What makes a new release standout for you?
I like seeing a good mix of promotional images, live models/applications, swatches, and a good color story or theme (names and the like). I want to see the product performing well and see shades/finishes that aren’t overdone.
Attractive shade(s) that are different from anything I own (especially if it’s mostly mattes); pretty packaging that is also very functional; and, of course, an A+ rating on Temptalia.
I don’t care too much about shade names, unless they’re really sleazy. I don’t want to be uncomfortable telling someone the name of a product if asked. (“I’m wearing Dirt Bag on my eyes and Hoochie on my lips.”)
In order for it to resonate with me, it must have a color story/schematic that makes sense to me and also intrigues me. The quality MUST be there. Advertising doesn’t usually grab me as much as seeing swatches of the products done by those whom I trust. This, because I took courses in graphic art during HS, so I know what’s going on there!
The colours must appeal to me and preferably the design/package must be classy, sophisticated or innovative and not gimmicky. Also, I need to see swatches on skin of similar tone as mine and preferably indoor/outdoor swatches. The lights used for the swatches change the shade and this is true especially for lipsticks.
The color scheme is everything for me and then the packaging and design sounding the product. I’m pretty much an eyeshadow palette person, so there has to be a palette. Anything else is extra for others 😉
Oops, I meant “surrounding”. Also, I forgot to mention, like Nancy, quality is a definite requirement, but I usually don’t know that until I come here or read a number of trusted reviews.

A cohesion that makes sense whether in terms of colors, packaging, a ‘feel’ or theme, etc. It needs to offer something I don’t have but that would work on me. Quality, quality, quality. Availability — I need to be able to see it in store and it needs to be around for awhile (if LE, then it needs to be on the shelves for more than 10 days).
Excellent products in shades that I would use, a B+ or more rating from you Christine, and a small collection.
I’m more sensitive to packaging than I like to admit. Great packaging gets my attention first.
Childish or subversive packaging doesn’t appeal to me–enough with rainbows and imaginary creatures. Humour, in good taste, I appreciate.
I do love delicate (looking) packaging, pretty, lacy, pink, shimmery facades on makeup, but ultimately a poor review won’t sell me on it.
The manufacturers must do a good job of showing application on quick video and images of swatches on different skin tones, don’t skimp on that aspect. The more images and methods of application I can see, the better!
