NARS Fall 2010: Tzarine Eyeshadow Duo

NARS Tzarine Eyeshadow Duo ($32.00 for 0.14 oz.) is new and permanent duo for fall that features a shimmering golden-toned champagne and darkened gray with silver sheen. If I had to pick between the two new eyeshadow duos, I would easily choose Rajasthan. The pigmentation and texture is better in the latter duo–Tzarine suffers from a bit of sheerness and less smoothness in the champagne shade, while the gray shade is just a little sheer but overall has the same texture of most NARS eyeshadows.

Admittedly, neither shade seems particularly unique or compelling, which might be why it seems a little dull when released next to Rajasthan. The champagne side reminds me of a lighter version of Alhambra, while the gray side is like a darker version of Underworld.

  • Product: 26/30

RECOMMENDATION: Not as smooth, richly pigmented, or as easy to apply as Rajasthan or the best of NARS eyeshadows–it falls just a little short for me.

i bought this instead of Rajasthan, i guess i prefer the slightly sheerer more luminous colors? I swatched Rajasthan the other day, and I was actually really glad I bought Tsarine instead due to the fact that I KNOW the dark shade in Rajasthan's just gonna look dirty on me. I'm on the lighter side of NC25 tho, so maybe paler girls might prefer this? The light side of Rajasthan was quite lovely however

Nothing wrong with that :) I am NC25 myself but that color is so odd on me, lol.

I'm NC25 too so now I'm confused as to which duo to buy :( But I think I will take Christine's recommendation that Rajasthan is the better of the two, at least quality-wise. With Rajasthan being LE, I think I can wait on Tzarine. Is the light side of Tzarine really that shimmery though? I've been using Burberry Trench a lot as my highlight so I liked that Christine also used it in the look for Rajasthan. I don't think I'll use all of the pretty bright colors but I liked seeing what you can do. I'm starting to wish that NARS had made Tzarine and Rajasthan into a quad or I'm almost sure I will end up buying both!

Yep, it's REALLY shimmery - like frosty!

Pretty in the case. Disappointing as a swatch. I have to agree. Really don't compliment each other and the champagne colour is just too frosty.

Do you know if Rajasthan is also a permanent shade? Or is it LE?

i love the champagne looking one, but not so into the other side. :/

Hi Christine! Why is it the first thing I do when I'm online is to go to this website? :) ... will u be reviewing the brown single e/s from this collection since u used it 4 this look?

Even if they worked well (and you say they don't), I'm not a fan of those colors. They might be good for some, but not for me.

It is an odd mix - really warm, super frosty champagne/beige... and then a very cool gray.

I could tell from online swatches that this duo was not as good in certain ways (pigment, texture, "blendability," and pairing of the colors), so I'm pleased that you agree, Christine. I ordered Rajasthan from NARS and it's on its way, so I'm glad I got it before it sold out. The problem with many duos from Francois is that they are hit-and-miss. I also thought that the blue-gray of Czarine was very similar to the blue-gray of Underworld, which I have, just with a bit more shimmer and maybe a bit darker.

Oh, the Rajasthan came today! It is a perfect dark mallard green with a gray undertone and the beige is lovely. What a hit for NARS! LE, of course.

i had initially liked the look of this more than rajasthan, it's disappointing to hear it's not as good quality:(

Christine, do you know when the NARS fall collection will be in-store in Sephora?

Not sure yet - it should be August.

This is gorge. Do you know is the other duo, Rajasthan is LE or perm?

So you would definitely pick Rajasthan over this one? I know I really want one but it's hard to decide...

Yes. Hands down. Not even a question.

Hummm... This time I think I don't like the colours. As you have said, nothing new. The champange one is as white as it seems in the swatches? Because in the box appears more beige... ¬¬

I don't think these colours particularly compliment each other. if i was doing a smoky eye I'd probably use a white/silvery colour with that grey and use the champagne to lighten brown/ taupe/ gold shadows. but thats just me!
