MAC Pigments: Rich Life, Universal Mix

MAC All Ages, All Races, All Sexes Collection: Pigment Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Focusing just on the colors, Rich Life isn’t my cup of tea, mostly because of the glittery texture, but Universal Mix is absolutely lovely. For those concerned about sizes, I just want to let you all know that tomorrow (well, assuming I receive my digital scale today), I’ll be doing another comparison of old jar vs. new jar of the same pigment and will also have a scale on hand.

Pigment ($19.50 U.S. / $23.50 CDN)

  • Rich Life is a deep chocolate brown with a little cool taupe in it and a silver glitter strewn throughout. I found the texture to be a little glittery — it doesn’t feel gritty, but the glitter seems to sit more on the top rather than hunker down into the pigment itself. The texture and feel reminded me of lustre eyeshadows, actually, which I personally don’t like (too much fall out!). I think if you used this wet, you’d have less issues with fall out, but as it dries, you might find some still glitters up your under eye area.
  • Universal Mix is a smooth, frosty gilded white-gold. This is a lovely shade. It’s like a whiter Gold Dusk, a little more shimmer, and smoother. I really liked this one, even when it was all over my carpet, hands, and camera post-comparison.

See photos, swatches, and lip swatches!

Hi Christine! I was wondering what's the difference between white gold pigment and universal mix pigment?

Texture is a big difference, and I'd say Universal Mix is golder!

Rich Life is the color I've been waiting for. :D So excited for it.

would you say that universal mix is very similar to vanilla pigment, it sure swatches like it is? thanks in advance christine for this lovely review and swatches

It's similar, but it has a lot more yellow to it and more shimmer overall!

these 2 pigments were real disappointing...i expected more i guess but when i swatched it and played with it at the store. it was a "skip"

universal mix looks like quick frost pigment to me... which is really pretty and was limited edition. Rish life looks really pretty. I'm glad I can skip the pigments.

How is Universal Mix compared to Solar white in color? I always wanted Solar White, but missed it everytime it came around by itself, and I never wanted the palettes it came in :(

Yellower, more golden, IMO!

yey!! finally!!! great pigments!!!

I went to the store today intending to pick up Universal Mix pigment (2, if it was really that great!) but I was sadly disappointed! I didn't find it very pigmented, just kind of sparsely shimmery. It was also a little too greenish-gold for my taste. I may be the only one to think this and people's reviews may change my mind, but for now, I'm okay skipping this one. I actually picked up Rich Life instead!

Could universal mix be used as a lid color or is it supposed to be more of a highlight?

You can definitely use it on the lid :)

Is the rich life like the browns in the Too Faced duos (thats you've just done a review on) in cocoa puff and honey pot or erotica and silk teddy?

Maybe like Cocoa Puff, but it's a lil' darker.

Christine, how does this (rich life) compare with cocomotion pigment? Thank you

It's darker, browner, more like a chocolate brown and has flecks of gold.

Is Universal Mix similar to Naked pigment ?

Definitely much, much more gold in it.

universal mix is so pretty. i'm still annoyed about the less product/same price thing though...

I went to swatch Universal Mix at the MAC counter and it reminds me of a more gold Quick Frost! Hmmm!!

I am not sure about the Rich Life, just cause there are a lot of brown/ish pigments that Mac has, but I am so getting 2 of the Universal Mixes. I have a feeling they won't last long at all.

How would you think Universal Mix compares to a pigment like Your Ladyship? I am curious!

Golder, not so beige-y.

rich life was quite warm on me :s wish it woulda've been cooler but nice nonetheless

I feel like I need Universal Mix in my life, even with The Great Pigment Debate of 2010 going on. It's so GORGEOUS! What's the texture like and how does it apply?

It's very soft and smooth -- kind of like Vanilla pigment's texture.

I don't really want anything from this collection, but will consider Universal Mix when I see it in person.

Really pretty. I fall in love with pigments more and more each day so I'm pretty certain I'm going to get both of these.

Didn't I say it? Yes, I did! Universal Mix IS really pretty isn't it?! When I first saw it I thought, "Oh look, another frosty white." Then I swatched it and said [insert four-letter word here]. It's so pretty and SO smooth for being so glittery looking. This is gonna rock as a highlighter.

Grrrr...less product...same price. I'm not happy.

LOL, that was supposed to be "universal mix"

Universal Mix reminds me of NARS' Albatross! If I own Vanilla pigment, is this a must have Christine? They seem quite comparable.

It's kind of like Albatross, actually. I'd say Universal Mix is definitely yellower... maybe even finer.

is universal life similar to vanilla?

Somewhat, but I find the texture to be silkier, smoother/finer, and the color to be yellower.

I was wondering if Rich Life is in anyway comparable to Club e/s?

IMO it lacks the green/blue duochrome of Club. If you're looking for a pigment like Club, try Blue Brown or Green Brown.
