The Wet ‘n’ Wild Pop Art trios were a big miss for me (I’m writing this answer on 8/25, so it’s entirely possible I’ve come across something else between now and when this actually posts!).
Thanks to Dorothy for today’s question! Do you have a question idea? Submit yours here.
Totally with you on the WnW Pop Art Trios! Also, I was so disappointed in Urban Decay’s lipstick in Anarchy. What a slippery mess! Within 30 minutes of just sitting there doing nothing (me, not the lipstick), it wore down to a faint pink stain.
I was disappointed in the UD lipsticks too! I got bang and f-bomb, and they would not stay on my lips. The reviews seem to be overwhelmingly positive, but they just didn’t work for me.
Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light. It was such an utter disappointment. I love Mood Light but Ethereal was just atrocious–It was so chalky and was so dry in the pan I could hardly pick any product up, and it didn’t give any “moonlight” glow as advertised. I went and returned it for a Korres Lip butter in plum (OMG, love it!) and a YSL sheer candy balm.
Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer! It was awful as it made me look shiny and also breakout a lot after the four times that I used it. I don’t understand why it’s the holy grail for some people. Overpriced!
I hope they did’nt change the formula or something?
I have not purchased a tube im quite a while, but
I have used many tubes out it and it works great, also
the color is a spot on match that I have never seen
with other brands. I really hope they did’nt change it!
I have tried LM’s tinted moisturizer a couple of times and both times, I hated it! It was so thick, shiny, and gross. Glad I’m not the only one with this experience!
You’re not the only one! I too bought into all the hype, and it was just this thick greasy cream on my face. I had to return it, unfortunately.
Bingo! Thick, greasy cream for sure. My already large pores were magnified and I swear the color oxidized on my face a little bit, so the color looked weird, too.
Well, I’m returning Hourglass’ top selling foundation primer (Veil) today, or possibly exchanging. I had a sample that was thick and worked beautifully, but all that will squeeze out of my full-size pump is a very thin liquid I can barely keep from sliding through my fingers before I get them to my face. I’m hopeful it’s a bad bottle rather than this being normal for the product!
I’ve had great luck with all of my recent beauty purchases, but one that comes to mind is LORAC luster drops. As soon as I applied the liquid, my lids started burning and itching terribly. I had to wash my face immediately and returned the product the next day…
Jordana eyeshadow pencil thingy. My eyes started turning red and hurting not even an hour after I put it on. I took it right off and it went right in the trash.
NYX Retractable lip pencil in Nude. It doesn’t go at all with my fair skintone, just looks the ugliest 90s brown shade on me! At least it was cheap, and it made me realize that I can’t use any “nude” lipsticks or lip liners because they’ll just be too dark for me. In my case, a very light pink lip liner would be best.
Well, a few weeks ago I got the LE pressed highlighter from Bare Minerals, the pink one (can’t recall the name). I thought it was going to be awesome, but it looks just so blah on me. I am not giving up on it yet, but it was disappointing
Mac mineralize eyeshadow duo! beautiful colors but didn’t stay true for more than an hour, and then terrible creasing. (i’ve tried it with hush and nars smudgeproof but to no avail).
any suggestions to help improve my experience?
NYX’s Smokey eye palette from their Parallel Worlds Collection! Eyeshadows were dry and had poor colour payoff.
Despite my best efforts to love it, I’d have to say the Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo. I picked up No. 6 (poor judgement) because of the reviews on Sephora where a lot of people w/ light skin recommended it. It turned out to be a “My lips but browner” shade and smelled like expired, cheap lipstick. Total miss for me.
Glad to know this…I have been coveting one of these and will hold off now.
Pandora’s Better Blonde palette. Everything about it was bad except for the adorable packaging.
I had to check out Pandora; it’s a “new” brand to me, and it looks interesting. ;). What didn’t you like about it? Is this your first time trying this brand? If not, how have their other products worked for you?
I bought this shampoo from Lush called BIg that promised big hair and left me with a big mess. Didn’t do anything for me and the pricetag hurts.
Nothing that I bought on its own, but I bought an IT Cosmetics “showstopper” (special value deal) a few months ago. The eye shadow trio that came with it, called “Pretty in Nudes”, simply doesn’t show up at all. The 3 colours are so “nude” as to be invisible. But the rest of the products were such a good value – worth far more than I paid and such good stuff – that it’s not a big deal.
Lancome La Base
Laura Gellar Balance and Brighten in medium. It turned orange on my skin.
Maybelline fit me foundation, I actually quite like the texture and the coverage, but my color 115 is WAY too pink
Yes the 110 is also pink based as well and it’s the only drugstore foundation shade that even close to my skintone but I’m Olive toned. Not a good combo. lol
Yeah I wish more companies would offer neutral shades or slightly warm. My skin does has pink undertones, but it makes me look so darn red! Neutral is more flattering on most!
Mac Prep + Prime Beauty Balm ~ it just sat on the surface of my skin and never really sank in. Made my skin look terrible. I have friends for whom this is a holy grail and I really wanted to love it, but alas no.
Also Maybelline Big Eyes Mascara. The applicator was awkward for me because both ends were too short and the mascara wasn’t great. I couldn’t stop it from getting all over the place.
Pretty much every essie nail polish I’ve tried lately. The worst are butler please and spaghetti strap, horrible, horrible application.
I seriously do not get the hype about Essie Nail Polish. Each one I have tried has been awful and returned.
I agree. I have 3 essie polishes (out of loads that I’ve tried and wanted to buy). Only one (pink peachy color) applies just alright on me. Everything else has been a streaky mess so far. Brush is also too small.
I have 2 of these polishes in pink shades and they are both epic fails!! Four coats and still streaky!!
I have to agree on the Mac bb…just awful! $30 wasted…shipped it to Germany so i couldn’t return.
I would have to say BH Cosmetics cool, tropical and matte palettes. I was swept up by youtubers love for them. Don’t get me wrong the palettes are beautiful but the color pay off is lacking. I do use a primer and base but the colors aren’t as vivid on me.
Fortunately, I haven’t had very many *complete* “misses”, as I try my best to get them to work. If it means trying different brushes, primers, application techniques, etc., and I can usually find a use for everything.
The last product I tried was tarte Exposed. While I love the formula, and the pigmentation & staying-power are absolutely fabulous, the color is just all wrong, for me. I’m not really out anything, as I cashed in my Sephora points for a tarte sampler that included some other great products I love. I’ve read comparisons of Exposed to NARS Douceur, but on my skin, they are completely different colors. While Douceur provides a very natural flush/glow, Exposed is just a bright pink obvious makeup product. However, if I layer powder over it, I can make it work. Again, makeup isn’t a one-size-fits-all endeavor, so sometimes a little additional effort is needed.
Marc Jacobs nail polish. The colors were just gorgeous and it dried super fast but it chipped, like, within an hour. Totally weird formula that didn’t work for me. Granted nail polish chips on me a lot anyway, but this was ridiculous. Hope they fix it because the colors are amazing.
Hourglass Lip Treatment Oil, I love Hourglass but
this did nothing for me & had zero results w/providing
moisture. Had to return it..
Fresh Umbrian Clay Treatment Bar, really expensive
and hard to work with, returned. The cream version
in the tube is wayy better!
I also returned the Wet n Wild palettes Christine
mentioned, so sad they were not hits like their past
shadows!
There have been a couple of products recently that I didn’t love, but a major miss would be the Julep DD Creme & Concealer. Both of those products turned my fair skin super orange. And they were just cakey and disgusting, which is sad because I love Julep’s other products!
Clinique eye shadow chubby stick. Horrible. It was so stiff it barely applied any color at all.
For me it was the Benefit Flawless Primer. Didn’t control oil, made my foundation go patchy sometimes, just didn’t work. I tried it multiple different ways and with different foundations and just didn’t like it.
Rimmel Scandal Eyes Show Off Mascara
NYX Jumbo eye pencils/shadows are a complete miss for me. After like 15 minutes of putting it on, it creased and a majority of it went away. -.-
Benefit BADgal mascara – I was wondering why my undereye looks so dark after coming home from school…and then I remembered I was using this mascara that day. Blah. I’m glad it’s just a sample.
Stila lip glaze. The color did nothing on me and smells horrible like herbal meds.
A Bourjois eyeshadow trio, very disappointing and pricey ( 14 € ! ), it’s the only major miss, Bourjois has good products but also really bad ones !
Hourglass Immaculate Foundation. Ugh. I have a very oily t-zone. This gives very little coverage, it’s hard to apply, and it does nothing for oil control in the t-zone (makeup melted away, even with primer – including Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer) while it dried out my cheeks. I hated the finish too. Needless to say, I returned it.
Definitely the UD Naked Foundation. I was so stoked for it but boy, did it give me the worst cystic acne EVER. I was hoping that it wasn’t the cause–I stopped using 2 other new products I’d started on the same day, but nope it was the foundation. It’s not oil free (which I didn’t know), so not only did I get the huge painful acne, but it would also slide right off my face even with primer on. It never set; three hours later, every time I’d touch my face it would smear right off. It was my first big let down from Urban Decay.
NARS Albratoss: I looked like I was wearing frosting!
Maybelline Fit Me foundation stick. It clung to the dry patches of skin even after blending with a brush, beauty blender, and fingers. It even clung to the skin on my nose and I am oily there. Ugghh!! There’s no saving this product 🙁
L’Oreal’s waterproof Voluminous mascara.
The non-waterproof formula smeared far less. I end up looking like a raccon everytime I try the “waterproof” version. As soon as I find time to purchase another formula (I rarely use mascara), this one is going into the trash.
Bobbi Brown Long-wear shadow stick. It was really difficult to work with. It was such a shame because I loved the color I had. I could really see using the color very often but I could not make it work. It was very patchy.
This isn’t really Maybelline’s fault. Because the texture polishes have been wearing all right on me, I bought one of the Maybelline vintage leather shades that dry matte and have flakies in them. HOWEVER, I have never done well with matte nail polish. It chipped noticeably in a day and badly enough to need removal after two. While that is nowhere near the nightmare I had with Zoya’s matte formula (how does one chip polish from the center of their nail while SLEEPING?!), it’s typical of my wear with mattes.
If the color looks and wears okay with a topcoat like some neons do, then I’ll keep it. Otherwise, I’ll gift it away or keep it for a Christmas secret santa I do with other nail polish fiends, haha.
Laura Mercier Spellbound Highlighter….. Way tooo Ashy and Frosty for me ! I wanted to love it, after all the great reviews and swatches but it did not work for me at all… I returned it …. : (
Laura Mercier Flawless Face Kit Oil-free. I only like the brushes and sponges. I don’t See the sense of the primer, TM makes me look shiny like hell, Concealer doesn’t stay and is too light compared to the TM.
Chanel blush and eyeshadow quad #Prelude in the baked european version. A big nothing!!!
Chanel’s Poudre Universelle Libre in Reverie from Holiday 2012. Unfortunately, I ordered this BEFORE I saw your review and when it came I was hoping against hope that maybe mine would somehow be magically different. Sadly, that was not the case. It had so much sparkly glittery stuff in it and it looked RIDICULOUS on me. I have never bought a high end powder that saddened me as much as that one did. It went back to Chanel and I do not miss it. Disaster!!!
Jordana pencil eyeliner in white. It will NOT go on my waterline, it’s extremely hard, and I feel like I’m in a tug-o-war with my lash/waterlines or inner corner if I use it. It’s a dollar that I wish I had back.
