What type of hair do you have?

What type of hair do you have? How would you describe it? Love it or hate it?

My hair is ridiculously long (at least for me) at the moment–about to my waist. It’s thick, heavy, and there’s a lot of it. I don’t dye my hair (haven’t since I was maybe 19 or 20). I don’t really like or dislike it. I wish it was lighter (and I already get it thinned), though.

Thanks to Kafka for today’s question!

I wish I hadn’t dyed my hair in a while, then it’d be easier to dye now! I don’t even know what  my natural color is anymore. I have fine hair (texture) but it is insanely thick. Even my hair stylist and the other stylist seem to comment on how ridiculous my hair is. I got 10 inches cut off in April and it is finally easier to manage.

Um, I have… oily hair? I’m not sure how else to describe it lol! Um… it’s not that thin or thick, so I guess it’s normal? It’s also short?

Uh, I wish it was a bit thicker. It’s just nice to have a thick head of hair. I guess I wish it was also softer and more pliable? When it’s short it always sticks up. I have to use quite a bit of product to smooth it down.

When it comes to hair, I am almost completely clueless.

My hair is medium in length. It’s a bit below my shoulders. It’s extremely curly, thick, heavy, coarse, dry hair. It gets puffy and frizzy easily in humid weather. It hasn’t been dyed since 2004. My hair is extremely prone to breakage, too. My hair is a light/light-medium brown with ash and warm tones naturally. I’m at the point where I’m okay with my hair; I certainly don’t love it, but I don’t hate it near as much as I used to hate it. I literally used to cry about my hair when I was younger!

Quinctia Avatar

Haha, our hair thicknesses and color seem to be similar.  I’ll be honest, I’ve let my hair grow to my butt twice in my life.  And your hair becomes such a slog at that point…with thick hair, every inch of growth seems to increase time washing and conditioning exponentially.  You never do anything with it, because it’s already created so much work just by being there.  If you’re feeling weighed down, you’ll feel so amazed when you finally cut it all off–the worst part is how other people seem to get offended when you chop off long hair–um, they didn’t have to wait hours for it to dry or spend eons in the shower making sure shampoo actually got to the scalp!

I’ve tended to get my hair cut (just above the shoulders) and lightened a shade or two in late spring every year for the past few years.  Always with layers and almost always with some thinning in back.  It makes summer so much more bearable.

My hair’s naturally wavy, and it gets a bit more curly the longer it gets.  I’ve not gotten my seasonal cut yet, and I’m toying with keeping it longer…but I think I’m still going to go in and get some stuff layered out again, especially since I skipped the thinning last time.  I actually like the texture of my hair, and it’s soft and shiny because I don’t do much to damage it–a yearly round with some hair dye isn’t too harsh.  Only bad things about my hair is that it’s always been terribly prone to tangling, so I am picky with my type of conditioner and I can never skip it, and also that it’s always soaked up water like a sponge.  I borrowed my mom’s hair dryer a few times in my teens, but if it’s going to take an hour to blow it dry anyway…I might as well shower more at night or drive places with the windows down. 😉

I’ll have to steal your words: “It’s thick, heavy, and there’s a lot of it. I don’t dye my hair.” Mine is a couple inches above my waist, and it’s in wavy blonde layers. It’s smooth enough, but I’m always craving more moisture for it.

queenmoonracer Avatar

My hair is fine and thin. It’s currently a deathhawk – which I adore. It had been ridiculously long (which caused serious headaches for me) and a really severe asymmetrical bob.  It has been pretty much every color I could want to dye it and I took a break from dye for the last three years (upkeep is hard with a toddler) – I’m planning later this month to go back to black.

cydoniac Avatar

when you say you get it thinned, what exactly do you mean? you have it cut in layers, asymmetrical or do you get something else done to your hair?

cydoniac Avatar

@Christine (Temptalia) ok,thanks for the clarification!! I’m not very good at understanding hair jargon…sorry.. 🙁
I keep mine as simple as possible,I’ve never dyed it, nor have I added highlights or the sort, but I have a functional haircut which is a little layered and needs close to no combing and styling…what I Iove about my hair is that it grows very quickly, it resists split ends like crazy and it is very soft and shiny…!! of course it helps that I take good care of it and I hardly ever use styling products, like hair sprays, mousse etc…

Mine is long, and it’s been long for about 18 years now. It’s halfway down my back at the moment! It’s naturally straight, but I got a perm last July and it’s still holding up pretty well! I don’t go to the hairdressers’ in Belgium, because I’ve had enough bad experience already. My hairdresser from back home tries to give me a sustainable hairstyle that will see me through the year, and the FIRST thing I do after getting out of the airport is going to him!

Amanda Avatar

I have short hair. It’s naturally very straight and fine. And oily. It used to never hold any kind of curl without a whole can of hairspray but lately it’s holding curl pretty well. So I like that. I do wish it was a little thicker and less oily. But mostly I like it.

greensocksrocks Avatar

for the first time i’m letting my hair grow as much as i can (im 24 years old). im a brunette and now its long,  in a V shape and with layers, to add volume and dynamics to my curls. since a young age (probably 13/14), i tried almost everything possible, either with cuts or colors! i like to change and i am mostly not affraid to, but sometimes i regret my decisions. have passed through various shades of red, have been blonde, dyed black, return to my original brown, etc, several times! had coloured highlights like green, purple, red, pink, blue.. the only thing i havent really done (and dont want to) is to have dreadlocks 🙂

vixen89 Avatar

Be thankful for your lovely long and thick hair, mine is thin, fine and strawberry blonde. It doesn’t grow longer than past my shoulder blades and its too thin and soft to do anything with! I’m loving your hair….trade?

zainab Avatar

My hair is basically a medium brown, though it looks sort of reddish in some lights. It’s very thick and root curls, and at the moment it comes half-way down my back. It was longer recently but was getting too dry so I trimmed it back by a couple of inches. I haven’t dyed it since I was 15 or so, it’s dry enough as it is! I don’t love or hate my hair, though keeping it from looking messy can be a pain- I wash it every day and try not to touch it when it’s dry. You can’t really style my hair, but on the plus side I can trim it myself because it never looks uneven.

Ravn94 Avatar

I have about medium thickness to my hair – it’s not what you’d call thick, but it’s not thin either. I used to have thick, wavy hair, but in my mid-teens I went through depression and it just.. fell out, and never really regained that thickness. Nowadays I have a large portion of my head almost-shaved (about a centimeter length), and almost shoulder length hanging down one side (like a grown-out mohawk). I usually put that part in curlers over night, and it looks soft and wavy. It definitely helps combat frizzyness to put it in curlers before it dries.

neelachloe Avatar

very thin, fine hair. and not a huge amount of it. currently about chin length, i don’t know if i want to grow it out or not. also stopped using commercial dyes and bleach. using henna to keep a nice red hair.

Kate MacDonald Avatar

I had no idea your hair was that long! Lucky for you it looks really healthy.

Mine’s above my shoulders, which is how I’ve had it for a number of years. It used to be way longer, but it just seemed to get kind of shapeless. Although my individual hairs are fine, there’s lots of it, so it’s very heavy and thick when it starts to grow out.

I’ve been dyeing it for years (currently red/ strawberry blonde), so it’s a bit dry, but in better shape than you’d expect. It’s pretty wavy (although it straightens out more as it grows, under the gravity of its own weight) and I rarely do anything with it.

I like how it feels, since it’s in pretty good condition, but there is one small patch on the back of my head where the hair is always ridiculously dry. It makes me nuts, because it feels different and tangles easily, but I can’t seem to correct it.

miriam Avatar

This may sound weird but I have extremely thick hair but I also lose a lot when I brush it or take a shower.  Yet there’s always sooo much of it falling out, don’t know why it won’t get lighter in weight but it sure is falling out…go figure.  I also dye my hair once every 2 months to cover my graying hair.  I only style it for special occasions because it takes over a hour to blow dry it out, another hour to curl or straighten, and for me that’s just way too much work for a daily basis.  I usually let it air dry after my shower but it dries out poofy and big.  It takes 24 hours for it to calm down and not look so big.  I also wish they’d make clips more durable for women with extremely thick hair, because mine are constantly breaking.  It really sucks to constantly buy replacements every few weeks.  If anyone here has any suggestions for a retailer that sells good quality hair accessories I’d really appreciate the feedback.

paneradfisk Avatar

My hair is bright red, long enough to cover the chest, and I don’t know how to describe the texture. It SHOULD be much more damaged than it is, after years of dying black and bleaching, but I have taken care of it and it is shiny and soft. When I haven’t washed it for days it feels thinner than it usually does, most of the time it’s thick enough but not coarse or overly thick. I like my hair. It’s annoying to wash my hair, my whole back and face and shower turns pink. For some people bright red hair would mean that you can’t wear red/pink clothes and eyeshadows, but I don’t care. One thing is for sure though and that is lipgloss shall never be worn at any time if you don’t want it to act as a sticky hair magnet.

MIRIANV Avatar

I have dirty blonde, straight and fine hair, however, i have A LOT of it. It gives the illusion of thickness. It usually takes 1-1 1/2 hours to have a stylist cut it.

I used to have all different lengths fand colors from black and white mowhawk, white severe asymmetrical, red pixie, EVERYTHING. for the past year it’s been long (almost to my waist as well) and my natural color! it’s probably my favorite way to have my hair. I vary the part of my hair a lot, pin it up different ways, style it. so versatile. The only downfall, which most people are not stranger to, are split ends! I’ve never had hair this long and the breakage at the ends is to annoying 🙁

LJ777 Avatar

I like my hair! My hair icon is Princess Aurora/Sleeping Beauty in the Disney cartoon…I know that makes me insane, but I don’t care, I love it! It’s down to my waist, golden blonde and waves naturally, it isn’t too thick so that it’s heavy, but it isn’t thin, thankfully.
Of course, this is partially natural – the thickness, wave and colour (mostly). But it isn’t without a LOT of upkeep and expensive attention that I keep my hair in good condition.
I use Redken All Soft shampoo and conditioner followed by Bed Head Ego Boost or Argan Oil 3 times a week, then once a week I use Kerastase Reflection range – chroma riche shampoo, followed by their gorgeous chroma riche treatment masque and then either their Radiance milk or Reflection fluide. I never use straightening irons, and I rarely blow dry my hair – maybe a couple of times a month.
I use chroma riche because I do get a few highlights just to enhance the natural colour, to make it more dimensional in the light.

My hair has finally reached my bra strap, something I’m very excited about, so I guess it’d be in the long territory. It’s wavy when it’s long, and I can have Shirley Temple curls when it’s short (something I’m never doing again!). Dark brown enough that half the people think it’s black, and I keep it in layers with side swept bangs. I definitely love my hair, it’s pretty soft. Only problem is due to length, I have split ends so I have to go trim it religiously all the time…though I haven’t touched it for almost 4 months, whoops.

GloriaKate Avatar

My hair is extremely curly and unmanagable. Once upon a time I used to straighten it everyday (and I LOVED it then bc it had body) but then I had a baby and got married and now I don’t have time. Nowadays the only thing that keeps it from becoming a giant white girl afro is copious amounts of mousse, leave-in conditioner, and anti-frizz serum.

eisdamme Avatar

I have babyfine, thin straight hair and I hate it! I can get a little volume from product, a choppy cut, and teasing, but braiding and ponytails are almost impossible. They’re about the size of a pencil!

It’s been dyed black since ’96, with a few brief periods of red, but black will always be my go-to color. Right now it’s a few inches past my shoulders and very textured, with a side part and bangs.

Yumi Avatar

My hair is straight, thick and heavy as well so I keep it short in a Pob. I’ve had this style for half a year now and I’ll probably keep it for a bit since it’s the best cut I’ve ever had. Currently the front is just barely past my chin and the back is halfway down my neck, and it’s already driving me crazy! I don’t have the patience to grow it out so I see my hairdresser every 4 weeks, mostly to get it thinned and the length maintained. On top of getting it thinned, I have to flat iron it down most mornings. I can’t say I’m a fan of my hair but I’ve learned to deal with it.

AnGeLwInGz Avatar

I’m still regretting the “Big Chop” from last month. My hair is thick with natural spiral curls. Right now it’s a little past my shoulders in long layers. The muggy weather is not treating my hair well at the moment. I look a bit like a tumbleweed haha.

Priscilla Avatar

My hair is thick, frizzy, and curly. Stylists love it because it doesn’t put up a fight for them when they straighten or style it. I can’t seem to be able to tame the friz. I usually pull it back because it’s easier. I’ve had basically the same style at different lengths since I was fifteen. Layered with side-swept bangs. I started going gray when I was about fourteen (i have a lot of anxiety combined with a genetic predisposition to going gray). My hair is only a few shades away from black. I dye it a lot. I’ve dyed it almost every color. My close friend is a hairstylist and when we lived in the same city she would just call me up because she felt like doing something new to my hair. I’m cool with being the stylist’s guinea pig.

Emily Avatar

My hair is medium length and of average thickness. Which doesn’t seem like a bad thing…but the top layer of my hair is slightly wavy, and the underside is curly and extremely frizzy. It’s so frizzy that I look like I have a lot more hair than i actually do. It refuses to stick together and lie flat. Some pieces will curl nicely, but others will curl or wave and then go straight for a bit, only to end with a curl at the end. It’s ridiculous. I hate it, and I still haven’t found a way to fix it that doesn’t take hours every morning.

Rocker Chick Avatar

my father used to call my hair tumble weed….it was crazy…would get into knots..but overall..its coarse, dense…and like Michael myers…you can’t kill it no matter how much bleach i have on it

simba498 Avatar

I have naturally curly-coily and sometimes kinky hair.  It is not dyed so my grays are having their way.  I use to relax my but now I am rocking the chemical free natural hair.  I absolutely LOVE my hair.  It is freeing and AWESOME!

GracieGee Avatar

long(down to my waist)
med-thick hair but not bothering thick(i just thin it out a little)
coloured- demi/semi permanant redken toners
low maintance (apart from using treatments a couple of times a week) -redken
I use redken colour extend shampoo, redken conditioner and redken treatment (expensive but works REALLY well)
my hair is fairly straight but i put it up in buns overnight to give it volume
i wash my hair every 3-4 days (so it not as oily as it was before
and I actually LOVE my hair, its LONG, SHINY, SOFT 🙂

AngelinaDiaz Avatar

My hair is extremely curly and the texture is fine. It tends to get very dry, so I have to condition it constantly. It is a light brown with blond streaks (no bleach) and my longest layer is about 3 inches past my shoulder. I wish it was thicker and longer. I never straighten my hair because I like having curly hair!

Nikki Avatar

I am an African American woman with medium length, thick, kinky curly, 4a hair.  I got bored with my natural hair color (which is off black), so I’ve started dying it Honey Blonde (by Clairol Textures and Tones), and now I love it all over again!  I enjoy my hair being natural because I can be versatile in my styling choices.

Phyrra Avatar

My hair is straight, bordering on fine and thin. I wish it was thicker! I’m ok with straight but sometimes I see curly hair that is to die for and think… if only!

KateandZena Avatar

I have fine, fragile dark brown hair (with purple highlights at the moment.) The difference is I have A LOT of fine hair compared to most! It’s pretty straight with a tiny wave at the end in the front, but my hair will relax any and all curls within two hours to just hair that curls under the ends save for wettest set pin curls that have dried overnight. Even those relax to really loose curls in five hours. My hair…it hates curling. It’s VERY annoying. It’s very oily, so it requires daily washing.

It has layers in the front to give a little volume, but it doesn’t have a lot of layers in the back; too many layers and my hair would look too thin, too few and my hair would be as flat as a pancake. It’s layered just enough to achieve volume, face framing and dimension! My longest layer ends just half an inch below my shoulder bones (for those who go by acronyms, it’s between BSB and BSL.) I’d like it to be a little longer, but knowing my hair, it won’t grow past here.

Sometimes, I just want to trade my hair for some normal hair.

Shery Avatar

My hair is to my waist as well and very thick. I used to hate how thick it was and always wore it in a ponytail because it was so annoying. But now I love it! It’s voluminous and a bit coarse (used to be extremely frizzy because I used to blow dry and straighten everyday – now I don’t use heat tools at all), so it’s not bad. I love that I don’t need to use volumizing products even with 2nd day hair and there are so many hairstyles you can do with long, thick hair. 🙂 I find with thick hair keeping it long is really the best solution for it because it weighs it down and it looks more like hair and less like a puffball ahaah

I am an Afro-Jamaican-Canadian woman with a natural low ‘fro style and I absolutely adore my hair! I love the curliness of my hair and how well the style suits my face. I would never want my hair to look any other way. 🙂

My hair is naturally straight but thick and really hard to style (curl/waves) it’s medium lenght (to my shoulders) and I dyed it red! 🙂 but my natural color is dark brown.

GenaCunningham Avatar

I have very thick, dry, wavy hair that nearly reaches my waist.  I’ve been getting grays since my early twenties, so I touch up my roots (and temples) about once a month; I color the ends of my hair once every 4–6 months or so.  I really try to baby my hair!  I wash it as little as possible–maybe twice a week, more often in the summer time or if it seems “dirty” (of course).  I gently comb it out (this helps reduce tangles), then wash it with sulfate-free shampoo and deep conditioner.  Afterwards, I comb it out very tenderly, then put it in a braid.  I only use VERY wide-tooth combs, never a brush.  Once in a while, though, I will flat-iron my bangs, but only once in a while.
I’ve always loved my thick, thick hair!  It’s great to be able to use things like Moroccan Oil to protect and finish my style, without worrying about it looking greasy.   My daughter also has very thick, wavy hair.  When she complains about it, I always remind her of the poor girls that have see-through hair–you know, you can see their scalp through the hair, it’s so thin.  Back in the day, when I got a perm, it would last for YEARS, until my hair grew and it got cut out.  I had friends with see-through hair that got a perm and the perm would disappear by the end of the week!  Hey, I have a large nose, they didn’t; I deserve ONE of the good-looking genes!
I also love that my hair is wavy.  Straight hair is lovely, too, but I’m not going to damage my hair just so the pretty waves don’t show.  I went on a date with a certain guy once; after the date, he asked me if I could straighten my hair once in a while.  To the curb with ya!
P.S.  If anyone could recommend a good deep conditioner for dry/color-treated hair, that would be great!  I’m always looking for new ones.

Safyre Avatar

My hair is borderline anorexic. I kind of wish it was thicker, but every time I use a product that’s meant to thicken it, the difference in weight and texture bothers me, I wish that it looked thicker but kept its lightweight feel. I’m a natural sometimes-mousy, sometimes-slightly golden brunette and haven’t died my hair since last November. I’ve been thinking of dying it red but am not sure about doing so just because it’s been so low-mantainance. It’s also got kind of a wave/curl to it, and while I used to hate it and straighten it all the time, I’ve kind of gotten the hang of working with my natural texture 🙂

Alison Cole Avatar

Same as Christine’s – almost waist-length, thick, heavy, dark, not dyed and there’s a tonne of it. I’m planning to get my hair layered and a bit of the length cut off to make things a bit easier.

Jayme Avatar

Super thin – I’m always looking for volume! I’ve always had it short, but last week I got a bob (first time in my life it’s ever been above my shoulders!). To my surprise, it’s much bouncier short and looks fuller even without me doing anything to it!

DaniArci Avatar

I think you would look great cutting a few inches off. Your entire face would brighten up if you cut off some length. long hair weighs you down and there is def such a thing as hair being too think and too long. i would get a nice cut. long layers. movement.
