We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

*Always excited to see something new from Colour Pop! They almost always hit it out of the ballpark in terms of quality, colors, formula, pricing
*Also excited about newer, more unique colors
*Interesting theme/packaging
*New formula/product that promises to solve a problem
Oooh good question! My coloring is so cool-toned that I get excited whenever a product has the right undertones for me. It doesn’t happen often enough!
Totally agree! If i see a new nude lippie that’s cool-toned for example, i immediately think, “well i HAVE to get that because who knows when another cool-toned nude will be made again?” 😀
1. Brands – I’m brand loyal and I always like to see my favorite brand’s idea or twist of whatever is trending. I like keeping an eye on the calendar the for new release dates.
2. Packaging, maybe – I’m a sucker for luxe packaging.
Two major factors can make, or break a decision to buy a product.
1.) Are the shades ones that I will actually use, actually flatter my coloring?
2.) Reviews! How well does it come through reviews. Yours, and a few other honest bloggers/ vloggers experience while using the product, how the product was reviewed, how did the swatches appear?
These are some of the major questions I’ll ask myself. Another factor is definitely cost! Especially price per ounce vs. how unique or limited the product of interest is.
Sometimes, it’s the brand that makes me wait for a new product. Also, when a product sells out fast!
I guess the general pre-launch buzz it creates 🙂
Seeing it on Temptalia and being impressed by the swatches and review. That gets me interested! ?
Hate to say it, but I’m a sucker for packaging – anything new, innovative, or just flat-out aesthetically pleasing is going to be mine, even sometimes when the product itself isn’t all that great. I first fell victim to this in the 80s with Maybelline’s Dial-A-Lash (anybody ?) but never looked back. I’ve fallen hard for the cushion compact, swirled products in clear bottles, suspended beads/bubbles, powder pearls, ombre pans, and intricate overlay sprays that disappear perhaps 1/2 a centimeter into the product. It’s not *all* bad, though – I was drawn to the Hourglass Modernist eyeshadow palettes, and they are fantastic, but have to admit I bought my first just because of the way the shadows were swirled together in a way that evoked wind-swept sand on the beach.
Advertising is another biggie – I’ve purchased many things because the glossy photos in magazine made it impossible to resist. Case in point were the Lancome Rouge in Love and Baume in Love campaigns with Emma Watson – she sold the H*ll out of those products, and I’m happy I purchased them. Right now I’m trying to wait patiently for the new MAC Star Trek collection to arrive, and that’s based solely on the incredibly cool cartoon-like poster and my love of Star Trek ! The products are almost an afterthought for me, though I won’t be buying, I swear, if there’s truly nothing that’s a match for me. Well, maybe one green lipstick, but after that I’m done !
Beauty blogs, this one especially (Hello, Christine !) have been a wonderful addition to my decision making process. The exhaustively extensive photos, swatches, and real-life looks here are make or break for me now as I’m trying to cut back on my beauty habit and buy only things I’m going to really use and love. Temptalia is doing all of the “worth it/not worth it” research for me ! There are other beauty websites that leave me face palming over horrendously applied (or practically nonexistent !) makeup, grainy photographs, and swatches done on unprimed skin in bad lighting, but this site, and a handful of others (Hello, Manny Mua !) are my go-to source for products that not only look good, but will look good on ME.
Happy Wednesday to one and all ! 🙂
Track record of brand, interesting packaging, unique color palette, whether the shade(s) look like something I will be able to wear, uniqueness of product, and sometimes price (although less influential than the other factors). More recently, as I’ve rededicated myself to my blog, I also consider whether the product is something my readers may be interested in as well as whether I feel I can contribute something significant to the conversation about the product. Like you Christine, I’ve recently bought products because my readers have expressed an interest in them and not so much because I’ve thought I’ve wanted them. Some have surprised me though so it’s been a win-win.
Your reviews to see if its worth the hype.
If it’s a unique color and good formula. Like I still get hyped over blue lipstick because even though it’s getting more popular it’s still not super common to find one that’s a good formula.
Also cool/unique packaging is a factor in if I get hyped over something, but I’m not going to buy a bad product or stalk a website for an ultra-LE product just for cool packaging.
* Cool toned to neutral
* dry skin friendly
* not exorbitantly priced
*Cruelty Free
Uniqueness. If I can look at an upcoming release and not think oh no, not another (fill in the blank) I will give it a chance.
Initially, the shades offered, whether it’s a brand I like, if it’s innovative, how much use I think I’d get from it, and the packaging. Later, photos, swatches, and good reviews from trusted sources (like Temptalia).
I don’t know if it’s from my being sick and tire these last few weeks, but I feel like lately I’m not getting as excited as I used to. Too many items are proving too hard to procure, or turn out to be mediocre quality, or just too similar to a gazillion other things I own.
What interests me most in new collections is the colour combinations and quality of the finishes – particularly in eye shadows and lipsticks. I love cool toned eye shadows and those interest me the most.
With foundations it is the range of shades and delivery of at least one of their promises…..
It is important too that it rates well here…..
I always read reviews about the product. Does it really do what its supposed to do? Also will I love it and then they discontinue the product.? What you Christine and all the bloggers have to say about it. Do I really need it? (of course I need all the products lol). Also I hate to say this, but the way the makeup is packaged also comes into play, because if it is a makeup with poor workable application, it will turn me off. I hate it when you purchase makeup and you have a hard time opening it,or putting the covers back on them. I am interested in the new Synchro Liquid foundation on see on here. Any new reviews are appreciated.
I get excited about eyeshadow and palette releases from brands I know and love. I also look forward to the Guerlain Meteorite releases and the introduction of new cosmetic brands or innovative products. I love seeing both cute and elegant packaging, but I rarely purchase products based on packaging alone… at least not at full price!
I’m actually not that keen on luxe packaging and something totally, absolutely new. I find Guerlainesque packaging to just take up too much space and be really wasteful, plus I’m in my early twenties and they seem really dated to me. I also find that something that might genuinely be a very innovative idea probably isn’t the best iteration of it (cf. the first run of liquid matte lipsticks).
Obviously it’s great to have first-mover companies out there who are pioneering formulas and finishes, but they don’t need my support – there are plenty of people out there who’ll snap everything up. So I look out for something that comes out when the hype for a certain variety of product has already peaked, because I’m hoping that the slower movers have taken that time to look at what the early formulas have failed to do, and solved those issues. Plus at that point there will be lots more information out there with cooler-headed reviews, swatches, dupes, etc. Case in point: the Laura Mercier Velour Lovers.
That said, sometimes a company will just knock it out of the park the first go with everyone scrambling after it afterwards, but I’d rather wait around for that to be confirmed than get more sub-par stuff. No FOMO.
