Tom Ford for Lipstick — Test #3

Tom Ford True Coral Lip Color ($45.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a devilishly bright true coral.  It is as it is named!  It’s a vibrant coral that leans a little orange, but overall, it’s exactly what I envision coral being in its purest form.  Like the other shades I’ve reviewed so far, the color itself is rich and true-to-tube.  Just one layer and you get a very opaque look.  It also wears well throughout the day, giving me around four to five hours of wear and a bit of a lingering stain for another hour or so.

Tom Ford’s Private Blend Lip Color collection are all vanilla scented and come in a white and gold square tube. It’s a very clean and elegant look, and the tube itself is weighty, so it feels more luxurious when you hold it in your hand. I like that the usage of the white paneling means no fingerprints, since that is a common problem when brands use more metallic/metal kind of packaging. The top and bottom are both “gold,” with the top having “Tom Ford” imprinted on it. It does click shut and stay closed well.

The formula itself is creamy and lightweight–it doesn’t feel slippery or nearly as creamy as YSL Rouge Voluptes, nor does it glide on as smoothly and effortlessly as Guerlain Rouge Gs. Tom Ford’s color range is full with twelve different shades ranging from nudes to deep plums. The textures of Tom Ford’s lipsticks are semi-matte–they’re not shimmery at all–and so they have a smidgen of sheen/glisten but overall, a much flatter finish.

The two closest, possible dupes I found were Illamasqua Mistress Intense Lipgloss (different finish) and MAC Vegas Volt Lipstick (lighter, less bright, more orange).

    Pretty color, ugly price.

  3. Kelli says:

I love this color – it’s one of the 3 Tom Ford lipsticks I have. It looks a little more orange on you then me (I have more pigmented lips), but it is def. a very bright color.

  4. LNU says:

On you, its stunning! But not so much for me!

  5. Nikki says:

such a stunning color on you!
i think it’d be too bright on me though
i wish i could splurge on a tom ford lipstick
    maybe soon:]

  6. phuongk says:

  7. Erin says:

    That is GORGEOUS!!!

  8. shakz says:

Wow every single one of these lippys has been awesome, but they are sooooo over priced for what they are. Btw you are totally rockin this shade, lookin amazing!!!!

  9. Tamara says:

    What a rich, gorgeouse color!
It’s so bad that Tom Ford’s lipsticks are so expensive. I’d bought all of them it they weren’t

    • Amber says:

I agree, I love how they have such a long staying power… I am trying to convince myself its worth it! haha :)

  10. Carrie says:

There is no way I will ever spend $45.00 on one lipstick.

    • Q says:

I think the same thing. But then I also remember when there was a time I wouldn’t have spent $20 on lipgloss, either. ^_^

  11. Nazih says:

Wow its so bright! But it looks great on you Christine!

  12. Lady Betty says:

Oh wow, Christine! This color looks so pretty! You wear brights very well!

True Coral looks like MAC Lady Danger and Morange had a super baby! The texture looks so juicy and lush! I have been trying to find a swatch of this shade for a while! Thank you!

I also tried getting this particular shade on Neiman Marcus online yesterday but it, along with Cherry Lush, has been back-ordered until the end of the month. Depsite the steep $45.00 USD pricetag, I guess these Private Blend lippies are super popular!

  13. Bernice says:

    Oooh pretty :D

  14. shontay says:

I love the color, but I don’t love the price. I won’t be buying it. I’ll opt for a similar Chanel shade.

  15. Steph says:

Ugh Christine, you make me want these sooo badly but I will never pay that much for a lipstick! At least I can admire them through your wonderful blog? :P

  16. Ryan says:

I love these lipsticks! I was woundering how does the scent compare to mac? Scent is important to me (?) and I was woundering which you prefer? Thanks!

  17. Alyssa says:

Looks like my grandma’s lipstick. I shudder.

  18. Jenn says:

Too red/orange, imo. I was expecting something more like Chanel’s Genial.

  19. sherri says:

this is off topic but i was looking at the mac website and i noticed a couple of new pigments..neo orange, magenta madness, full force violet…maybe they arent new but its the first time ive seen them and i dont recall seeing them last time i went into a mac store…anyways have you tried any of these, are they available in mac stores???

  20. Marian says:

That’s gorgeous but like everyone else, I wouldn’t spend $45 on a lipstick

  21. HC says:

What are all those spots on the lipstick itself?

  22. Sarah says:

Is this similar to Mac vegas volt in terms of color?

  23. TG says:

Christine, do you happen to know if these contain parabens?

  24. Nancy says:

I purchase True Coral and Ginger Fawn. I love them both. Very long lasting.

  25. Dini says:

Gorgeous color, but the price just isn’t right. I’ve had my eye on MAC Vegas Volt for a while, so I’ll just lie to my lips and tell them it is Tom Ford…

  26. Ludwig says:

I LOVE your eye makeup here Christine!! What are you using to line your lower lashline?

  27. Sam says:

I gotta say it’s pretty pompous and arrogant of someone to price their lipsticks at $45.

  28. kristina says:

The definition of coral! That is stunning.

  29. weng says:

hi cristine….i have guerlain rouge g lipstick in #40(GIL) which is also coral..how is this Tom Ford’s true coral lipstick compare to guerlain’s #40 rouge lipstick?

  30. Janine says:

What is on your eyes?? It’s gorgeous!

  31. Ashley says:

that is incredibly beautiful. I remember when I heard Tom Ford’s lipsticks were $45 I thought, “That’s insane, why would anyone pay that, after all there are Chanels and YSLs for less!” but now, after I see this gorgeous lipstick on you – how smooth it looks, what rich color – I see that this lipstick may be worth the splurge. oh one day, when I’m no longer a student & have a job, I may buy one, thanks to your lovely post :-D

    • Christine says:

I’ll say that when you DO try a lipstick that’s $45-60 — you will notice certain, subtle differences. Whether they make it worth the price increase is up to each individual, but over time, I’ve definitely seen nuances between the different formulas.

  32. Phatsuda says:

    Hello,I just found ur blog
    and I love it !
    U r so WoW
    NIce to meet you

  33. Stef says:

    Oh my! Lusting this lipstick…

  34. Laura says:

very beautiful…I wish they werent so expensive….id love to see if maybe you can do a tom ford DUPE comparison post thanks!!!

  35. Vanessa says:

Loving the color, leaving the price!

  36. nathania says:

This is the one color I’d be willing to shell out $45.

  37. Denise says:

You look so gorgeous with this look Christine!

  38. jessica says:

reminds me of vegas volt by mac

  39. nicci says:

Looks nice and glossy but too bright for me…

  40. Mien says:

    Oooh, that’s gorgeous!

  41. Meta says:

I bought three of theme on Monday; Vanilla Suede, True Coral and Smoke Red. I think I’ll be going back for Pure Pink, Pink Dusk and maybe Cherry Lush next week!

  42. Vi says:

are the tom ford lippies permanent?

  43. lauralikesmakeup says:

This lipstick line looks gorgeous! I’d buy Pink Dusk in a heartbeat if it was $45. :O That’s a Chanel lipstick and a half! Tom Ford is fooling himself if he think his line is going to sell well with that price tag.

  44. Jessica says:

Gorgeous color! I don’t know if it’s the lipstick or what but your teeth are practically glowing white against it! Beautiful!

  45. Jessica says:

Oh forgot to ask do you think this shade is similar to Estee Lauder Spiced Coral or a creamy version of L’oreal Volcanic?

  46. derri says:

    LOVE IT!

  47. Michaela says:

Love it! But I am not sure, if I should get it. I do already have the Dolce & Gabbana Cosmopolitan. Are they different?
