What was the last makeup phase you went through?
Brushes, probably… that was a real phase, finally dwindled, sparked up a little mid-year but back to just an ember now!

Mmmm probably pinky peach or peach blush. That was last year. Last Fall and up to this Summer. NARS Orgasm, Laura Gellar Gelatin Blush in Cantaloupe, Wet n Wild Rose Champagne, Nyx HD Blush in Hamptons and Clinique Peach Pop were my favorites. Now I have put those on the back burner and am in a more nude/ nude-ish pink blush phase this Fall and heading into Winter. Tarte Exposed. Essence Babydoll blush. Clinique Nude Pop. Mac Cosmic Force, Warm Soul & Modesty Mineralize Blush.
*Gelato* Grrr autotune!
Gold eyes and red lips. Was starting to be my signature look. Since I love wearing green and blue shadows also. I’m more balanced now. I rotate eye shadows and lippies. I was stuck on blue shadows and brown or bronze lips for a phase too.
Two great combinations!
Remember how Pokemon Go was so huge last summer? And so began that epic stream of great eyeshadow palettes? Yeah, about that…..I went a *little* bit crazy for them for awile and added quite a few to my stash.
Also, about the massive lip-fest of this year….yeah, I got a little caught up in that madness as well.
2017 may need to really be a low spend year, finally. Because, yikes, this past year I did a LOT of damage!
Low buy lol. I try but then a CCO is like 10 minutes away. I can usually abstain from online purchases which is why I have yet to buy Colourpop or MUG. I can talk myself out of a lot of palettes, MAC, Sephora etc bc in order to get that stuff it is an hour away. But when I get the urge, I just make a stop at the CCO. They probably think I’m nuts with how often I go there lol but I keep them in business:)
Still in a eyeshadow palette phase. This phase is not cheap! Ouch.
I’m definitely in the midst of a neutral eye-bold lip phase and a weird duochrome phase.
The last phase I feel like I finished was probably NARSmania. It’s still one of my favorite brands, but at this point I have most of the products I want. Conversely, I was on a break from MAC and UD for a while, but I’m back to picking things up here and there.
I wish I could say I was over using a million brow products in my daily routine, but being down to three from four still seems excessively high.
I am not sure exactly what the question is asking, makeup looks? Products? Anyway, I will go with products since that seems to be Christine’s take on the question. I think that I have been stuck on foundations now for awhile. I have recently purchased quite a few looking for that elusive perfect foundation that handles my hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, very dry skin, very cool undertones but not the weird pinkish/grey that some foundations have and call “cool”. I keep going back to the Chosungah 22 but yet I am not 100% happy with it. It just doesn’t have enough coverage for me and while you can build a little it doesn’t get anywhere near the coverage I need before it starts to look cakey. I have recently purchased Chanel Vita Lumiere, Marc Jacobs Remarkable, Sulwhasoo, Dior cushion, IT CC cream, and a couple more that I can’t remember. I feel like I was stuck on lipsticks for most of the past year so I am happy to have moved onto something else as I have so many lipsticks that I will never make a dent in them before they begin to smell.
So we’re talking buy obsessions I assume? Let’s see… Probably foundation primers for me!
Definitely greige lavenderish lipsticks, trying to find that perfect 1 & I’ve finally, 10+ lipsticks later, found several & highlighters liquid vs powder.
I just bought KVD Requiem. Very out of the box for me since I usually wear nudes. Lovely color though!
I love Requiem! Have you tried Colourpop Marshmallow? It is my favorite lavender greige lipstick.
Matte eyeshadows! My collection cruelly missed those. I learned to appreciate them this year!
bronzers, matte or otherwise! =)
I’m currently in a phase of skin products — toners, primers and foundations (I have my cleanser and moisturizers settled on).
My “would Audrey Hepburn wear it phase”. I still do look to her as a fashion and style icon, but I have moved on just a bit.
She is mine. All day long. From decade to decade. You cannot go wrong channeling Audrey from makeup to classic fashion.
I just pinned some Audrey Hepburn makeup inspirations on Pinterest. Classic beauty!
Debbie, I couldn’t agree more with what you said about Audrey Hepburn. Her style is timeless; the epitome of elegance that transcends time and trends.
Gosh, what phase hasn’t there been? 🙂
Just over the eye shadow phase, and with what I have I am sated.
Into the brush phase — getting rid of the junk I have that I don’t like, and trying to replace quantity with quality. Sometimes that means high end, sometimes it’s my tiny Elf eye brush. I do have an order coming in about a month with a friend from Japan, so that will be fun.
Into the blush phase — I own three. I use stuff up, so that’s what’s left. The three are probably enough for 99% of days, but there is that 1%….. 🙂 I’d like a few different tones. Taking my time and trying to choose carefully.
The lipstick phase has been ongoing since HS. Hopeless that will ever end.
Hi Linda,
What Japanese items (brushes maybe?) did you pick up?
You are right to take your time… Less risks to regret your purchases later!
Hi Marie-Estelle!
I’m getting the following brushes. Only 5 (tried for to go too crazy), but this should round things out for me. I can get them in the States, but my friend Yukari tells me she can get them at about 30% off in Japan. Since she doesn’t mind picking some up for herself too, I am happy to wait and get the savings.
Chikuhodo R-SL1 / RR-SL1 Shadow Liner
2x Chikuhodo CH-GSN-2 Powder Brush. This is the brush I’m after. It’s like a Tom Ford shape that just feels and works dreamy on the skin. I want it for foundation (even though it says “powder”) and for blush application and buffing.
Chikuhodo Z-10 Eye Shadow (Have one, would like a second.)
Chikuhodo FA-5 Facial Cleansing Brush
What a chance to have your friend picking up brushes for you!
I have to rely on beautylish for that but at least their service is top notch.
I will write those name down! I was tempted by the Z-10. If you say that it is your second one I know enough!
I would like to upgrade my eyeshadow brushes game ?.
Never heard of the facial cleansing brush! I am looking for a replacement for my tosowoong. I will look this up!
Thank you for taking the time to share ?
Just got today a LOVELY Hakuhodo bush — the Yachiyo, Medium Tapered. I want it for applying pigmented blush a bit better. Do I need it? I think so. I saw it at the link below and instantly had an aha! moment. This brush is so pretty to look at, I will say that.
With the other brushes coming, what I need will be complete. (Famous last words, I know.)

Cheeks! I was always more focused on eyes but when highlighters got big I was all aboar that train. Over the past year is have amassed SO many blushes and highlighters. I love using them, though! And fortunately the highlighters often double as great eyeshadows.
I don’t know that I go through “phases” – I just sort of want EVERYTHING, ALL THE TIME!!! I guess if I had to identify a phase, it might be illuminating/highlighting type products – Algenists’s Drop and Glow, Guerlain Baby Glow, Becca Back Lighting Filter Primer (or whatever the heck the name is) as well as the liquid and powder highlighting products, as well as a moisturizing/setting spray from Tatcha that gives a “dewiness” to my face. I used to shy away from all things glowy or highlight-y but in recent years, as those products have improved, I’ve really embraced them and in the past year or so (perhaps as I get older and my skin gets more dry), I have acquired quite a few.
Plummy nude lipsticks (MAC Finally Free is my favorite) because they are flattering on me. I am now more into bright pinks and pinky reds, but I expect to return to the plummy nudes before too long. And, then back again to the bright colors, etc.
I JUST went through the brush phase! I mostly went nuts over eye brushes though, and expect that as I start playing with my new blushes and highlighters and whatnot, I’ll start getting that itch for face brushes as well.
Other than being permanently stuck in an eyeshadow palette phase, I had an obessesion with colored gel liners this summer. I made quite a few orders to colorpop lol. I guess right now I’m kind of obsessed with body painting so I’ve ordered quite a few paints. I’m pretty obessed with makeup in general though
face primers for me . i always thought they were not working for me and i am discovering some new ones
Lastest one is Z palette and round eyeshadow pans! I have always been a z palette user, but quite recently I decided to organize them by brand instead of by color.. so naturally I had to have a palette of only makeup geek, and a palette of only Mac. I’ve had quite a few eyeshadow pans from these two brands, but had to fill each palette still. So, many many orders from Selfridges, Mac and Beautybay later (I had to order a few times, then look at colors I still need, place next order, instead of buying everything at once), I’ve received my last order in the mailbox (an eBay order of Mac Saddle, I couldn’t find it anywhere) last night and now my two extra large pans are complete! I refuse to compute the total amount of the price, I’m just happy I’ve got them completed before the year ends.
I’m thinking about starting a new palette for Anastasia.. but the pans are quite expensive when i have to pay a lot of tax, duty and shipping on Sephora US site without the possibility of enjoying discount. Let’s see if I have a new phase soon instead of this.
Pink lipstick! I bought a ton plus some gloss and one with oil. It lasted spring to fall.
I’m in the same kind of phase, with Makeup Geek and Anastasia. Which Makeup Geek and Mac ones are your favorites?
Blushes. I’m not really through it yet, and probably won’t be for some time, but when I finally start concentrating on other things, it’ll likely be lips.
Mini phase of greiges and mauves…updated old lady colors kind of….for eyes, yeah lips, too: CP Femme, bill, tang, mixed tape, etc. plus, it’s F/W, so deep red and brown family lips…that’s an annual phase. CP was blues baby and can you knot sets. OMG is that ultra matte lipcolor an iron woman. And massively procedural to get off. Hope they are reading this, bec they need to make a remover.
My skincare regime — I’m so happy with the results. My skin has not looked ‘right’ for several years, and I just couldn’t figure out what to do about it. It got depressing, if I’m being honest about it. Finally, after these last six months of being skin-obsessed about finding the right cocktail of products, my skin is looking so good. I’m thrilled with the results. (I should mention that I didn’t go down the trail of fillers, botox, surgery or anything of the like. I did get on a new vitamin regimen and cut my carbohydrate intake by 50%. I wanted the healthy, bright skin I had 5 years ago. And, I got it back!)
I’m still in the thick of brush obsession ??? help me!!!!
I think I’ve been on an eyeshadow or eyeshadow palette kick for a while but it was foundation in the middle of the year and I went through a highlighter spell also.
I’ve recently become obsessed with rich, warm brown/burnt orange/red brown/brick matte eyeshadow… I’ve literally hated them for years, then kind of learned to appreciate them, and now I actually love them. My favorite way to use them is in the crease & paired with a shimmery purple, red/cranberry, or grey/ silver/black on the lid for a quick smokey eye.
I’m planning to pick up NARS Surabaya this week, and the Violet Voss HG palette, Coloured Raine Queen palette, and ABH Modern Renaissance palettes are all appealing to me ATM…
I’m deep, deep, DEEP into my blush phase! It’s funny because when I first started taking makeup more seriously I refused to wear blush! I was afraid of anything accentuating any redness on my face. Now, on the other hand, I pretty much slap it on with a trowel. I’ve been experimenting with all kinds of colors, finishes, and application techniques. I think blush is seriously underrated as a makeup product!
Not that anyone asked, but my all-time favorite blushes are: IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Blush in Naturally Pretty (the texture on this one is unreal, so buttery and soft and has absolutely no detectable texture on the skin. It melts in like a cream even though it’s a powder. If they come out with other shades, I’ll buy them all!), Dior Rosy Glow Healthy Awakening Blush (does exactly what it says on the label! I swear it makes my eyes look sparklier if that’s even possible), NARS blush in Impassioned and Madly, and MAC blush in Sunbasque (perfect for a “sunburnt” look, ala Becca ads!).
And those are just my top, top, top blushes.
I have two of the Clinique Cheek Pops and I have a hard time getting product onto the brush, which is strange. I haven’t heard of anyone else with that problem. If you like these blushes, what brush do you use? Maybe my brush is just too soft?
I also think the Tarte blushes are kind of overrated (don’t hate me!). I have a full sized Exposed and a mini in another color and I find them really stiff.
I love most of the blushes you mentioned too! And yes, I too, find it hard to pick up color from Clinique cheek pop and was confused why they’re rated highly everywhere. I’ve literally tried scrapping off the top layer to see if it works better. No. I
I also find tarte blushes hard to pick up color. That is weird, I have like 20 blush brushes with different materials and shape so I don’t think it’s my problem.
I’m glad I’m not the only one! I thought I was going nuts, since both Tarte and Clinique are like two of the most-loved blush formulas ever. Oh well.
Really bright lip colors, like bright fuchsia, pinks, or oranges. I still keep some of my bright colors around for if I feel like wearing them again, but I’ve hardly touched any of them at all over the past several months, even over the summer this year.
Being obsessed with highlighters – I ordered 4 of the ABH Glow kits and have at least half of Colourpop’s offerings, plus Kevyn Aucoin Candlelight, the ELF ambient palette, and several from Becca. If you can’t see my glow from the stratosphere, I’m not on point 😉
I’ve been pretty obsessed with UD Vice and Vintage Vault Lipsticks the last few months. Since October, I’ve bought both lip palettes, all the Vintage Vault lipsticks, and Seismic.
My other phase has been rounding out my palette collection with mattes. I think now I’m good in that department, and I’ll be moving on.
I’m permanently stuck in eyeshadow palette and lipstick phases in general.
Yes! I bought both Vice palettes, and 3 of the lipsticks, including one from the Vintage Vault (Asphyxia). I want almost all of these lipsticks, but I haven’t gone hardcore on them yet because other brands have distracted me as well. Thanks to Christine’s love of Honey Bear, and the internet’s obsession with Unicorn Tears – which is every bit as awesome as people make it out to be – I just bought 8 Too Faced lipsticks, including those two. I will be returning to my UD Vice lipstick pursuit in 2017. Gotta earn my way into Ulta Platinum perks thru 2018, right?
I love Too Faced La Cremes, as well. Unicorn Tears is AMAZING.
All of the gold and sparkly things really have been attractive to me lately lol
That made me smile…I wish they had a like button here for posts like yours
Awww! Thanks a bunch!
Glad I can make someone smile ??
OMG, GLITTER AND NAIL POLISH.
Highlighting/illuminating products (creams and powders) and blushes. I have a no buy in 2017 for all these. Hopefully :).
I am just exiting what I call my “seeking” phase. For a few years, while I worked some contract work, I didn’t have the spending power I’d had in the past so on the past 18 months, I have been testing the waters to find the best of the best. Brows, concealer, skincare, and brushes. I have physical proof of what I always suspected. The highest priced item is not always the best. Often, it is, though. I have yet to splurge on Viseart but now that I have a Wayne Goss brush set, the next grails are viseart shadows and Meteorites. And by then, I am sure Christine will have introduced me to something else. ?
Liquids/creams everything… Eyeshadows, blushes, highliters, bronzers. As Im not getting any younger, I think those are more forgiving, but is very tricky because the humidity in Puerto Rico ??
For sure makeup brushes. I started with Kiko, and massive hauls at Zoeva, then some It Cosmetics and Elf ones, and in 2016 I bought almost the entire Wayne Goss collection plus some backups, and more Zoeva backups. I think I’m OK now, pretty satisfied with all my stash.
Oh I forgot to mention that I’ve had a hudge addiction to nail polishes ! I’m thé happy owner of more than 600 bottles of thèse precious gems, almost exclusively from indie brands. Not buying anymore, with the exception of Il était un vernis, cause I’m out of space to store them, but still following all the new releases ?
I’ve been in the middle of a neutral taupe eye look phase with coppery brown lips. Now that summer’s here in Aus, I will start wearing some brighter shades – greens and blues.
Nude/MLBB/browny lip colors and dusty rose/neutral blushes. I am channeling modern 90s during this fall and I might transition slightly to plums for winter. Don’t mind me if I do 🙂
The latter half of this year has been all about rediscovering my love for cosmetics, but also about severely minimizing my collection and trying to establish a ‘signature look’ – and for now I’ve seemed to settle on the fresh, classic Glossier-esque style. So, naturally, I’ve been all about the skincare, and anything that’s multifunctional, glowy, and chic. I’m calling it a phase because I doubt I’ll be able to stay away from the influence of trends for too long, but paying more attention to the health of my skin & my natural features has been a really nice detour, I gotta say.
My phase at the moment is minimal eye makeup with bold lips. I have very hooded eyes, so when my eyes are open you see no eyeshadow at all, and my lashes are invisible without mascara, so doing complicated looks feels a little bit pointless.
Lips. Soo many lipsticks. Too many lipsticks.
Mine was brushes and blushes. O my! That should be a song!
I’ve always had an obsession with eye-shadow. I did get into contouring though.
Makeup in general is a phase for me. Multiple parallel product phases! LOL! Have I mentioned I’m a VIB Rouge? *sighs, pays Visa bill*
Palettes: eyeshadow, mostly. Viseart (Paris Nudes, Sultry Muse, Neutral Mattes) Veluxe Pearl MAC palettes (amberluxe, pinkluxe, brownluxe), Pleasantly surprised by the bhcosmetics foiled and 120 palettes, btw). Moratorium on eye palettes. At least until I hit pan on ONE colour.
BITE beauty lipsticks: I now have all the Amuse Bouche shades that suit my dark pigmented lips. I have 3 Jams. I have a problem.
Foundations: BB creams, powder foundation, luminous liquid, matte liquid. Ongoing quest. Might have found “it”, which is oddly disappointing.
Highlighters: Hourglass Radiant light and Dim light, plus gave Hourglass trio palette to my kid, BECCA, MAC, several eye shadows I secretly use as highlighters
Primers: BECCA backlight priming filter, Smashbox water and oily primers, MAC Fix+ (Primer and Setting), eye primers include TooFaced Shadow Insurance, UD Minor Sin.
Brushes: hakuhodo, Real Techniques, ELF (love their Studio Line for gifts, etc. Got my esthetician AND my hairdresser into ELF brushes!), Quo’s updated line of brushes (for the Canucks in the house, the new big face brush is an amazing handled kabuki!). Curious about higher end, but I love my current brushes, so don’t want to feel like an idiot paying that much for something I already have. I’m all for high end when it really is better, but I consider the “steal of a deal”, i.e. high quality without huge markup, to be an intellectual challenge.
I have been using that BH foil palette lately too. I actually bought it on a special ipsy offer. I never heard of BH until I came here, and I think they might be the next big thing, now that they are starting to be sold at Ulta. Quality stuff at great prices, and beautiful shades.
I just don’t get ELF. Everyone loves it, but all the ELF I’ve bought, including the brushes, has been poor quality…and I love drugstore stuff.
Gel eyeliners… Now I’ve got about 25 shades that I’m trying to protect from drying. None dried so far thanks to the humid climate.
Supposedly Ingot Duraline is the gel holy grail. Even if it starts to get stiff, this brings it back to life.
Unfortunately, Inglot has left my country a few years ago. I’ve heard that MAC Studio Fix+ can be used instead but it’s a gamble and gel eyeliners are not exactly cheap products. Maybe I should try and find Inglot Duraline instead of taking any risks.
A smudged out liner on the top lash normally black green or brown with a light reflective color all over the lid, pink, champagne, white, etc. and a bold lip. Normally sephora cream lip stain in always red.
Buying every highlighter that comes out! That still hasn’t stopped…lol
I’m still in my purple lipstick phase. I cannot pass one that I don’t have without buying. I’m not talking plum, or any deep purple colors, but real, true, bright or pastel purples. I still wear pink and nude a lot, and I am moving into a brown phase, but the purple love is still there strong. Just bought Revlon, L’Oreal, Maybelline, Too Faced, and Butter London this week to give you and idea of the massiveness of this phase, which has been going on for over a year.
The most recent phase that I am not so strongly in is the gel pencil eyeliner phase. I still wear them every day, but usually black now. I bought them in every color I could find, and I still love the ease with which they go on coupled with the staying power, but I got saturated as far as collecting shades, and I found the holy grail in Lord & Berry (tied with Cargo for the most underrated brand out there).
hmmm wow IDK. I’d say foundation because I brought SOOOOO many before finding the Dior Skin one.
I’d say dark lips is a kick I’m on now. I wear a dark lip almost every other day.
Foundations, I have purchased way too many this past year trying to find the perfect one. I found 2 I really like, but now I have to finish all the others so it’s not a waste of money. My faves are the Loreal infallible matte, and Smashbox 15 hour foundation.
Hmmm…for a major buying phase, probably eye shadows. I’ve amassed quite a wardrobe over the past year but have petered off. For more recent, though small, red lips – which I never used to wear. I have four that I’ve gotten over the past three or four months. Admittedly that’s not a lot overall, but for only just adjusting to red, it’s more than enough. Generally I’m just focused on skincare; even the best products can only do so much if the base isn’t well cared for, so I spend a lot of time and money on my skin.
Concealers – Drug store, mid range, high end, theatrical lines . . . I’ve tried them all! Still end up going back to my NARS Creamy Radiant in the end.
Dewy skin, but I’m still kind of on it.
