Make Up For Ever Moulin Rouge
Make Up For Ever #43 Moulin Rouge Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick

Lips That’ll Sing for You!

Make Up For Ever #43 Moulin Rouge Rouge Artist Intense ($19.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a rich, bright orange-based creamy red with a satin smooth finish. There’s a slight sheen but no shimmer or glossiness. The color itself is opaque in one layer, and it holds on and on and on. As such a vibrant shade of red, I get six hours of really good wear and then a slight staining as it fades off for the next two or three hours. Some of the Rouge Artists can be on the drier side (especially the frosts), but this one was particularly creamy and easy to apply.

Mine had no scent whatsoever, but I have heard others say they’ve found them rose-scented. In fact, none of the ten or so Rouge Artist Intenses I’ve tried have any scent!

This color looks so pretty on you

OHMYGOD THAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL RED I HAVE EVER SEEN. pardon the caps. I do like how all the “dupes” are like, 3 times as expensive though :P I was planning on buying Russian Red…. but this…. is….. 10000x better, at least on you :).

  3. Avatar of Victoria Victoria

by the way how does this compare to Russian Red? The swatches you have seem pretty similar

  4. Iliana

Do you think this would look decent on NC37? My lips are pigmented too, but if it’s very opaque I shouldn’t have too many issues with it. How does it compare to Ruby Woo and Russian Red?:)

    • It has a stronger orange-based compared to Ruby Woo and Russian Red (both are blue-based, Ruby Woo being very blue-based!) and less matte. I don’t think it compares to either as close as the dupes I listed in the FAQ!

  5. I purchased this when it was first released. Mine has a very strong floral scent. I love this lipstick!!!

  6. Patty

How does it compare to MAC Heartless?

  7. Avatar of Marian Marian

    That’s my kind of red!

  8. JennIfer

I just bought Heartless, how does this lipstick shade compare?

  9. I have this one and I love it–but it’s funny, I’m very cool-toned (NW15-20) and it definitely pulls neutral/slightly cool on me.

    • Carie

Wow, we have the same name AND the same skintone! Haha, what a coincidence!
This lipstick is really gorgeous, but I tend to shy away from yellow or orange-based red lipstick :/

  10. Arantzazu

I have a very similar colour by Bourjois (it’s a bit old ^^, but I give you the info: collection Dis-moi-oui, colour Rubis, number 28). It’s also an orange-based red.
I like this colour very much! =)

  11. Dia

I can see it’s not blue-based, but it still makes your teeth look blindingly white, Christine! I’m jealous! ;D I love that MUFE printed the name on the lipstick container. It’s a small detail, but I love it!

  12. This looks very cherry red to me! Or like a Candied Apple! :) Pretty!

  13. Bernice

    Hi Christine,

Great review! How does this compare to your fave red lipstick – Chanel’s Dragon?

  14. Parris

It’s so weird that I was looking this up last night and you posted swatches today lol. It’s like you read my mind. I need this asap. I’ve been really into reds lately. Thanks Christine!

  15. JC

It’s not a Limited Edition. It is actually the result of a development request received by Make Up For Ever from Moulin Rouge so the red the dancers wear during the current show in Paris is the #43
It’s a collection and you can also find a Gloss, Strass and one set of false lashes.
This collection will stay in the range for the foreseeable future and is co-branded Moulin Rouge through a franchise agreement.

  16. Janet

OOOOOOH I want this so bad!

  17. i could literally stare at your lips for like, an hour. they are SO gorgeous and picture perfect. i know that sounds weird and creepy but you really have some of the best lips i’ve seen LOL.

ummm ok, i’ll go sit in the corner now while you give me the “wtf side-eye” :D

  18. also, this is a gorgeous color..i definitely see the orange, but i can see tiny traces of blue on your arm swatch near the edges. its beautiful and now i want it. you’re such an enabler!

  19. Thank you for reviewing this! I’d never know how orange it was just going by the swatch on Sephora’s website. I was thinking about getting this one during the friends & family sale, but I’ll pass on it and get some other shades. It looks gorgeous on you but I don’t do well with oranges.

  20. Angel

    Hi Christine-
Did you use a liner with this? If not what would work? Also how would you compare this to Nars Red Lizard? Thanks!!!

    • Hi Angel,

I don’t use lip liner with any lip swatches, so I didn’t use any here. Is there a particular brand of lip liner you’re looking for?

I don’t own NARS Red Lizard, so I can’t compare.

I just bought this a few weeks ago, but haven’t worn it out yet… Mine has a vaguely floral scent to it. The sales woman who sold it to me said that this was designed to be a more “neutral” red that would be flattering to a variety of skin tones so all of the dancers at the Moulin Rouge could wear it… I don’t know how accurate this statement is, but it makes for a romantic story :)

  22. Val

oh…..because of this lipstick, i wish i could wear red!!!!!!!

  23. Cintamani

i’m all for red oranges but it seems to me to be more of a cherry. i will have to try it since i’ve been looking for a cherry red but feel i can’t pull off anything that has blue in it.

  24. Miss Silver

The kind of red that knocks you over. Gorgeous!

  25. Mahera

oh i LOVE the movie; and the lipstick it seems

  26. Avatar of Meredith Mer

This is seriously so beautiful. It isn’t for me but I just love it!

  27. Marina

    Wowza! *has no words*

  28. Ashley

This is gorgeous on you! *Must have*

  29. Vanessa

Woooowwwwww that is a gorgeous bright red lip! I think it’s going on my wish list :)

  30. Daniel

How can I tell if a lipstick is orange, blue or whatever color based? Cause at Ruby Woo I can only see a darker red, no blue base :\ Am I color blind or is it a technique or you had some background information? :) thx xo

  31. Belén

Hi! I’d like to buy a red lipstick but I don’t know which tipe of red is good for me. I’m light to medium skin with yellow undertones (nc20 in winter and nc35 in summer)and I have blonde hair. Which type of red and undertones would be good for me? Thanks!

  32. Little Miss Sunshine

Wow! You look good with any lipstick on! But for me this is too orangey, I have a cooler skin tone. Do you mute out your natural lipcolor with concealer or something else before applying lipstick when you do a review photo?

  33. Eileen

Merry Christmas! Gotta this one for the holidays …

  34. Mandy

Wow, this shade of red is a dream come true for me. It’s not as matte as I like, but still, very beautiful.

  35. Lyn

    omg. GORGEOUS.

  36. Avatar of Heather Heather

This was the first of these new MUFE lipsticks I bought, and I bought it simply because I’m a sucker for Moulin Rouge and red lipsticks. It is FAB. I get a ton of compliments on it. Can’t recommend it highly enough!

  37. Lauren

is it very orange based or just slightly? i’m desperately trying to figure out if i’m more suited for blue based or orange based and this color was recommended on the mufe lipstick shade finder on sepora.com.

  38. Sigourney

It’s funny how everyone says blue-based reds make teeth look whiter, cuz your teeth look super white in these pics. Are you using an awesome toothpaste or is that the effect of the lipstick?

  39. Dee

How does this compare to #42?? I’m using NC35.. Based on ur opinion which one is more suitable for me among #42 or this moulin rouge #43?
