We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! A great lipstick goes on smoothly and stays on well. It doesn’t feather or bleed. It feels lightly hydrating and does not feel thick on the lips. It doesn’t dry to a point where it cracks or is hard to take off. It makes lips look smooth, rather than emphasizing lip lines.
Yes, I forgot all about the feathering/bleeding issue! Another no-no for a lipstick. Plus, what you mentioned about it looking cracked, because that’s not a cute look, either. Living in a dry, hot desert, I’ve even had a few seemingly excellent lipsticks do that to me when I’m having to spend some significant time outdoors.
Everything Seraphine just said. And if it is an unusual color in my preferred colors then all the better.
A lipstick that does not settle into my lip lines or emphasize them, that is moisturizing and creamy and last a few hours.
Comfortable texture is a must, and at this stage in my makeup life, adding something new to my collection is also important. I don’t mind re-applying if the color and formula are what I want.
A great lipstick is one where it glides over my lips, is very creamy and hydrating. It lasts for quite awhile without making my lips feel dry.
Good: Something non-drying, gives me at least 3 hours of decent looking wear (NO *-hole lips!), flattering color and finish.
Great: All of the above, and then some! Wears very nicely for at least 4-6 hours (unless I eat an oily or messy food), gives my face LIFE as in it being an “it” shade for me personally, hydrating even if a tube matte.
A good lipstick has a color that suits me perfectly and is not matte. A great lipstick is very moisturizing, free of fragrances and stays put.
A good lipstick is one in a shade that suits me and feels comfortable on my lips (something creamy) and has an okay-ish wear time. A GREAT lipsticks (read: the now discontinued CRAVING from MAC) is a perfectly flattering colour that isn’t matte, that is hydrating and comfortable, that doesn’t emphasize lip lines, doesn’t travel outside my lips, wears for a really long time without the drying side effects of most matte or long-wear lippies and that fades evenly and flatteringly over time.
The difference between a good lipstick and a great one is whether or not I can reapply without a mirror and if a lip liner is required to prevent feathering.
Good: stays on wear, comfortable and the color is flattering on me.
Great: the above, plus no creasing and doesn’t need touch up (does that exist). Ha!
