We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Depends on my emotions, how much I prepped to buy or not before going to a store, finances, and if the item is unique enough. I’d say lately 60-40 in favor of no purchase.
I rarely impulse-buy anymore. If I see something that looks good when I’m shopping, I’ll look up ratings on my phone in the store before I buy it. Temptalia has saved me from many bad purchases!
I second that – Temptalia reviews have helped a lot! It’s pretty seldom that I impulse buy. I’m usually planning out purchases, saving items I’m interested in on wish lists, etc. Not too sure it’s working for me since I’m still Rouge at Sephora though lol.
I’d say about 75%/25%. Meaning when I impulse purchase the majority turns out to be a fail. But that 25% are things I really love and never would have bought except through an impulse purchase. That balances out the fails for me!
Actually quite good! This because I mainly plan my purchases in advance, whether on sale or not. Sometimes to a fault even. Like, I now wish I would have bought the PMG x Star Wars MTHRSHP Duo instead of only Dark Galaxy. So then, there are times when my planning works against me, too.
I impulsively purchase them! So I think the success rate is 100%!
No? That’s not what you meant? Well….
Lolololol.
Ha, ha! Great answer!
When I succumb to impulse purchases, it’s usually because something catches my attention that I think will be “perfect” to enhance a look–be it makeup or outfit. Because I view it as an accessory, I don’t really care if I only use it a few times.
I rarely make impulse purchases, as I really want to document on ingredients (at least) before purchasing.
When I impulse buy something it’s mostly a product that I have would have probably purchased, but I didn’t need at that point in time and some kind of deal or a store visit made me impulse buy it on the spot. So the success rate is usually pretty high.
I would say it’s about 85% – 90% no purchase for me, mainly because the shades are not to my liking, the price is too expensive and I already have dupes for the shades I like (thanks to your wonderful dupe list Christine).
However, every now and again I do make an impulse buy – such as the Flower Beauty Natural Golden palette half price at a budget beauty retailer. But it is pretty rare. And occasionally I will purchase lipsticks that I like and have either seen them rated well here on Temptalia or have purchased them before.
I rarely impulse purchase makeup in general; I’ll usually add it to a wishlist and read some reviews, then wait for a sale if I still want the item after the research and waiting. That being said, my high-end impulse purchases usually work out (because I have to feel really strongly about something to not wait for an Ulta coupon on Sephora bonus event), whereas my drugstore impulse purchases work out maybe 2/3 of the time (I’m more willing to pick something up on a whim when the price point is lower without waiting to think on it). But even at a drugstore price point, I’ll wait for a sale or coupon about 75% of the time. I hate paying full price for things!
I don’t make a lot of impulse purchases. Usually I do pretty well we I do, though. Most of my impulse buys are drug store lipsticks or something like that. Very rarely do I impulse buy higher end stuff. I’d say 90-95% of the ones I make work out for me. I’m well enough versed that I can make educated impulse buys. lol
pretty well *when* I do
Past disappointment plus a general desire to be more conscientious about generating waste (though ultimately the brand is most responsible) keeps true impulse purchasing in check. Black Friday this year was shameful. Even so, checking the Temptalia dupe matrix against my vanity saved me from a number of palettes despite the lowered prices (aside: as someone who does computational work I’m curious about how that’s generated i.e., is there any machine learning involved?). It also helps that there is very little new under the sun.
I do impulse buy but also have background info on the brand. I think I am reasonably successful. Much better than 50/50.
I’m really bad when it comes to impulse buying. It’s generally a lipstick from a brand like Maybelline or any other available at the supermarket. It only happens when I must buy something like shampoo and walk by the makeup counters. 🙂
That said, I am getting better and the last lipstick I bought was one of the “For You” lipsticks, and I like it a lot.
I pretty much know what I like, so it’s about 98%. Occasionally, I get a dud, but even then, usually it had plenty of ok reviews. The biggest dud that comes to mind was Tarte Toasted, which I could not have seen coming. It got pretty good reviews, and all the Tarte palettes I’ve tried before or since were good to great, so this one was just a fluke.
I usually look at reviews more after I try something for myself, to see if others had similar experiences.
