Guerlain Madame Batifole (860) Rouge G Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

Guerlain Madame Batifole (860) Rouge G Lipstick
Guerlain Madame Batifole (860) Rouge G Lipstick

Guerlain Madame Batifole (860) Rouge G Lipstick ($49.50 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “vibrant fuchsia.” It’s a medium-dark, berry red with cool, blue undertones and a pearly micro-shimmer. Urban Decay Venom is purpler. Guerlain Liu is darker, redder. NARS Valparaiso is purpler, matte. MAC Love Goddess is brighter, pinker. Guerlain Bee is purpler. Guerlain Nuit d’Amour is purpler, darker. Burberry Bright Plum is matte, slightly darker. See comparison swatches.

I feel like it’s been awhile since Guerlain has released any new/limited Rouge Gs, so I’m happy to see three releasing as part of the fall collection. I received this one yesterday, and I bought the other two from a Neiman Marcus store (but they’re shipping them here, so I’m not sure exactly when it will arrive–hopefully soon!). It’s incredibly pigmented and nearly opaque in a single pass. The consistency is lightly creamy but not heavy. It wears well for six and a half hours, and it leaves a stain that lingers for another two and a half hours. It’s nicely hydrating, and it is very comfortable to wear. I didn’t experience any feathering or bleeding while wearing the color. The lipstick is scented with violets.

This shade will be releasing online and in-stores this month, and Neiman Marcus stores seem to have the collection in-store already as well as online.

Don’t worry about it, thank you for the reply! I bought Rouge Byzantin thinking it would be a shimmery version of Love Goddess, but now I think Mme Batifole might fit the bill better, since it’s pinker. What do you think? 🙂

Man, the prices they ask for this or other high-end lipsticks are crazy here, in POOR Romania…they’re bigger than in the US!

I saw these at the mall today and I think this tiny thing is 70$ here(that’s a third or quarter of the average salary here)…so not worth it!
Most shades are also very shimmery which kinda ruins them and makes them look cheap in the tube.
I googled its ingredients and it has nothing of the advantages that I would require of a high-end lipstick(and any, to be honest)-> it has fragrance, which is bad but at least it’s at the end of the list….BUT it also has aluminium hydroxyde which is cangerigenic(like all aluminium) and BHT which is most likely cangerigenic, too. It also has Bismuth Oxychloride; a lot of people are allergic to that, I read(It’s most used in *mineral* make-up).

The only naturally hydrating thing this has is ozokerite(some cheap stuff have more of those). Other than that, it’s emollients. So it’s just an average lipstick. The long-lasting feature comes from the high amount of lead in the pigments. More lead, more long-lasting, more cancerigenic. At least it’s not drying but ugh… the aluminiun and crazy price really put me off.

I just felt like setting things straight about these all-smoke and mirrors brands, nothing to do with you. It is indeed long-wearing and a bit moisturizing but at what cost? The pigmentation is nice but I can find pigmented lipsticks at most brands.

Could you please cite your sources? It would be great if you would contextualize and provide more information. 🙂 Do you know who tested the lipstick for lead? I did not see it on the FDA’s expanded test (I did a ctrl+f search for “guerlain” and didn’t get any results), which is the list I’m most familiar with, but I could have missed it. Definitely would love to read more!

here are its ingredients:
http://www.sephora.com/rouge-automatique-P286611

(they never ever list lead on any lipstick’s ingredients list-it’s obvious why-but it is found in some pigments)

About aluminium hydroxide:
http://www.drugs.com/sfx/aluminum-hydroxide-side-effects.html

While it is not the same as the kind of aluminiun that was proved to cause cancer, the fact that it is a form of aluminium makes it a neurotoxin…and that ain’t no good if one ingests it.

http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/neurotoxin

For example, botox is fine when just injected in the skin but if ingested, deadly or in the best case, the person won’t be able to move.
Another thing to consider is that the body has tons of substances in it naturally or coming from food that may lead to a reaction that can turn an aluminium salt into another, the chlorhydrate one. All there is needed is a switch of some sort. Tap water has a lot of chlorine in it so voila. There are still a lot of bad stuff that are harder to avoid but I can avoid this one.

http://www.truthinaging.com/ingredients/aluminum-hydroxide

and “Some toxicity can be traced to deposition in bone and the central nervous system, which is particularly increased in patients with reduced renal function. Because aluminium competes with calcium for absorption, increased amounts of dietary aluminium may contribute to the reduced skeletal mineralization (osteopenia) observed in preterm infants and infants with growth retardation. In very high doses, aluminium can cause neurotoxicity, and is associated with altered function of the blood–brain barrier.[71] A small percentage of people are allergic to aluminium and experience contact dermatitis, digestive disorders, vomiting or other symptoms upon contact or ingestion of products containing aluminium, such as deodorants or antacids. In those without allergies, aluminium is not as toxic as heavy metals, but there is evidence of some toxicity if it is consumed in excessive amounts.[72] Although the use of aluminium cookware has not been shown to lead to aluminium toxicity in general, excessive consumption of antacids containing aluminium compounds and excessive use of aluminium-containing antiperspirants provide more significant exposure levels. Studies have shown that consumption of acidic foods or liquids with aluminium significantly increases aluminium absorption,[73] and maltol has been shown to increase the accumulation of aluminium in nervous and osseus tissue.[74] Furthermore, aluminium increases estrogen-related gene expression in human breast cancer cells cultured in the laboratory.[75] The estrogen-like effects of these salts have led to their classification as a metalloestrogen.”

Cancer or no cancer, the other side effects are very bad too.

And BHT:
http://www.truthinaging.com/review/what-is-it-bht

Too much controversy around this one for me so I prefer to avoid it. Also, it does accumulate in the fatty tissue of the body. Accumulation is a detail that so many forget. Yes, a tiny dose found in a product that is consumed once is not harmful….but what if it never leaves the body(unless one loses all his fat or something)? Tiny dose over tiny dose everyday will result in a high accumulation.

And of course it can act as an antioxidant(well, it does artificially preserve food, right?) but at what cost? And doesn’t that make is pretty indestructible? That’s another feature that makes it accumulative. One must be seriously dumb or from a dead planet to use this for the purpose of it being an antioxidant considering its side-effects. Vitamina E, C, B17(found in apricot kernels and other seeds), the Q10 coenzime, green tea and goji, especially, are the best natural antioxidants. You’ll never get cancer from this stuff.

“BHA and BHT are fat-soluble which should set off some alarm bells since any compound (good or bad) that is fat soluble will accumulate in the fat stores within the body. If this accumulation persists over time, toxicity results and serious health problems can arise.

Did you mean carcinogenic (meaning can cause cancer), and not “cargerigenic”?
Also, personally I find it hightly unlikely due to the rigorous testing that these products have to go through, that they would have include materials that can cause damage like lead poisoning. And some sources of media *cough The Daily Mail cough* seem to suggest that everything causes cancer from facebook to lesbians, so I wouldn’t necessarily take accusations that seriously (depending on the source and evidence of course).

artemis Avatar

hungry cosmetThat testing that you are talking about allows products with toxic ingredients as long as they’re not over some SUBJECTIVE limit=how much poison can one take without it affecting them right away. ” There is no safe threshold for lead exposure. Any detectible amount of lead is too much lead to be in a lipstick. ”

There isn’t only lead that can be found in the pigments. There are also arsenic, aluminum, cadmium, chromium, manganese and mercury. Purifying the pigments would be far too expensive for these profit-ic companies that would rather invest in false advertising.

Even if cosmetics had no toxic ingredients, so many *FDA approved* cosmetics contain skin irritants like alcohol denat(some Guerlain and Lancome foundations contain this, beside the infamous Garnier BB cream and the spiderweb of all lies, L’oreal’s wrinkle creams-I intentionally said wrinkle instead of anti-wrinkle), menthol, eucalyptus, camphor, menthol, benzyl alcohol, essential oils(made through distillation) and so on.

So this is a list made by the FDA:

http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/ProductandIngredientSafety/ProductInformation/ucm137224.htm#expanalyses

Looks like Guerlain isn’t there because it’s not that popular to have been tested in the first place. Lucky, but if Channel and Dior have it then there’s no question.

” women who apply lipstick two to three times daily can ingest a significant amount—20 percent of the daily amount that’s considered safe in drinking water or more—of aluminum, cadmium, chromium, and manganese. Depending on the lipstick, in some cases women who slathered it on (14 times a day or more) were meeting or surpassing the daily recommended exposure to chromium, aluminum, and manganese. Lead, a metal that humans should avoid exposure to entirely, was detected in 75 percent of the samples.”

Now, the studies:

http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/athome/lead

It is said there regarding lung cancer that “most of these studies were limited in that they didn’t take into account other factors that might affect lung cancer risk, such as smoking and exposure to arsenic.” Well, lol, lipstick has arsenic also. Double threat? Yes. Both of my boyfriend’s grandfathers died from lung cancer, one because he smoked all his life and one because he worked in a mine-it’s so unfair…:(

” We have all accumulated some lead in our bodies over the course of our lives. Lead may accumulate in almost all of our body tissues but only produces visible effects or symptoms when too much lead enters our bodies. The resulting disease is called lead poisoning.

Lead poisoning is normally treatable, though some of the effects can be permanent. Children under the age of 6 and fetuses exposed through lead in their mother’s blood are most susceptible. Lead poisoning has been linked to anemia, central nervous system, kidney and immune system damage and learning disabilities. The degree of damage is dependent on the amount of lead taken into the body over time.” It is accumulative….enough said.

http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/intheworkplace/arsenic

No debate on arsenic.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17718178

No debate on cadmium, either. From what I’ve read, these 2 could be listed as synonims to death.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=chromium-water-cancer

Oh, damn…that one is hard to avoid. Even water is contaminated and nobody does anything about it…I don’t wanna live on this planet anymore!

http://www.examiner.com/article/the-relationship-between-manganese-and-cancer-mortality-rates

Manganese-good for breathing and consumint a lil bit, bad if too much.

Implying that my source is The Daily Fail is an insult, honestly :))

What I can say is that many more things than what we think can cause cancer. Facebook and lesbians…not really.

Facebook can only get you addicted to it and more sedentary but anything related to the computer, tv, phones, etc. can. It’s not good to use the ‘check-in’ thing, though from very different reasons.

About any other danger, I think that almost everything has its side effects…like the fluor in toothpaste.

I don’t think they’re discontinuing Lingerie de Peau, although they are definitely discontinuing Parure Gold. Tenue de Perfection sounds more like a replacement for Parure Extreme, in my opinion, although I’m not sure if they’re discontinuing that one as well.

That is a gorgeous color! I have a number of lipsticks in this color range, but I may just have to give it a try. Thanks for the review!

Lovely 😀 ! Christine thank you so much for reviewing these, I have been searching for swatches and I love how detailed they are, I was so happy to see this Rouge G today. I will buy one of these lipsticks as a gift to myself as soon as they become available in my country, from what I see I will probably buy 862 Madame Reve or Fascine, I have seen 862 being called either of this two names, Madame Batifole is definitely too dark for me, but I’m still very happy with this review.

Kati Avatar

This is just the most gorgeous color. I wish I could afford to spend $50 on lipstick–this is not the first Guerlain or Burberry color that has made my jaw drop.

Ceebee Avatar

I just ran out and bought this at neiman marcus because of your review. And the case! It’s stupid expensive but the packaging makes it so so special. I’m a sucker for brilliant presentation.

ceebee_eebee Avatar

The display at the counter made everything look SO gorgeous. I couldn’t believe how beautiful the collection is. I can’t wait to see your reviews of the rest. 🙂

Jenn Avatar

This is so pretty, but the packaging is too much for me. I want that blush however! Do you know if Nordstrom’s will have it online? Or should I just get it from Neiman’s? I don’t want to miss it.

Gwen Avatar

This is a great colour for you Christine! Would this shade be similar to Rouge D’Armani 402?
I already have Rouge D’Armani 402 but I absolutely prefer the Guerlain Rouge G formula!

Cayla29s Avatar

I really love that color. What stops me from buying Guerlain lipstick is that after it’s done it such a waste of a beautiful packaging. I really wish they would make them refillable.

Terri Avatar

I want a Rouge G and I am going to get one finally, despite all the exhausting details put down below by a very thorough poster. I am not saying I don’t believe you. I just think we all have to go some day and if my destiny is to go out in a blaze of glory covered by G’s lipsticks, I think I can deal with that!
:}

Tori Avatar

This is an amazing colour! And the pattern imprinted on the cover is so pretty. Can’t wait for your reviews of the other two shades. 🙂

I saw this in Sak’s while in New York, and was heartbroken, as it was the end of my trip and I had already spent all of the money in my makeup budget (a.k.a. all of my spending money). I had a gift card for Sephora and picked up Dolce and Gabbana’s Chic Monica (100) lipstick from their Voluptuous Monica line, how do you think the two compare? I was hoping to have found a dupe but now feel that the D&G might be significantly lighter.

Gail Avatar

Hi Christine
Sorry to jump on an old thread but do you think this is similar to MAC Moxie lipstick? It looks similar just a bit more shimmery perhaps? I have spotted my local Guerlain counter still has bits of this collection you see! Thanks…
