar

It seems everyone else has a lot of crossover in their palettes.XD I don’t personally since I only own 3 UD palettes. Is it just me or is Freelove similar to Freebird being a pinky-coral with gold shimmer/glitter from the original Vice? The pan and swatch remind me so much of Freebird. So (possibly) 3 crossovers out of a total 12 shades isn’t a deterent for me. I’ll see what Vice 3 (as hideous as I find its packaging) actually has so I can finish the Christmas list.

Why doesn’t this have a Good Karma brush though? When they remade Ammo, it got it’s own mini Good Karma over the original dual-ended sponge tip!

Mel Avatar

Let’s hope so, can’t stand another palette with Sin, Mushroom, Half Baked, Smog, Blackout, Midnight (something), maybe a travel size Zero pencil? Ugh
They NEED to come up with new colors… Different finishes. I was thinking, I don’t think they have eggplant/burgundy/aubergine eyeshadows at all.

Cat Avatar

I keep looking at your swatches and comparing Sin, Bordello, Mushroom, Lost, and Tornado to the swatches I just did on my own arm (of single shadows I own or from older UD palettes) and… WTH?!? Have they alter the colors and/or formulation THAT much? You are spot-on about Tornado and Bordello, but… (in the older colors I own) Sin seems denser, more pigmented, Lost is less frosted and darker, and Mushroom is not as warm and less silvery (if that makes sense).

I thought it was just me, so I asked two other family members to look at the comparisons and they agreed. My daughter pointed out that your skin has different undertones than mine, but that would only mean that Mushroom should look even warmer on me than on you. I really hope the colors in this palette were the result of a terrible accident because the shadows I have are MUCH nicer. The change in Bordello is especially disheartening. 🙁

Lauren Avatar

Not tempting… I already have Sin, Smog, Lost, Mushroom, Evidence (the color here looks he same), and Blackout. I have others that look similar to the other colors. I think this means I’m maxed out on UD eyeshadows.

Jenn Avatar

Considering I have both Dangerous and Feminine Palettes… It might be a pass since it has 3 of the colors on there. I never knew Lost was permanent and so I brought Fem just for that shade. (at least it was $16 at the time!) I can now see why Moonstruck can be seen as Evidence (in the pan on my Dangerous palette). Christine, if you still have the Feminine Palette from 2012, does the Bordello match this one?
It’s going to have to be Vice 3 VS Shadow Box, although I think this might end up in the shadowy place of Ulta’s shelves…

Sylirael Avatar

Hm, after seeing this, what I’d really like are: Freelove, Tornado and Indo. Freelove I believe I could technically get as a single, and I’m not sure if I want to finagle a way to buy another whole (Ulta exclusive?!) palette just for a couple of tiny pans of Indo and Tornado…

Is it just me or are greens kind of underrepresented in UD’s permanent shade lineup? Don’t get me wrong, I love that they have lots of purples and turquoises, but darker and truer greens don’t seem to figure as prominently…
