I was really little. Probably 8 or 9. I’d watch my mom put on her makeup and I’d try to copy her. I even asked her to buy me those kiddie makeup kits from the toy store. I’d give my friends “makeovers” – I even knew makeup “lingo” from girls’ magazines! “No, no. You have to put blush on the APPLES of your cheeks!” LOL!

i fell in love with lipstick when i was about 5, i remember trying to take my older sisters bright pink lipstick all the time. but i didnt really start to love all makeup until about 15

lol – me too! weird thing is, i’ve always been a real tomboy, but i looove make up – guess sometimes i look a little, err, strange when i wear some real dramatic eye and just plain old jeans and t-shirt with it… doesn’t happen that often anymore (too lazy for dramatic make up), but in my late teens, it was my daily look…

November 2008. I did wear foundation and blush before that… but I wasn’t really *into* makeup the way I am now and had never worn any eye makeup (well, a Clinique GWP shadow my mom had that gave me a stye LOL) before or lipstick. I don’t even remember why I suddenly decided to go to MAC and buy my first cremesheen but it was then I fell head over heels. It also definitely helped that I’d been working on my skincare routine for about two years then and had finally really sorted that out. I think, as a hobby, makeup is much more fulfilling for me than anything else I do because for the most part I don’t have to worry about pleasing anyone or what anyone says or thinks. It’s more fun and more relaxing.

And just like you, I knew because every free moment I had I was researching products, trying to figure out how I could wear eyeshadow, what mascara wouldn’t smudge on me, etc, and basically everything I wanted to spend money on (that wasn’t groceries and rent) was makeup! LOL.

I was about 11 years old when I REALLY fell in love. (I started to fall in love when I was 6 and my mom put false lashes and a red lip on me for Halloween.) A friend of mine, who was 14 at the time, was wearing super bright makeup that I LOVED. So I begged my mom to let me wear makeup. (Though now I realize her makeup was absolutely awful and made her look like a crazed horror movie clown.) My mom gave me some cheap eyeliner and a little neutral eyeshadow palette, and I haven’t stepped out of the house without my face on since then.

21 when I was young I was a tomboy and didnt really care about makeup or dresses i have three brothers and they still make fun of me for falling in love with makeup last year! I am totally obsessed with makeup and I love being in touch with my femininity 🙂

Hmm..I was introduced when I was 15 but the feeling I had towards make-up was like an off and on relationship till like I turned 17. My aunt introduced to MAC and got my first quad of eyeshadows (DaBling, Steamy, Dazzlelight, and Hepcat <3).

When I was 17, I had Grad photos, Friendship photos and prom to get ready for.

My mom brought me to Chanel to get my makeup done. Suddenly I got an excuse to get Chanel (my mom paid for those items because y'know it was my final year of high school and its expensive but she loves Chanel makeup XD). After seeing myself after my Chanel makeup was done, and using those products + YouTube videos, I just fell in love with makeup permanently.

It's been a little more than a year now (not long). 😛

I started wearing it when I was 17 and wanted to get a boy’s attention, but really fell in love with it when I was 18 after my mom passed away and I got all her makeup. That was also when I discovered your blog and learned how to apply it like a pro 🙂

I was even able to write a really great essay for a writing class about it’s significance! Got an A, hehe.

When I was 14, I went to Florida, I’d herd about MAC before, but in England it’s really expensive, and I’d had a little bit of make-up from Lancome and Chanel when my auntie worked there, but when we went to Florida, I bought my first MAC shadows and it just went on from there!

Amy Avatar

Not until I was about 23 and started having cystic acne. I checked out YouTube to get tips on concealing blemishes and discovered all the tutorials. Those gave me some confidence to try something besides taupe eyeshadow and brown mascara – so I headed to MAC and had someone help me pick out some fun eyeshadows!

Like many girls I played dress up and did the whole makeup bit as a child. But I can’t say I fell in love with it until almost my 25th birthday and it’s been only a little over a year since I’ve been a totally makeup junkie. Just tonight I played with a pink glitter look which ended up not drying and getting too much glitter in my eye, but I didn’t panic, just cleaned it off and flushed it out and then tried again on the other eye :).

i was really interested in makeup during junior year in highschool but the craving slowly died out … that is until i discover youtube and sites like this back in april 09! now i cannot stop! =)

I always loved makeup from as far back as I can remember! My earliest memory of my love for makeup was from about 7 years old. We had this really big bathroom with double sinks and a mirror that went from end to end of the room. I used to get up on the counter and sit indian style *IN* the sink in front of the mirror with my mom’s eyeshadow and lipstick and apply it, admire the colors, then rub it off with a towel and do it all over again! I would this over and over for hours – I literally would rub my skin raw with the towel! LOL! I fought with my mom to allow me to wear makeup outside the our home from the time I was 8, but she wouldn’t let me wear it to school until I was 13. On my 13th Birthday I remember my Dad took me to K-Mart and bought me my *own* makeup – I don’t remember what all I got, but I do remember a Cover Girl Blush he bought me. It was a blush duo compact – I even remember the colors. LOL!

Leigh Avatar

Haha! Sounds just like me! My 13th birthday present was a little vanity- mirror, drawers, it even had my name on it! And I got a whole bunch of makeup, mostly from the drugstore. It was like a right of passage!

bubbles Avatar

I started when I was 24. Stila had a faced-out sales in my country, where everything was 50% to 70% off. I bought many stuffs, just because they were cheap. Since then makeup is the only thing that I wana spend my money on (just like you) 😀

Liz Avatar

When I was 17 I think, i really started building my collection and working with makeup.

My aunts had always been into makeup and used me as their ‘guinea pig’ ha, so I learned how to apply really young. I’d say 8th grade was the year I started wearing makeup regularly. From then on out friends and girls at school would always ask me to do their makeup for dances and stuff so I did.

Now i’m 20 and get paid for it, haha, so that worked out.

Liz Avatar

Also, you should know how unbelievably helpful and well organized this site is. Really, it’s a wonderful resource for knowing what’s up and my go to for all things beauty.

When I was about 15, I saw an old xsparkage vid on youtube, I believe it was her Tropical Eyes one; blue, green and yellow and I just LOVED it! So I went to MAC and bought Electric Eel, Bitter and Chrome Yellow, and my love of makeup just spiralled from there 🙂

Jazz Avatar

i always wore foundation, lipgloss, liquid liner & mascara except i wasnt good at finding the right foundation or concealer same goes for the eyeshadow i was a newbie didnt even know we had blending brushes i finally opened my eyes when i was 20 and got a few decent brushes and went from crap to pro in a couple of months time

K / bihadadiaries Avatar

I was 15. I got contacts, and I decided the only way to make my now bare eyes stand out was to start plucking my eyebrows and to wear mascara. It started with mascara + gloss, then eyeshadows… and once I started working (and having enough money!) I got into everything else!

Nicci Avatar

I was late…I wore very little in high school and college. I bought all drugstore brands I believe. I didn’t pay attention to any collections coming out or know of the high end brands. I just started getting into it last year when I was 25, thanks to a co-worker who is very much into makeup and skin care products 🙂 She got me into the high end brands! Sometimes I wish she did not introduce me to them… 🙂

Sarah Avatar

My mom knew a lot of people in the entertainment/art industry, I learned a lot from her knowledge and I love it so when I was 14 (1998), I fell in love with MAC because my friend kept dragging me to the counters, the two combined, and I was hooked lol

Fee-ona Avatar

As some of the posters above, I was also a tomboy in my teenage years, wore a little eyeshadow and eyeliner but that’s about it.

I’m 25 now and only in the last few months have I ‘really’ been getting into make-up, learning how to apply etc. I enjoy mixing and matching eyeshadows and love applying eyemakeup, so many things you can do!

I have to confess that at first the world of make-up was very confusing! This brush for that, apply this before that etc. I think I’ve gotten to grips with it now and I love it!

Az Avatar

I think many of us loved playing with mom’s cosmetics when we were kids. And wanted to look good during high school. But to fall in love with makeup seriously/become a makeup junkie/… it’s when I was 18.

MeganA Avatar

When I was a teen I was in love with sparkly eye shadow and pale lips, this was when I first feel in love with makeup. I then had an affair with the high end makeup (as in shopping spree at Sephora) when I was getting married. Since then I have left the drugstore behind and moved on to a whole new world of vibrant colors, smooth finishes, and never having to worry if I really need it ( I really dont need the new mac lines but hey, its a little different then what I have now, at least thats what I keep telling myself).

Annie Avatar

I took my first trip to Sephora when I was 12 or 13 and thought I was the coolest girl because I bought an Urban Decay eyeshadow and a Smashbox lipgloss. All the girls liked the Smashbox lipgloss because they used to use it on “How Do I Look”. This was when I truly started to like makeup.

I bought my first MAC foundation at 15 and fell in love ever since then. I didn’t really experiment with eye makeup until I wanted to try a smokey eye and stumbled across your blog. I went to MAC the day after to buy everything that you used and fell in love with eyeshadows. Thank you for helping me find a new passion! (:

just about 2-3 months ago. i usually avoided makeup because i have huge-@ssed pores and i’m crazy oily.

i’m still crazy oily and my pores are still HUGE but there’s a ton of products now to kinda help out in those areas. blotting paper + blot powder is key.

also i realized i have an insane love for eye makeup. i’ve been stocking up on mac eyeshadows the past several months, wow. not cheap but i can’t seem to help myself. =P

Charlene Avatar

When I was 5 I used to play with my grandmothers make up and fell in love with it ever since and couldnt WAIT until I was allowed to wear it. Which was 15 but I used to sneak it on since I was 12. LOL Now I am COMPLETELY addicted.

resham Avatar

I started using make-up when I was 18, but occassionally on parties and functions. I didn’t had too much stuff. After couple of years…I dunno what to do wth crap load of stuff I have…lol!!!

Just about 5 months ago while recovering from surgery.

I was addicted to longboarding for two years before that, then I got into a major accident that sent me to the ICU for two weeks. Spent a lot of time at home recovering and had to amuse myself. Was actually watching videos on Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick and found a tutorial by Pixiwoo on how to do a Edie inspired look. They make up so interesting and from then on i got hooked 🙂

leinti nti Avatar

i agree with alyssa mae. i started putting on make up at 15 ( my first lipstick was a lovely bourjois shade) and then, at 20-21 I bought rimmel eyeshadows from the local pharmacy. but I fell in love later on when I was able to spend money on more high end products.

Danya Avatar

When I was little 7..8 I used to watch my mother put it on herself. I used to then sneak into her room and try her lipsticks out lol..sometimes I would get in trouble cause I used to break the lipstick..

53 Avatar

I was 5 and I would wear my mum’s bright red lipstick every night and pout in front of the mirror. Then, I’ll play with her eyeshadow palletes (she only had 1 trio : blue, purple/burgundy, gold). I would do a look on myself and thought i was beautiful but actually i looked quite scary (blue on brow, purple on lids and then red lips *pouts* haha!)

53 Avatar

oh, i forgot to say that, after i entered school at 7 years I forgot about make up completely and only started to slowly wear make up again bit by bit starting 17 with eyeliner and then powder to cover my dark circles and then a fully powdered face after a makeup reaction gave me adult acne. and by 21 I already have everything to do a full makeup on my face.

Samantha Avatar

when i was 15 or 16. same deal with me too, i wanted to buy everything. i was addicted to mac pigments, i used to only buy the pigments. i applied them to my eye with my pointer finger and blended with my ring finger. i only used one color, rarely did i use mascara and never eyeliner except black on the waterline. of course no eyeshadow base so creasing and fallout galore! it was a tragic look LOL.

Anitacska Avatar

I was very little, maybe 5 or 6, I loved to try on my mum’s lipstick (it was a beautiful golden brown colour – she never used it btw). I bought her a gorgeous green eyeshadow duo for her for Christmas when I was about 10, but she complained that she wanted blue as she has blue eyes, and never used that either. *sigh* Anyway, I’ve always loved make up and started wearing it when I was in my teens (14 or so).

lazeny Avatar

That’s when I started playing w/ my mom’s lipstick. The cleverness of the lipstick tube and the beautiful colors – in my naive year old mind was really fascinating. And my mom was indulgent because she’s letting me play w/ them even though at that time her cosmetics was expensive.

debchik Avatar

I discovered my mom’s makeup at a very young age, she didn’t wear that much but I was drawn to it. In my early teen years, I had horrible acne, so I spent most of my time worrying about skin care and cover-up. In my mid twenties, my skin improved and I discovered color. So I guess I’m all over the board on this one!

dolce aria Avatar

Was attracted to it as a child, but my mom was militantly anti-makeup, and always shamed me for wearing it for anything other than dance performances or special occasions. So I didn’t really grow into that attraction until 18, when I began modeling, and didn’t begin truly developing skills, or discovering better brands, until I was 19.

Siledhel Avatar

Truth?… When I ran into your page after looking for a smoky eyes tutorial (lol)
I mean I always “liked” makeup but last year it just became an obsesion

amy Avatar

I was 10, but it wasn’t the last year or 2 that I started to experiment more with looks and more brands. I used to be a true blue MAC girl but now I love anything from high end to cult brands. I would love to try more cult/indie brands.

Megan Avatar

When I was 20 and I got contacts but I got into it more when I was 22 and its just taken off from there. I love it.I haven’t bought any in a month but I will fix that next week and I can’t wait:p

I really started to get into makeup this past November 2009, right before Thanksgiving. My roommate introduced me to MAC with the tinted moisturizer and there has been no looking back. I’ve grow a pretty good collection so far 😛
I had always wanted to use makeup but pretty much everything drugstore would dry me out if I tried to use it regularly (darn eczema). After trying out MAC I’ve really figured out what to look for!

Sarah T Avatar

I remember exactly 😛 It was 2008 (I was 20) and I had watch Lauren Luke’s Bleeding Love video – I was all ‘huh? MAC? what’s this?’ and had to go find out about all these cool things (eyeshadow bases, and other things I never knew existed, LOL)

Jackie Avatar

summer of last year (age 25).. i never got into it when i was younger cuz i didn’t know how to do it and had zero friends to help me… but thanks to you and other people on youtube, i fell in love

I’ve always loved makeup, but I really fell in love after I broke up with my bf in 2008 ( is this crazy? I want to know your thoughts…), the exact same time I discovered your blog. I’m not sure why then but I went in full force, and became obsessed with wanting to make everyone pretty ( I got my colleague to start wearing make up, he he) I have the basics down, but I’m still learning 🙂

Jaqueline Avatar

I only fell in love with make up last year and it was really by accident. My sister in law was out with me one day and I commented on how lovely her make up was and she told me about youtube, and youtube introduced me to Temptalia and MAC and the rest they say is history.

Now I never shop for clothes or shoes, its always make up.

I wondered what the beige thing was in the bottle and my friend said it was foundation, something that hides your pimples….I tried it and it hid my acne a little bit and my freckles…I WAS HOOKED !!

In the womb 🙂 When I was 2, my then 16 yr old aunt would do my makeup and then let me do hers. She let me scribble all over her face with pleasure.

I started to obsess over it maybe my senior year of high school, but started to learn techniques my second year of college (which is this year!). YIKES. Makeup was a love and hate thing. I would spend a lot on it.. then stop. Then something triggers my makeup obsession and from now on, I don’t think i’ll have anymore dry spells!

i grew up with a lot of sisters and i was always the tomboy and we would have make-over sessions all the time and i was always the test dummy for make-overs i then became ubsessed with doing make up and till this day we all get together and i bring my big stash of make up and just do each others make up and nails.

on my 18th birthday i made my first mac purchase for hello kitty collection and ever since, make up is all i really splurge on these days ! and thanks to youtube and temptalia, i have learned so much

I’d have to say that my love affair with makeup started gradually, but early. At 13 years old I was reading Seventeen Magazine and dreaming about all those amazing Bonne Bell and Jane Makeup Products. I remember having an Elizabeth Arden lipstick (The Amber Shade, made for Amber Valetta) and wearing it at my cousin’s wedding, again at age 13. By the time I was in high school, I had quite a collection, mostly drugstore brands, but I still had quite a bit of products. In 2001, I bought my first Allure magazine, I was 15, and from then on I was hooked. I honed my makeup skills to perfection with their How-To tear out guides. I also bought my first MAC lipstick, Lame, which is still my favorite color to this day. Shortly there after, I purchased the cult classic lipliner, in Spice, and from then on was hooked. I’ve bought from many brands, Sephora is like heaven on earth to me, and its just blossomed from there.

In all honesty, it all goes back to a photo I found recently. I’m 3, and I took my mother’s eyeshadow and have layered color over color onto my eyebrows and brow bone. See that made me laugh, but also made me realize, maybe some things you are just born loving. Makeup is one of them.

I became a makeup fanatic just this last year. I am 22 and have been in love with Hello Kitty my whole life. My brother pointed out to me the new Hello Kitty MAC line and I was hooked! I went on a makeup binge all of last year and continue to keep an eye out for new stuff. It seems like all of a sudden I opened my eyes and stumbled across this magical makeup world. I am slowly recovering from my 2009 makeup addiction but it was all worth it!

Probably when I was about 12/early teens. Initially I wasn’t allowed to wear too much so a lot of us didn’t put it on until we got to school and then wiped it off (or most of it) before we went home.
