It’s actually hard for me to find a brown shadow I like, but I finally settled on Nars Cordura duo. At first I thought it was too dark (I use as liner and contour), but it’s been great!

Prior to that, I had a Shiseido duo with cream/brown that I used for years until it was discontinued, necessitating the search!

I have so many deep browns it’s hard to say which one is my favorite! My favorite drugstore one would be the crease shade on the right column of Wet n’ Wild Comfort Zone, and high-end one would probably have to be Darkhorse, Snakebite, and Busted (yup I have accumulated a whole bunch of UD eyeshadows now haha)!

I absolutely love NARS Mekong and Coconut Grove, but my absolute favorite (and I’m not sure it technically fits this category) is MAC Smut. I over looked Smut so many times at the MAC counter, but on a whim, I picked it up through the B2M program. It’s everything I wanted UD Busted to be, but more.

::gasp:: how is Nars Mekong not on this list??? lol jk my favorite is Mekong, even though it never looks as beautiful on the eye as it does in the pan. ::sigh::

My favorite dark browns for a contour are Revlon Rich Sable and MAC Embark.

I may need to try some NARS shadows, however, I see that those are well loved!

I second, third & fourth that ! don’t know how NARS Coconut Grove escaped this list  ever since discovered it, my MAC Embark e/s has been neglected

in which case ill fifth that lol. but then again i think coconut grove and mekong share a lot of similarties, base color wise. except one’s matte the other’s shimmery. loving both!!

I absolutely LOVE Smut (MAC). I had never really given it a second look at the MAC counter, as it didn’t look very pretty in the pan. I bought the UD Naked 2 pallette mainly because of the color description for Busted, but it didn’t fulfill my expectation (although I do like the pallette as a whole). Not long after, came across a bag of MAC “empties” and when I went to B2M them, I decided to pick up smut. I figured it was free, so I took a chance with what I thought was just “another” dark brown, as I could always make use of it. I’ve never been so glad to be wrong in my entire life. It is such a beautiful, complex shade-everything I hoped Busted would be, and so much more. The funniest part, I don’t typically buy MAC very often anymore, but I would replace this in a heartbeat.

u’r right. MAC Smut e/s definitely doesn’t get enough love. too discovered it accidentally, & loooove it ! !ut doesn’t it lean more towards grey than brown ?

nubian_queen15 Avatar

Very true. MAC Smut e/s definitely doesn’t get enough love. I too discovered it accidentally, & it has become an almost daily go-to color. But doesn’t it lean more towards grey than brown ?

@nubian_queen15 Actually, on me, I don’t get any gray at all; it actually pulls more plum, if anything, but I do see alot of gray in the pan. Like I said, it’s a complex color.

@xamyx  Thanx 4 the response. That’s so interesting. U’r right. It is complex. I’m a NW 48 in MAC Studio Fix Fluid, & wear Smut as a neutral (go- to) color on my lid, when I don’t know what 2 eye make-up 2 wear, & it looks more grey on me. I’d love 2 know what shade of foundation u wear

@nubian_queen15 I guess in terms of MAC, I would probably be around NC/NW 10, but right now I’m using L’Oreal True Match N1-I am a true neutral. I use Smut as a creas color, usually with Quarry, Shale, or Satin Taupe on the lid. Maybe it’s the lid colors causing it to pull plum? I never thought about it, but now I want to try it with other colors.

@xamyx. I think u’r right about the ‘plumy’ undertones. I’v tried it with a few outer v colors, but it works best on me with sketch as the outer v color. Thanx 4 u’r input
