Marc Jacobs Beauty (Stone)Fox (58) & (Luna)tic (64) Highliner Gel Eye Crayons Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Marc Jacobs Beauty (Stone)Fox (58) Highliner Gel Eye Crayon
Marc Jacobs Beauty (Stone)Fox (58) Highliner Gel Eye Crayon ($25.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “metal grey.” It’s a medium-dark, warm-toned gray with a metallic, silver sparkle and sheen. It had so-so color payoff in a single stroke, and it was buildable to mostly opaque color payoff. This shade wore well for eight and a half hours on my lash line. Buxom I’ll Be Waiting (P, $17.00) is lighter. Urban Decay Uzi (P, $19.00) is less shimmery. Chanel Gris Scintillante (P, $29.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Marc Jacobs Beauty (Luna)Tic (64) Highliner Gel Eye Crayon ($25.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “metallic pale lavender.” It’s a cool-toned, gray-ish lavender with a metallic sheen. It was semi-sheer applied in a single pass and buildable to semi-opaque color. This particular shade works well for brightening the eye. It lasted for just over eight and a half hours on me. MAC Heirloom (P, $16.00) is less metallic. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
I have a love/hate relationship with this formula (see my original review here). I often reach for Marc Jacobs’ eyeliners, because there’s just something slightly unique about the shade range, and despite them not performing well on paper, I still like them a lot personally. Both shades have a creamy, glide-on consistency that doesn’t pull or tug at the lash line, but they’re not exactly “richly pigmented” as described. They build, and once on the lash line, even semi-opaque looks almost opaque unless you’re viewing it very close-up (which no one is), but for the price point (and how little you get–0.01 oz. and these twist-up, no sharpening required), I wish they were as pigmented as they’re supposed to be.

Stone is the quintessential taupe!
It’s very nice!
Ooo, these look interesting!
(Luna)tic is my pick between the two!
The pigmentation does seem a bit soft looking at the swatches, but I totally agree with you that the colors are very unique and therefore worth looking into.
Such a love/hate relationship, lol!
I have a love/hate relationship with the only one I own…black. It’s one of a few brands that stay on my watery waterline. I also use it to tight line, which is fine. My hate is that you can not touch up without removing what is left on the waterline. But, the colors are so pretty.
Ooh, that’s a bummer! I never touch-up eyeliner so that’s not something I would have noticed.
I picked up Lunatic from Sephora Friday and it’s LOVE! These are fantastic guys. Seriously.
Yay!
These are so gorgeous and glowy! Will have to check them out 🙂
Let me know if you like ’em!
(Stone)fox looks pretty! I was actually interested in (Luna)tic when I saw the new shades up at sephora.com, but it didn’t seem lavender-y in your swatch… Maybe I should try finding a store that carries the new shades already in my area.
It’s a very pale, gray-ish lavender – I see the lavender in it, but it’s not say pastel, cheery lavender? if that makes sense.
Greyish lavender instead of pastel? Awesome. 😀 I should really check it out then!
Both of these shades are pretty cool!
Glad ya liked ’em! Have you tried the formula before?
Oh crap..I just put in a Sephora order yesterday.. maybe I’m saved from having to have these. I really like them both. They are quite different from anything else.
“Stone Fox” will always make me think of Josh Harnett in The Virgin Suicides.. that guy is just too yummy for words.
I couldn’t resist. I at least managed to only buy a few of the new shades…
Super pretty! Love the packaging aswell!
Happy to hear you liked ’em, Jess!
Can they work as eyeshadows? (Luna)tic seems like it could be a unique lid color…
You could probably do so, but with 0.01 oz., maybe not a great way to use it, lol! It’s also a regular pencil eyeliner, so the tip is small and may not as comfortable used all over the lid vs. a jumbo pencil.
Not unique enough for the price!
Bummer!
Stone Fox is a stone cold fox!
Haha!
Given that neither has the best color payoff, which would you recommend, (Luna)tic or Heirloom?
Luna(tic)!
Oh I love love love these!! I actually like semi opaque color for my lower lash line…current faves are UD’s Mushroom & Ether…how would tou say these compare to those shades? Worth having the Marc Jacobs liners, too? Thank you so much!
Ether is darker, purpler… I wouldn’t say similar at all. Mushroom is much warmer-toned, browner – more of a brownish-taupe color. Neither are very similar I’d say!
I love the way Lunatic looks! It’s very unique! I wish it was more pigmented though
Exactly my feelings!
Ooh, a stealth purple! I really like the colour of (Luna)tic! 😀 *adds item to ridiculous list of MJ things to check out*
That list is going to get long 😉
$25.00 for 0.01 oz means $2,500.00 for 1 oz, which means this so-so performing eyeliner is more expensive than gold. i really think i’d rather have the gold for the price. this is really kind of ridiculous.
It’s pretty common for twist-up eyelineres to be 0.01 oz., so consider brands like Dior and Chanel – even higher 😉
(Luna)tic is a pretty unique shade. I think I’ll try it in person when I have a chance!
I have the purple liner in this range (can’t remember the name right now), and I actually love the formula.
If it’s the darker purple, that’s one of the best I’ve tried from the range.
Oh, (Luna)tic is such an otherworldly complex shade! I adore it so much!!!! Wow! They are both gorgeous, though I’m lemming for the (Luna)tic ! Christine, could you please delve more deeply, beyond the afire mentioned link, about your relationship with these? I’ve never tried one. I’m curious to hear your encouragement and discouragement due to your honesty. Thank you! <3 XOXO
There’s not much to say other than they aren’t as pigmented as they should be/claim, but the colors are more unique than not, so I end up wanting and reaching for them in spite of their shortcomings!
I think the fact you reach for them outweighs the negative, yes? 😉 something about them makes you love them! Are you going to review the other new colors as well? I’d love to see them!
What do you think the *ultimate* smooth long lasting bright color eye liners (pencil/crayon/non-liquid) are? Brand, etc. Thanks! I have to change routine due to getting glasses… Grrrrrr 😎
Tarina Tarantino’s are my favorite for pencil eyeliners 🙂
Thank you! I will have to look into the gems! 🙂 xo
Stone is a gorgeous metallic shade.. liked it a lot!! 🙂
Yay!
These two colors are so, so gorgeous!
They totally are!
Lunatic is so pretty!,
It’s very unusual!
