5 Shimmering Shades of Pewter
One of my favorite shades in makeup (especially for eyes and nails) is pewter. I love that it’s this mix of gray, gold, silver, and green–it can be such a complex shade.
- Dior Millenium — shimmering, warm-toned pewter in a cream formulation that can be worn sheer or opaque
- MAC Antique Diamond — a metallic golden pewter with soft sparkle in a cream form
- Benefit Skinny Jeans — a classic green-leaning pewter with a golden bronze sheen
- Inglot #454 — a lovely light-medium golden pewter with a frosted, metallic finish
- Urban Decay Addiction — limited edition but still available (so I couldn’t resist), this is a beautiful green-ish, dirty gold for tips
Without a doubt, it’s going to be Benefit Skinny Jeans for me 🙂
Yay!
*Sometimes* I like a pewter shade for eyeshadow – it largely depends on the “green” element of the “mix of gray, gold, silver, and green.” I love gray, I can tolerate a not-too-yellow gold, but greens just do not play well with my [green] eye color.
What I’d dearly love to find is a shimmery mid-tone true (not blue) gray eyeshadow. The closest I’ve come so far is Cargo “Yukon,” which is really more of a taupe shade. MAC “Clue” is pretty close in color, too, but the pigmentation is not the best. 🙁
Have you tried pairing a greener pewter with a plum shadow? Super pretty 🙂 Plum might help counteract the green on green issue!
Pewter is shade that often completely rocks or totally ruins my look, it’s so strange. I find it hard to make this color work. But when it does it’s fab 🙂
What pewters have worked well? Which haven’t?
Skinny jeans is definitely a gorgeous stand alone shadow for a smokey eye look. Mine just dried up I need to go pick up another one.
Oh no – dried up? Hope you had a really long time before that happened!
Oh yeah at least 4 years, I had a good run
I love your “Top 5 Shades” posts. Keep ’em coming!
Thanks, Amber! Any requests?
Love any top five….
Chanel Graphite enamel– thank goodness I scoured the stores to stock up!
Graphite is gorgeous! Totally would have included that if it wasn’t LE!
Love Skinny Jeans! Other favorite is Sephora 12-hour eye pencil in Rooftop Party. A fantastic color for brown eyes!
Another great pick!
I can’t think of any specific pewters off-hand, but I know I do have several. It’s a shade I’m drawn to, and I have several palettes that contain shades in the range, but no singles. With my coloring, and overall style, pewter & taupe work very well for me. I will definitely take this list into consideration, along with siggestions of others, the next time I look for pewters!
There are a lot of LE pewters in palettes that are incredible, so I’m sure you have some goodies in your stash!
I tried to buy Cargo Yukon back in September when I was at ULTA in the US and they were sold out; I nearly had a tantrum right there in the store! My faves would be Skinny Jeans for sure and also UD Mushroom and TheBalm Insane Jane (why they don’t release that as a single is beyond me). I also really love Stila Grace and Cloud though I’m not totally sure either one of them counts as truly “pewter”. I have a sample of MAC Antique Diamond. It is so pretty.
Sounds like I need Cargon Yukon!
I *love* Yukon. One of my favorite shades. 😀 Pulls more grey-taupe than pewter on my coloring, but I love it.
I have repurchased Skinny Jeans several times. My make-up arsenal feels incomplete without it.
Agreed!
A very nice drugstore option is Pewter by Iman. Gorgeous shade.
Thanks for the tip!
I totally forgot about that one! I depotted all of my round single shadows last Summer, and I haven’t pulled out any of the palettes since then. It really is gorgeous, and thanks for the reminder!
I can’t decide on which one I like the most. I have been liking cooler tones this year, which is completely new for me.
What have been your new favorites?
I love Stila’s Diamond Lil, it reflects light just right making it look like you have more than one shadow on for definition.
There use to be this shade by NYX, now discontinnued, named Dune. It was kind on the dark side of pewter but still beatiful though. And affordable.
I’m new to this site and still getting the hang and feel of it. So far I am liking my experience very much. I spend a lot of time on Beautylish, which I love, and am always wishing there were more site out there that catered to all aspects of makeup but with a community feel to it. I don’t mean to ramble. I just saying thanks.
Now to answer the question. My fav pewter is Patina by MAC. I know it’s not a full blown pewter color but when I wet it first this color sings to me like a beautiful love song meant only for me being sung in pewter flat!
Welcome, Travelon!! 🙂 Happy to have you hear. Beautylish is a great community!
I probably shouldn’t mention this as it was LE, but nothing beats MAC Dalliance (mega metal). It’s the perfect shade and the formula is awesome! I wear it so much that I wish I had a backup.
It’s all good when readers share their favorites LEs! I don’t mind 🙂 I just try not to since I consider these like, “Hey, here are some recommendations!” as much as it is “I love these” and OMG, there are a lot of amazing LE pewter shades!
I love Dalliance! I think the Megametal/Peacocky shadows were among MAC’s best. I only wish I’d bought one or two more colours. I almost passed on Dalliance til I swatched it in-store alongside other MAC shadows I thought were similar.
Would someone be so kind as to explain the difference between pewter and taupe? Thanks 🙂
Pewter, to me, is a mix of gold and silver really – and taupe is gray and brown 🙂
