For me, it’s always been and continues to be dark under-eye circles. As I get older and paler, they are more of a problem than when I was in my 20’s and 30’s and, of course, the area under my eyes has become more sunken as I age and that doesn’t help. I’ve spent a small fortune over the years on under-eye concealers and I’m still searching for the “perfect” one (Cargo’s Blu-Ray concealer was the best of all the ones I’ve ever used but, of course, that one was DISCONTINUED!!!! What else is new?)
I had the same problem, dark circles that worsened with age. I follow the Budget Dermatologist on YT and she recommended Avene’s retinaldehyde eye cream. At first I thought it was bogus, but after a few months, my dark circles are incredibly improved, to the point that on some days I don’t even need corrector. It took a long time (months) but I still am using my first bottle. Good luck if you try it
Age spots! I swear they multiply in my sleep, and at best all I can do is try to cover them up. I’ve used the cider vinegar trick to fade them out but that was a dismal failure, and I’m not keen on skin bleaching or any other such drastic methods, especially not on my face.
Instead, I try to focus on my eyes to draw attention away. I also have really bad dark circles, so once I’ve covered them up with concealer I ‘open up’ the eye area with pale, shimmery shadows which seem to do the trick.
As with others, concealing circles. Dep set and congenital. Approach: overkill. Not with application, but with acquisition. I need an annex to house them. I’ll try the Avene that Zizzie recs, if the color suits.
Hi KJH
Just to clarify, it is an eye cream that you apply at night, it has no color. The whole ‘retinoids’ thing is very confusing and intimidating, and I avoided it for a long time, but the Budget Dermatologist has a fantastic video that explains all the types and how to use them. The important thing is not to use other products at the same time that can increase the chance of an adverse reaction. I use the Retinal cream on my face (saw improvement in just 3 days) and the eye cream on my eyes about 4-5 times a week. I originally thought the eye cream wasn’t doing anything but it is really good, and I will repurchase.
Undereye bags and discoloration and right now I am at a loss.
Unfortunately, I have a few…
1.) Eczema! Those rough, crusty feeling patches drive me bananas. I’m serious. I will oft times gently peel them off before applying makeup.
2.) Large pores on my nose and inner half of my cheeks. The one “primer” that truly works for me isn’t actually even a primer, either. Monostat Anti-chaffing Powder Gel (or is it Gel Powder?). Mine is lost somewhere in all my stuff and I haven’t seen it in months. Probably need to buy another.
Nancy, yep Monostat Anti Chafing in the tube. You could pick it up for about $7.00. It lasted forever and did magic on pores. For years in the 80’s and 90’s it’s all I ever prepped my skin with. It was and I’m sure still is perfection, no white cast, no allergic reaction. Good product.!
Sensory issues! I am autistic and I can’t stand the feeling of heavy matte foundation, heavy volumizing mascara, false lashes, liquid matte lipsticks, sticky primers, etc. I like most of my formulas to be lightweight and balmy so I can barely feel them. Finding formulas that work for me can be really tough. I have a good collection now though!
Liz, I have just started using Flower Beauty’s Serum foundation – it is really lightweight, no scent and has a soft semi matte finish. I only picked it up in our local Chemist because it was on sale at half price and decided to give it a go. I am so glad I did – it’s for days when I want a soft foundation. It maybe something you might like to try.
My long time nemesis has always been eye liner, from the classic cat eye to simply lining my eyes. I never manage to get symmetric results and most tries it’s obvious how imperfect they are. My approach was always that practice makes perfect, but after so many years I have to accept I lack any artistic skills. But my other approach is to search for the best liner tip and formula for my liking. Using brush tips like Physicians Formula Eye Booster or KVD Tattoo Liner helps me a lot with liquid liner.
Recently my biggest issue is that I took antibiotics after my oral surgery, and I haven’t took antibiotics in the past 10 years, at least. My skin suddenly became an oily slick, like I was is highschool… and in the past 6 years, since I moved in California, it was quite dry. No complexion product sits on my skin for more than 3-4 hours. I started taking probiotics and I’ll switch to a matte primer… but I think I’ll just let my skin get through this phase.
My aging skin has suddenly become a LOT drier. Like, a LOT drier. It doesn’t help that I prefer matte finishes to my makeup because the rest of my skin is still pretty matte, so the current glow-y look is NOT working for me. I also have enlarging pores and bad undereye circles like other people, but they aren’t at the point of truly aggravating me yet. I’m 47 and improving my skin care seems to be helping me — thanks to whomever suggested Peach & Lily’s Glass Skin products recently, because they are great! However, some of my matte foundations are — shall we say — less than forgiving at the moment. My favorite foundation — Guerlain’s Lingerie de Peau — has been discontinued. I was able to buy a back-up bottle, but I have also experimented with MAC’s Studio Fix which might be ok. Was using Dior’s High Perfection Matte Foundation, but it’s now too drying. Their current Forever Glow is too….glow-y, I think. *sigh*.
Well skin wise it’s puffy eyes when it’s humid. A real challenge for me anymore is washing my makeup brushes to the point I feel they are really clean, which is rare. So that’s a challenge for me.
I have one particular darker hyperpigmentation spot on my left cheek that I layer with a yellow concealer then a lighter mac concealer then I powder it and spray with a setting spray, this is after I have my sunscreen, primer and foundation on. After a while it starts showing through again. In the mean time I don’t want to use a full cover foundation anymore because they are starting to cake into my smile lines and making my previous small pores look huge. Anything with oil in it slides right off my t zone and makes me look greasy. Whoever said there were “golden years” I would like the definition please!
My biggest beauty related challenge is keeping the fine lines around my mouth (smile lines) and my eyes from getting worse. I use a variety of moisturisers to keep my skin hydrated – my favourites are The Ordinary’s Moroccan Argon Oil, Inkey List’s HA serum, Weleda’s Skin Food and, of course, La Roche Posay’s Ultra Light Sunscreen 50+.
I can relate to all answers to this question! Sometime I think ageing sucks, but it’s better than the alternative.
I would have to say my main challenge are the small, very fine lines under my inner under eye area. I have some darkness under my eyes, but trying to conceal it is so hard as every concealer I’ve tried makes these annoying little lines, well wrinkles, look so much worse.
I have decided that the darkness under the eyes is a better look than creased wrinkly concealer, so I hardly use any product under the eyes, just a tiny bit of foundation, the little that is left after blending it out on the skin.
I will try the eye cream Zizzie mentioned if I can get hold of it. Perhaps it can help a little bit.
Avene wont know what hit them when the sale of this product goes up. 🙂
At 68 the number of problems I have would fill a page. If I had to choose one it would be my age/sun spots. I have battled them for years and haven’t really found anything that helps. I am aware that there are effective treatments but the ones that really work are out of my price range. I do feel that they aren’t bothering me as much as they use to. I would look in the mirror and the only thing I saw were the age spots but now I am more philosophical about them and appreciate that I am alive to complain about them.
