Urban Decay Naked Smoky.
It’s perfect for me. It has the essential mattes for me (all over lid, transition, dark brown and greyish), the 3 brown shimmers, a dark almost black, a dark purple, a smoky blue that looks great on my brown eyes (never thought blue eyeshadow will work for me). I never use the silver one… but the rest are just everything I need.

Despite my love of palettes, I have been using loose shadows more lately! I generally reach for Urban Decay’s Naked2Basics for the base of my look, though, then add an accent color for everyday. When I’m not using loose shadows, I simply reach for the nearest one, which happens to be a VDL Pantone palette (6.4 #5) from last year. Christine steered me away from the Sephora/Pantone palette, and I was buying a lot of Korean skin care, so I picked that one up, too.

I have several go- tos: Lime Crime Venus 1 and 2, Juvia’s Nubian2 and Masquerade, Coloured Raine Queen of Hearts palette, UD Electric and Spectrum from 2015, Anastasia’s Modern Renaissance. I’m into color, as you can see.

Erica Avatar

My two self made MAC double sided palettes. It has all my depotted MAC shadows and a few of the $6 pans. It is all I need and I use it daily

Very, very few palettes have shades that I really like to use on myself for base, subtle brow highlight, and crease/hood/transition colors (basically my in- and above-the-crease work when I’m doing a look more complicated than a smoky eye), so I have a Z-palette with shades I like to use just for that, which I pull out along with almost every other palette that I ever use. Kjaer Weis shadows have just the right slightly satiny finish for work in and above my crease (I have Cloud Nine, Grace, Wisdom, Divine, Onyx, Green Depth, Pretty Purple, and Blue Wonder, and I’m considering Charmed and Angelic). Many Make Up for Ever satins are also work well, so I don’t need to pull out my “crease-and-above” Z-pallete when I use my MUFE shadows. I can get away with not using it with NARS shadows, too, but I use it with most other looks.

Actually, none. Well, to answer your question, I was using UD Naked Smokey and it was just ok. I’m done with palettes. I started looking for eyeshadow singles again and I just received my Gucci Mono eyeshadow in Cocoa. Prettiest shimmery brown EVER lol. I’m about to order Anthracite. I just can no longer justify spending money on palettes and I end up using one or two shadows out of them. It’s a huge waste and takes up too much space, plus I find the quality of eyeshadow singles much better. Gucci is very buttery and blends beautifully. 🙂 I will definitely be buying more shades. 🙂

Genevieve Avatar

I agree with you there – you do only end up using 3-6 shades in a palette. I have Vice 2 – but it has 3 blacks (why?) and 3 pinks, which I don’t use at all.
Those Gucci singles are HEAVENLY – love the shade range. Cocoa looks beautiful, so does Mosaic and their antique gold.

Agona Avatar

I won’t buy a palette unless I can use all the shades. …although, I end up with more quads/trios than I do palettes with this method. I probably only own 2 bigger than an 8-pan, and they’re both neutrals.

I don’t know if this counts, but iv been using a custom made pallet everyday!!

I took my 4 pan colourpop pallet, and I took the foam insert out! And bam! A nice portable magnetic bottom pallet :-).

I prefer custom pallets because Im very picky with my hooded eyes!

(I have a mix of 1 sephora brand shadows, 4 colourpop shadows, 1 mac shadow, 1 coastal scents shadow, and 3 mini MUFE artist shadows!)

Heather Avatar

I’m w/ you on the hooded eyes! If I buy a palette it HAS to have more mattes than shimmers. I feel, the more mattes I have, the more looks I can create. I can get one or two shimmery shades (like a couple foiled mug shadows) to throw on my lid & inner corner, or just use whatever highlight I’m using that day.

Heather Avatar

Omg, speaking of matte palettes, I just recently came across (it’s not new but I’d never seen it before) the most beautiful Zoeva Matte eyeshadow palette. The colors are stunning. I’ve never used a Zoeva palette before so idk how they perform, but I really want this one. And I think it was only like 22-$24.

Becca Avatar

ABH Modern Renaissance. It’s perfect! For a day to day look I just use Raw Sienna in the crease and Primavera or Vermeer all over the lid. There are so many options for looks I really don’t need to reach for anything else. Love this palette so much!

1. Viseart Bridal Satin
2. One from MAC I selected myself with Dazzlelight, Sumptous Olive, Satin Taupe and Fig.1
Runners up:
UD Naked Basics
Tarte Tartelette Tease
MAC Macnificent Me
And..
I would put Viseart Petit Pro if Sephora would get it back in stock so I could order it.
My goal this year is to acquire most of the Viseart palettes ?
How I wish their Cool Mattes had been a better formula, Warm Mattes is not for me. Christine have you reviewed the shadows in the Viseart Palette with the brow creams?

Nancy Avatar

Hi Linda, NancyC here. You were kind enough to give me some details and encouragement regarding the cool mattes a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to thank you for your input. This palette is definitely on my wishlist now! ?

Mariella Avatar

Same here! I even asked to be notified when it restocks. I had to do the same with the Cashmere Colour Theory palette and it restocked just in time for my kids to get it for me for Mothers Day last year. I wonder if the Petite Pro will take just as long!

xamyx Avatar

My eyes & lids have been sooo dry for the last 6-8 weeks, so I haven’t been wearing eye products. The last palette I played with was the tarte-ist PRO palette for a couple of weeks; before that, it was L’Oreal Nude 1&2 with CoverGirl Roses & Nudes.

Alison Avatar

I’ve been alternating between the Denona Blue Purple for cool looks and the Anastasia Modern Renaissance for warm looks and every so often experiment with the Viseart Dark Mattes. I use the three light mattes from the Suva Neutral palette as a base for the Denona and the Dark Mattes. And I sometimes use the Suva dark browns and black eyeshadows wet as liners. Used over a white shadow, I can pull some blue, purple, and teal looks out of the Denona that are similar to the KVD Pastel Goth. Getting good use out of a pricey palette with some good colors.

Anna Avatar

Frankly speaking I do not use large palettes that often. I have realized I get anxious when I face all the choices so for everyday, getting ready for work, I use e/s duos or a cream e/s all over lid. I pull out my palettes on weekends and then, I try to rotate and don’t have a favourite.
I do like CT sophisticate – it works for both workdays and weekends! I use it for a cery beutral eye to pair with a very bright warm lip.

Agona Avatar

I’m the same; large palettes overwhelm me. Except I use trios/quads (or 6/8-pans that can easily be broken into trio/quad color combos).

Freddi Avatar

Right now I have 2: Too Faced Sweet Peach and Modern Renaissance from ABH. I love them both! I usually use one or the other or sometimes both together! It literally has everything I need. I can go from a minimal to dramatic look. Highly recommend them both!

Bonnie Avatar

Lately, I’ve been working my way through trying all the colors in this super cheap LA Colors palette that I got for 5 bucks on a Walgreens after-Xmas markdown. There are 100 shades in there, and since I like to do 2 at a time, it’s gonna take 50 days to try them all.

I also have been into my KVD Pastel Goth and Alchemist palettes (does it count as a palette if it’s 4 colors?)

Lesley Avatar

I’ve been using my UD Gen Stefani palette a lot. I can get some great office looks with a few pops of color. It is a workhorse for me.

Heather Avatar

I recently (w/in the past couple months) got both the Modern Renaissance palette & the MUG MannyMUA palette. And although I love both of them, for some reason I reach for my Manny palette more. But both are my go-tips for sure.

Vanessa Avatar

I’ve been in a real makeup rut lately and haven’t been switching out my makeup like I usually do and for the last 3 months or so I’ve been using my smash box full exposure palette. It’s quick and easy in the mornings!

Trish Avatar

I would say either UD Naked3 or smoky one! A lot of times I like using their single shadows. Have been using the brand consistently for 10+ yrs.

Karen J. Avatar

If go-to means what I grab and use when time is short (but not short enough to skip eyeshadow entirely) and I just need to get something on my eyes then the Viseart Neutral Mattes palette, I just can’t go wrong with it!
If go-to means what I’ve been gravitating toward more than any other palette in the past few weeks, then I’d have to say the Marc Jacobs About Last Night palette. I got it during the last Rouge sale and ignored until a few weeks ago. I’ve found that I enjoy the formula and also like playing with the shades and finishes. I’ve been able to get multiple cool as well as warm and neutral looks. There was some buyers remorse at first but since I’ve been using it I’m very glad that I bought this palette.

Samantha Avatar

ABH Modern Renaissance. Believe it or not, I just bought it. I also have used Too Faced/KVD Better Together and Marc Jacobs About Last Night Eye Con No20 a lot lately.

VAL MARTIN Avatar

At the moment I have my Smashbox Full Exposure palette in a Project Pan with the intention of finishing the two shadows that I have hit pan in, I do love the Naked 1 and 2 palettes too.

Tamara Avatar

Tarte Rainforest Of The Sea ll. I love this palette! The dark blue shade, Riptide is really flattering as an accent on my blue eyes. It’s a shade I normally avoid in palettes. Anyway, I’m going to try to start rotating some of these palettes more often.

Agona Avatar

Shiseido’s trio in Snow Shadow. It’s only a trio but it’s my go-to for a no-brainer smoky eye look (my favorite eye look), and it has a blue-undertone.

Caroline Avatar

Urban Decay Naked2…. this has been my “go-to” for a good, long while. I love this so much, because its a cinch to forma a simple look, but also a more dressed-up look!

Silvia Avatar

Natural and Nude WetnWild! Recently found a rose and golden from a brand I know nothing off Bisou at Marshall’s or TJ Max and loving it! Very satiny soft the colors are beautiful and last.
