What part of your makeup routine brings you the most joy?
My eye makeup for sure. It’s what made me fall in love with makeup, and surprisingly, it’s still the part that I get most excited for. If there’s ever something that compels me to sit down and put on makeup, it’s putting on eyeshadow.
Oh man, that’s a hard question because I enjoy applying my make up so much! Eyeshadow brings me a lot of joy, but blush and highlight brings me just as much joy.
I agree 100%, eyes are easily the most fun out of a whole makeup routine. Blending, defining, and deciding what colors best go together can take some thought but in the end, when you look into the mirror and everything looks great it makes it all worth it.
Eyeshadow for me, too. It’s where I’ve always been able to be the most colorful and creative. I also enjoy seeing how different colors affect how my eye color appears, as I have central heterochromia and different shadow shades make my eye appear more green, olive, golden, gray, amber, or brown.
So, I had to look up what central heterochromia is, and then I realized, that I have it as well! My eyes are brown closest to the pupil, then fade to a weird olive/yellow color, then the outer most part of my iris is green/gray/blue. My son also has central heterochromia; his eyes fade from a sort of yellowy brown to blue-gray.
Eye colors have always fascinated me and this is just so interesting! Especially using different colors of eyeshadows to make eyes lean more toward a certain color. Everyone always says that reds make green eyes look more green, but purple is what does that for me. Reds make my eyes look more gray.
I think the shade of the eyes and shadows, and shadow undertones, also play a part. I think purples and burgundies make my eyes look more green than straight up reds do.
Eyes are certainly the most fun but I get the most joy from foundation. I grew up with severe acne and seeing relatively, sort of, clear looking skin brings me real pleasure.
While eye make-up is the most fun part, since it allows playing more with techniques, finishes, colors, placements, the most joy I get is from having a great base. Setting the concealer and foundation with powder and looking at the polished look is still followed by having the brows on… and the finishing everything with a bold lipstick.
I think the only part that doesn’t bring me joy is the cheek products. 😆
My lip products, because that means I’m all done putting myself together! Plus, that always makes me feel prettier and polished. Little wonder then that lately I have been less enthused about doing my makeup, as wearing a face mask while wearing lipstick or gloss utterly nonsensical.
Wearing red lipstick and a green face mask is the best. <3
Eye makeup even though my eyes are very tricky with aging skin and hoods, the skin fold kind, which now extend down my outer corner. The challenge is to work with them and not against them. Keeps it interesting. If my hoods get any sloppier, I’ll be like Rocky “Cut me Adrian”!!!!
You just described my eyes. It makes doing a cat eye pretty much impossible.
It is too stressful for me and a full wing looks plain weird so I don’t bother. I do a modified cat eye with an extension from my lower lash line with Eye shadow connecting it with a triangle of shadow off my top lash and I blend this like crazy so it is seamless with my transition shades sweeping towards brow tail. To finish, I use a liquid pen to create a mini wing drawing just slightly over the fold to create the tip. That’s the toughest part requires me to be super patient and steady. The fold can move so easily and completely wreck it. Oy!
That’s pretty much what I do too. I might use pencil instead of liquid liner, at the end but the basic idea is definitely the same – I can’t really do a classic wing anymore, but the upward angled triangle of darker shadow with some lining on the out third (also angling up) gets me where I want to go 🙂
I don’t do any part of my makeup routine that I don’t like, but for me, the most enjoyable part is lipstick, which is the final step. Once the whole face is done, *chef kiss*
It’s a tie between eyeshadow and buffing with finishing powder as the final step.
Eye makeup used to be a favorite but lately I’ve just found it be more of a hassle and high maintenance. I wear glasses and I’d need contacts to be able to do more complicated fun eye looks (otherwise, I’d have to take on/off my glasses like a 100 times every time I do eye makeup). I dislike the feeling of wearing mascara, contacts and fake lashes, and the time & care it takes to remove everything (I use waterproof mascara bc non-waterproof one’s always gives me panda eyes). Not to mention that my eyelids (well–my skin in general) easily acts up with eczema if I have too many things rubbing against it (brushes or cream formulas). I suppose I find everything else fun–cheek & lip products and base.
Ever since I bought the la Mer powder brush, its dusting my Meteorites on my face as the last step of my routine. Between my love of Guerlains Meteorites and the beautiful soft brush I LOVE it!
If I could create looks as beautiful as yours, Christine, eyes would definitely be my favorite. Currently, I would have to say my face because I finally found a foundation that works for my temperamental skin. Looking at a luminous complexion that isn’t dehydrated or caked with heavy makeup brings me great joy! ? Nancy’s comment made me smirk. It’s so stupid to wear lip products under the mask, and yet, I still do it! Lip liner…no gloss.
Putting on lipstick 🙂
Complexion. The more I learn about makeup, the better I become at minimizing my products to achieve glow-y coverage that looks like skin (and that lasts on my oily skin). I recently purchased Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage and, thanks to foundation finder and YouTube, managed to order the correct shade and conceal spots successfully. Once I have a good skin base going, applying red lipstick comes in at a close second (Chanel lipstick, in particular!). My eyes are so deepset and hooded that they frustrate me to no end so I tend to just smudge MAC Teddy along the top lash or push a deep brown shadow into the lashes and call it a day.
Eyelashes, I love long, long eyelashes, when I worked I used to get extensions, loved them so much that my sister learned how to do them!
The part of the makeup process that brings me the most joy is applying my lipstick (which automatically brightens my face) and choosing and applying my eyeshadows too. As Isabella Muse once said, that looking at an eyeshadow palette reminds her of all the colourful Crayola pencil palettes she used as a child and wondering which pencil to pick up first. That’s me!
Probably blush and highlight! Lipstick is absolutely my favorite thing to shop for, but getting a nice glow to my skin has become really comforting and satisfying since getting my lighting, skincare and blush collection in order.
I too love eye makeup in colors and nudes, metallic, satin, and matte. I do find I need matte or close for my crease due to my aging eyes.
I’m a sucker for lip products; liner, gloss, lipstick, you name it. Lately I’ve been getting such joy from seeing how ‘juicy’ i can get my lips.
But tbh, my most joyous part of applying makeup is actually highlighting the tip of my nose :).
I need to get out more, I know!
Easy, my base!
I feel like once my base is in place, cream contour, concealer, foundation and liquid highlighter, my skin looks luminous and dewy and with just a bit of mascara and lip balm, I feel great; especially at this time of year.
Blush, eyeshadow ( i enjoy this step the least), brow gel, powder highlight and even lipstick I can live without.
Ditto! Eyes all the way!
