What's the best beauty secret you were told?
What’s the best beauty secret you were told? Who passed it on to you?
Beauty comes from the inside, which is something my mom told me over and over again. Â I think it can be easy to get lost in cosmetics, makeup, etc. and lose sight of our real beauty, so it’s a helpful reminder.
Thanks to Emily for today’s question!
Either that there is such a thing as eyeshadow primer (you mean eyeshadow is supposed to last longer than an hour?!) OR that you should use a tiny stiff brush to clean up the edge of your nails.
I would have to agree with that! I hear all the time that that statement is the “ugly duckling” sentiment only, though. It doesn’t matter how physically beautiful person someone is if they are ugly on the inside.

Hey what happened to the new comment system ??
As we used the system, there were some deal-breakers within the dashboard – no bulk approval (we have contests that get 1,000 to 5,000 comments in 24 hours, and manually clicking “approve” one by one is painful, but even on other posts, there may be 20-40 responses when I go to approve, and I can read through quickly and approve all at once, rather than one-by-one) and no reply ability within the dashboard (so it forces me to approve the comment, go to the post with the comment, find the comment, and reply, which slows down the reply process by adding an additional 1-2 minutes per comment, which adds up to about 100 additional minutes per day at least!).
I sent my feedback back to Livefyre and hope to see them roll out those capabilities in the future. They have some amazing features that we loved, but there were some issues that made it so much less efficient on me, and I don’t have enough time as is to get everything done, so something that significantly makes the commenting process longer isn’t going to work for us.
If it means anything, I like this comment system, and I wasn’t feeling the other. I feel like this one is easier to read, and is just overall more basic, but I guess I don’t like change. LOL.
I just want to take a moment to say how amazing it is that with all the comments you get, you reply to every single one! I have never seen ANY blogger/YT guru on your level come even close. You set the bar so high for beauty bloggers.
🙂
Jess
Thank you! 🙂
I totally agree! In addition to that, the reason she is my favorite beauty blogger is because she has done this for SO long and remains level headed. Her ego didn’t get all big, and she doesn’t claim to be this professional makeup artist with all the knowledge like some bloggers/gurus have turned.
Thank you!
wear what you want but stay appropriate. my dad. my mom rarely gives me beauty advice. she just does her thing and i do mine =P my dad’s advice was never specifically about makeup or anything but more about what i wear in general and to stay with in the guidelines of what I’m doing that day and were I’m going at what time of day. also to remember how old I am and to stay modest.
Wear sunscreen every day. Ive been wearing it since I was 14. Im turning 40 now without a wrinkle. 🙂
VERY good beauty and health advice! I wish I hadn’t been so set on tanning and skipping on the SPF in the past.
Such a great piece of advice!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Corny, but true. I like the way Tyra Banks put it: “The interesting thing about beauty is, it’s debatable”. The more experience I get as a makeup artist, the more I agree with this. For every person who finds you unattractive, there will be someone who finds you attractive.
And my own beauty secret: everyone can benefit from eyeliner. I have yet to meet someone who couldn’t wear it.
To not have an over-complicated skincare routine when your skin is being difficult. I suffered with acne as a teenager and I went through a phase of trying out loads of different things. All it did was make my skin worse and it calmed down a lot when someone told me to stick to basic products
The only thing my mom ever told me about makeup was that it should be used to enhance your natural beauty and should always look natural. The best makeup is makeup that people can’t tell that you’re wearing.
Beauty is an indicator of health–whether it be physical, emotional, and/ or mental. Being beautiful is taking care of yourself. =)
i was told that drinking a lot of water and eating healthy does a lot for your skin. of course you also have to moistruize and use spf etc..
but living a healthy lifestyle is as important as using the right products!
smoking gives your skin a grey tint after a while of beeing addicted!
i try to give my skin a break from make up whenever i can! if you stay at home all day anyway…
Well, as a smoker, *and* as someone who knows several smokers, I can tell you that a grey tint to your skin is just not true, and that smoking causes wrinkles is a myth, as well. At 38, I have not one wrinkle on my face, besides 2 horizontal lines across my forehead that I’ve had since I was a child (caused by stress) and they have not become any worse since I began smoking. I believe that general neglect of your skin is the biggest culprit of skin woes, as well as too much sun exposure. I have friends who are long-time smokers who have beautiful skin, and it seems the ones with the worst skin are non-smokers who like to tan. The best beauty tip I ever got was SPF, and to not rely on what is allegedly in foundation. I read it in a few magazines.
How to draw my outer v on first then blend!
You’re better off wearing a clear lip gloss than a lipstick in a shade that doesn’t suit you!
After i told my Late aunt how i wear makeup to hide my imperfections, i.e acne scars, uneven skin, she told me to always remember, no amount of makeup can hide an ugly soul. Ihats one of the sayings i stand by in my life.
I really like your beauty secret, Christine~!! It’s very sweet. ^^ On a more shallow note, the best beauty secret I have heard was actually from a Youtube guru named MakeupByAlli. She said to place three fingers on the apples of your cheeks, then place your blush on the left over cheekbone. That trick really does help lift your face up~!! I have a very small face so I use two fingers, but it still works. 🙂
Work with the features that you have, not the features you wish that you have. It seems simple, but I’ve done a fearless facial inventory for years – assessing what can be used each day to make myself look my best – and I usually get compliments on how I look. Once you get the hang of it, it’s easy.
No amount of make up can compete with beautiful skin. Skin care should be your #1 makeup allowance.
Never apply new over old in regards to lipstick, and the person who told me doesnt even wear makeup! It was a good tip anyway.
“Put your best foot forward” ~ my mom
My mom never had specific advice about my appearance but I think she just tried to convey that while inner beauty is the most important, making an effort with your outer appearance helped people see how awesome you really are and it punches up your self-esteem. It had nothing to do with a particular style of clothing or makeup….she just emphasized being well-groomed and looking like you tried.
a former male boss (who was filthy rich, as was his mother) once told me that you can look like a million bucks in clothes from walmart as long as they fit you right… it was a rule his mother lived by. He also said she would NEVER walk out of the store without trying something on first. I remember that everytime I go clothes shopping 🙂
I wish I was always as adamant about sunscreen as I am now! that is MY number rule! It will save your skin and ALOT of $$$! My niece is now 16 and has flawless pale skin! I keep telling her to wear that sunscreen because sun damage accumulates early on! She does SOMETIMES! your young and invincible I guess! they just want that tan! But at least she gets the spray tan now! Absoutley believe the sun is the #1 ager! I learned the hard way!
Check labels and read reviews because some skincare products can make skin look worse!
Also, it took me a long time to realize that not all guys are looking for a woman who looks perfect–some guys (like my husband) wants a girl (like me) to look like I didn’t spend all day on my makeup.
Follow trends as much as they suit you. My mom’s always taught me that I shouldn’t follow a trend just because it’s a trend. I have to see if it fits my style, skintone, and overall look first.

Confidence 😉
both my grandma and my aunt drilled it into my head-moisturize! your face, neck decolliatage, and hands. because of them, i don’t look like i’m going to be 34.
Drink lots of water!
Take your makeup off before you go to bed – no matter what!
From the time we were very young we were taught to protect out face from the sun. If we picked green beans from the garden or strawberries we had to wear a large sun hat! Hated it at the time. Now I am 55 with only very few smile wrinkles! Thanks grandmother! Her skin was beautiful at 87 when she passed and she always used Pond’s moisturizer.
always wear spf with usa/uvb protection i always wear it no matter the weather
Use foundation to enhance your skin…not cover it up.
I love this. My Mother always told me to wear things that flatter YOU – would you rather people look straight at your lipstick colour and dress, or at how radiant you look, overall? Her advice did wonders!Â
I was told all the practical things that everyone here has mentioned but the one philosophical thing which really stuck was (don’t laugh): “Il faut souffrir pour être belle.” Essentially, there’s no beauty without pain or you must suffer to be beautiful. Humour aside, that really actually helps me. It tells me:
1) there is a dark side to beauty and can lead to dangerous obsessions;
2) it takes actual EFFORT to look good, so don’t be lazy or complacent, and yes, it may hurt to wear those amazing high-heel shoes or to get laser-hair removal, but it might be worth it and you’ll look great, so don’t let yourself go; and
3) most importantly, the fact that it takes effort means that it’s okay if you’re not naturally as “gorgeous” as models (who are all photoshopped) or those insane celebs who spend $600,000+ a year to look thin, youthful, with perfect hair and skin. Do the best you can and you’ll feel beautiful, which is all that really matters in the end.  (Yes, I really do over-think everything. LOL! But it actually helps me, especially when I compare myself to others, get depressed after looking at a fashion magazine, or when it seems too much of a hassle to get really dressed up/made up.)
the existance of temptalia.com =)
That petroleum based products (such as vaseline) work great as mascara removers.
To start taking care of your skin before it shows signs of age.
there are NO RULES!
My mum told me once that if you don’t remove your mascara you can get conjunctivitis. She told me when I was maybe 4 (I had conjunctivitis and asked what caused it) and I never forgot it. I always take off my mascara before bed.
My mother always told me the same thing, Christine. Our mom’s are right, really beauty comes from the inside. I have seen some physically beautiful girls in my lifetime who were the nastiest and most rude people I’ve ever met. If their outside matched their insides, they’d look like the Evil Queen from Snow White (the green wart-y version).
If I ever have children I would teach them that and show them Katie Makkai’s “Pretty” spoken word. It’s really beautiful, I suggest you all to watch it if you haven’t already.
