Too Faced

They’ve scaled back on their launches over the last few years, which I think has improved the consistency of their releases overall, though they can get too into a theme.

I really like their old school 9 pan eyeshadow palettes. Boudoir eyes was one of my favorites that I panned every shade in (also loved PB&J, Summer Eyes, Sugar Pop, Romantic, etc!). I thought the little slide out cards on the OG ones with different eye looks was a cute touch. Unfortunately, they went away from that format (other than NE mattes) and transitioned into the big chocolate bar style palettes. Their shadows in the chocolate bar style palettes are VERY hit or miss with some being very dry and patchy, a problem I never had with the 9 pans I owned. I don’t mind the scent at all (and find it cute and nostalgic usually), but would prefer the smaller palettes with better quality over something that smells nice! I think they make very good lip glosses and have quite a few now. The Shadow Insurance Glitter Glue is A++ for me and I always use it when I’m planning on wearing a super glittery shadow.

The Born This Way line causes SUCH bad reactions on my skin – I am pretty sure the Coconut Water is the irritating ingredient so I definitely don’t like that! I’ve never had a mascara of theirs work for me (and some sting my eyes) so I avoid their mascaras now.

I’ve got to agree with Lauren about the 9 pan palettes, and also about Boudoir in particular – I have 5 or 6 of the 9-pans and they are all really good (though the original Natural palette did have one shadow that was unusable because of the glitter) – but I remember when Naked came out, it was about the same price but for a larger palette. I do like their shadow palettes for the most part but I loathe how they started adding fragrance just to stick with a “theme”. I got a sample of Born this Way foundation when it first came out and I think it’s probably one of the worst foundations I’ve ever, EVER used.

Also, many years ago, they used to have a really nice pressed powder foundation that I used until I used it up. I probably still have the empty black plastic case somewhere in a drawer. I know they’ve now got one (possibly 2) pressed powder foundation type products that I’ve not tried but I sure miss that one from 10 or so years ago!

Too Faced lost me when they started launching too many products in this fragranced formulas and childish packaging.

As much I dislike all scents in makeup and skincare, anything food related is worse offender. I can stomach a vanilla or a slight cocoa scent, but don’t bring in a fruit basket, a cake shop and a coffee shop.

The launches are almost useless, a mockery at sustainability, poor quality.

I rarely take sides in dramas, but they really did wrong with Nikkie. Sorry, but they are too sketchy as a brand and even when they do good (like the shade ranges) it seems too fake and in for the money, not the general good (but hey, companies are not people). I am still conflicted on this, what they did with Jackie Aina was amazing (would have loved to see similar campaigns with influencers from other background, East and South Asians, Native Americans and Latinos, etc). But it seemed so fake coming from Too Faced… it never seemed right to me.

I do like the Born This Way Line, or at least what was intended at the beginning. The concealer is amazing, shade range very extensive.
Shadow Insurance… another amazing product. But otherwise nothing really impressed me from the brand. They are just… meh…

Like: Very interesting shade combinations, very rich formula in most of their permanent palettes. I loved their OG Créme lipstick formula, but now believe it may be DC’d? Glad that they brought Jackie Aina on board to help them expand their foundation range to be far more inclusive.

DISLIKE (more like HATE): Too Faced adding Sodium Saccharine to almost every single eyeshadow palette! I’m highly allergic to it, as it is a sulfa. I know I’m beating a dead horse here again, but they need to get rid of that ingredient! I would have LOVED to have been able to keep the OG Chocolate Bar Palette, but had to return it due to the absolutely painful and severe reaction my eyes had to it. Never bothered to read the ingredient list prior to purchase, because who would expect to find a flipping artificial sweetener in their eyeshadow? Would have also bought Chocolate Bar Gold had it not been for their infernal sodium saccharine! Damn, I hope someone in their R&D department reads this unwieldy rant and remedies this.

I’m allergic to aloe and I’ve had to give up or pass entirely on so much because of it. And since it’s so prevalent in cosmetics and skincare I’ve become one of those super obsessed, ingredients list reading fiends because it’s either that or burned and flaking skin.

Ooooh, i recently outgrew my allergy to aloe. Still will probably avoid it. How many times has someone said to you ‘Oh, you can’t be allergic to that. It’s natural!’ So are tree pollen and cat hair. Chemical sunscreens are in virtually everything. Even many that say mineral have ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate as well as titanium or zinc. The chem sunscreens drop my temp to 93, another fun reaction. If it weren’t for Covid, I’d take the penicillin challenge. My girl dog is on amoxy now, and i haven’t reacted as i used to when persons up closer were taking it. Allergies do change over time, though some persist.

DISLIKE scented or fragranced products! Chocolate, pumpkin spice, peach – Too Faced has really lost me as a customer for their palettes.

LIKE the silicone-free Hangover primer (though I’m not going to repurchase bc of the scent) and unscented bronzers. I like Sun Bunny for sunny days (it’s too orange otherwise) and I like their discontinued Poreless Bronzer for pale girl winter days. I was super sad they discontinued that last one until I discovered MAC Harmony which is slightly darker but in the same avenue.

There is not much I like about Two Faced. I find their collections to be far too warm and too similar to each other for my liking. Their collections, as you have said Christine, have scaled back in the last few years to concentrate on delivering better quality palettes, but they are still catering to only very warmed toned eyeshadow wearers.
Their shades names range from OK to very smutty and their scented palettes really alienated a lot of potential customers. Their packaging belonged to the overly cute category too.
In Australia, the brand is very, very expensive so every shade has to count, which it doesn’t. Their use of glitter puts me off too.

LIKE: They have some really cute themes and packaging. They added a matte foundation to the line-up. They still have a lot of great products: Shadow Insurance; the Natural Face Palette; Hangover Replenishing Face Primer; their bronzers; the mini palettes (Sugar Cookie and Hot Buttered Rum are amazing). I actually like most of their larger, scented palettes such as the Chocolate Bar line, Gingerbread, etc..

DISLIKE: Lousy — nearly nonexistent — customer service for their website. Releases can be hit or miss quality, especially in regards to eyeshadow formulas. Their winter holiday palettes are redundant and poorer quality. Their themes and naming often leave cheeky behind and go straight to tacky and trying too hard. They run some themes into the ground (cough*Peach*cough). They discontinued some of my favorite products, such as the Love Flush blushes, Cocoa Powder Foundation, and La Creme lipsticks.

Like: they’re cruelty free!

Dislike: quite literally every single other thing about them. Everything they do is just so… cringe. The packaging, the “themes”, the abundance of synthetic fragrance. Gross. It reminds me of the little makeup sets sold in drugstores for young girls, with garish colours and bad formulas. I shop cruelty-free, but I would be embarrassed, as a woman in her mid-thirties, to be seen pulling one of their products out of my bag.

I like that Too Faced can make a very nice pink shadow with golden sparkle and it shows up in most of their palettes. I dislike the fragrances other than chocolate.
