NYX HD Studio Foundation
NYX HD Studio Foundation

NYX HD Studio Foundation

NYX HD Studio Foundation ($15.00 for 1.26 oz.) is described by the brand as a foundation that reflects light to give skin a smoother appearance and reduce the appearance of pores. It also includes “tri-peptides infused to promote collagen generation, reduce wrinkles, and rejuvenate skin.” I’ve only used tihs foundation for a week, so I’m not going to even touch that last part.

The HD Studio Foundation delivers light-medium to almost medium coverage. The consistency is thin overall, but not runny or watery, so it spreads and blends out easily but applies more sheerly. It is a buildable product, so for those who want heavier coverage (up to medium), simply apply more or apply more to the areas where you need it. The foundation dries down quickly and has a velvet matte finish–not ultra matte but not too dewy. I did about twenty lip swatches with this foundation on, and it photographed quite nicely, which is ultimately one of the major marketing points for it.

I’m NC25/NC30 in MAC, 140 in Make Up For Ever, #02/03 in Guerlain, and I found #04 Sand Beige to be a fairly good match. It did have a strong yellow tone, though, so I would only recommend this shade match for those with medium skin tones with warm (yellow) under tones.

I used one pump for my entire face, and for me, my primary concern is evening out my skin–I have some blotchiness in my cheeks and my forehead is a little darker than the rest of my face (always fun to deal with!). At the time of review, I did not have much in the way of major active acne or post-acne marks.

It compares well with Make Up For Ever’s HD Foundation, but NYX’s coverage seems slightly less buildable and ends up being sheerer overlal. There’s a subtle but noticeable chemical-like scent when I used NYX’s but it seemed to dissipate after being applied. NYX’s shade range is inferior to Make Up For Ever’s (8 vs. 25), and it seems like the lightest and darker complexions will have trouble finding a match within the existing range.

I was surprised at how well it wore–it wears nicely for six to eight hours before sheering out (for me, that means on my forehead, which is where I get a little oily by the end of the day). I get a little longer with Make Up For Ever–eight to ten hours–but NYX’s HD Studio Foundation hangs out respectably even past its initial wear period and doesn’t disappear at lightning speed.

NYX HD Studio Foundation Review, Photos, Swatches

It's one of the better budget-friendly foundations I've tried.  I can definitely see myself reaching for it when I'm taking a lot of photos, because it applies easily, has a photo-friendly finish, and works well.  Unlike other products in NYX's HD Studio line, this one fits the price range of the line.  It's cheaper than the HD Grinding Powder by $10!

You’re so gorgeous. You could totally get away without foundation.
Looks like really good stuff for only $15.

  2. Neha

Although the yellow tone is clearly visible but $15 value is worth it and with the Guerlain powder, its looking fabulous. Do you consider Guerlain setting powder above LM setting powder? I have recently got MUFE HD foundation sample, I must get this too. Thanks for the post!

    • I prefer Laura Mercier’s overall, but I do like the Guerlain one – though the Guerlain one isn’t translucent so you have to see if you can fit into their limited shade range!

    • @maandym

I honestly don’t see why the yellow would be a down. I’m very excited and to me, it i a plus that NYX is making stuff for every woman, every undertone. Foundations are never yellow enough for me.

      • If they’re all yellow, however, then those who don’t have yellow undertones are left out – ideally everyone can find a shade that suits them.

  3. Kat

I like the sound of this! Plus it has a pump, which makes my day.
Christine, I know you said that you didn’t have much in the way of post-acne marks and it doesn’t look like you have much in the way of redness, but how do you think it would do to cover those up?
And what did you use to apply it?

  4. Lena

That’s pretty good for the price! But looking at the eight shades, there’s no good match for me. =/

  5. You have amazing skin! I am glad to see NYX put out an HD line. It makes things easier for my wallet. :)

  6. Ana Krum

I’m really sorry to know that NYX is no longer making really pale foundations :/ this HD one seems great!

  7. Jincy

Strong yellow undertone for the win! I think I’ll have to buy this.

  8. Luna

Christine, did you do a review on the Guerlain Les Violettes Mineral Powder?

  9. Vanessa

Lol…I’d stop using it, Christine! Personally, I can’t trust a brand that can’t even have proper spelling on their packaging–they spelled “chlorphenesin” wrong on the ingredients list.

  10. Katie

Your skin is lovely even without the foundation! Does this lean more MAC-like SFF yellow or more neutral? It wears long, but would you recommend it for the really oily-skin type? Thank you.

(Also, It’s strange that you’re NC25-30 like me, but 140 for MUFE HD. I remember swatching MUFE HD shades when I first tried it, and 140 was way too dark. I’m around 120.)

  11. CJ

Your skin looks nearly the same before and after foundation. Lol
I would like to try this when my skin’s good though

  12. Angelcat47

This looks really good for a budget foundation;now if I could only find a budget friendly one for the Halo I’m using now!

  13. Steph

Looks terribly shiny… ugh! I will stick to MUFE HD Mat

  14. Glad to know this is more NYX’s price range.

  15. steph

anyone know how this compares to revlon photoready?

  16. Emily

There’s so many oils in there. Booo

  17. Mimi

Ooo I might try this. Most foundations just aren’t yellow enough for me. D: unfortunately it doesn’t look like this is available in Canada now~ I will wait.

I think it looks great on you, Christine! But your skin looks really good without foundation too.

  18. Chie

I super love this foundation! I alternate this (my shade is 03 Natural) with my Revlon Photoready (my shade is 05). Great results each time! I’m from the Philippines where it’s humid so having liquid foundation last 6 to 8 hours is almost a miracle! The local NYX distributor has not gotten around to selling this so I have to buy from online sellers.

    • Hazel Lyn

Hey Chie! Same here! I have the same shade as Christine here though, 04 Sand Beige. It’s awesome! I have just gotten my hands on the primer though so I don’t know if it will last longer in our humid weather or anything like that. I’ve been using my foundation for a month now alone. I hate stuff that make it obvious that I’m wearing foundation and this stuff works amazingly with me. Before this, on ordinary days, I only used to go with concealer and powder. Now I use this everyday. It evens out all my problem areas and make me look healthy and fresh. I even used it a week ago when I went swimming and it held up nicely even after I dipped myself in the water. I also did not get any breakouts whatsoever with this foundation or I would have stopped using this! (I have oily skin that can get problematic if left alone on its own.) I think I’m going to go buy the first three shades as well just to have other foundation shades that I can mix and match my skin tone wherever it leans on to. It’s summer and summer means swimming and swimming means getting even a little bit of a tan. Hope this foundation works out for the rest of the girls out there! Don’t judge a product if you haven’t even used it!

  19. Oh awesome! I’d heard this was a bit heavy… but if it sheers out a bit coverage wise, then I’m totally sold on it. Thanks so much for this review!

  20. Gabriella

I love the coverage. Although, it appears that shade is too light for you when compared against your decolletage.

  21. Lizz Rokita

i need to try out this foundation 😀

  22. Denise F.

Looking for more yellow tones? The new Sephora liquid foundations are more yellow toned.I recently went for a color match, and had to go lighter than my normal skin tone.I find the new Sephora colors are very yellow. Great review Christine!

  23. Megan

It looks really nice. As far as cheaper foundations I’m still loving Neutrogena. I might have to try this next. It is only a few $ more and if Ulta starts carrying it then with a coupon it’d be around the same price. Not too bad.

  24. Tina

hey christien….i have pores on my face….& if i apply get stuck inside the pores…can u advice me which product should i use to reduce the pores….also advice me which type of foundation should i apply…

    • You can’t really reduce pores – you can use soft focus powders that give the appearance of smaller pores, exfoliate regularly (to help keep them clean), or else use a medium coverage foundation.

  25. Um Saeed

when will you be adding it to the Foundation Matrix please ?

    • The Foundation Matrix is a community-based effort – so we add foundations when people actually submit shade matches. There’s no point to add a foundation with no information there.

  26. Katie

8 shades, do they really think that the world only comes in 8 shades? No thanks, NYX get a larger color range. It’s 2011, WOC want shades too, keep up.

  27. Christina

my goodness you have naturally beautiful skin!

    lucky lady :p

  28. Lo

Thank you Christine! You always do interesting reviews.

  29. Lo

Hello Christine. I use MAC’s NW 20. Would you think any NYX HD shade fits in me? Thank you

  30. @maandym

Do you think any setting powder would do?

  31. Lehua

I’ve seen this recently and i really want to try it, i’m just scared i’ll pick the wrong shade for me.

  32. Bria

Hi Christine, I have sensitive dry skin and I have a lot of post acne blemishes which I do pretty well to cover but I was wondering if you think nyx feels heavy with the coverage or maybe too oily? I feel like the pictures make it look kind of shiny, but that could just be the intense flash? I’m not sure. How natural do you feel this looks and does it work for day? Would you consider MUFE day-wearable? I haven’t tried it but was going to before stumbling upon nyx hd foundation. Any thoughts? Sorry for all the questions. Thank you in advance!

  33. Celia

I was recently matched as 140 in mufe he, would you recommend #04 in this foundation for me?

  34. del

Hi, it looks peachy. does it have any pink in it? or is it yellow based? We have almost similar skin tone. thanks!!

  35. Kris

Doing some Internet research it appears if you’re an nw20 nude, soft beige, or natural may work. Soft beige looked pretty close but I’m leaning toward natural to mix with for summer
