Shimmery Lipstick

I find that frosted/metallic shimmer tends to emphasize my lip lines and can be harder to wear without a gloss on top. I love some pearl, though, typically with a more luminous finish.

Everything you wrote above, Christine, applies to me also. My actual lips are still quite smooth at 62 y.o., but I still don’t go in for full-on metallic lipsticks as they can seriously “date” a person!

I just love how some microshimmer in a formula light enough to let it shine through can add dimension to a lip. So flattering. Pearly shades in satin-to-gloss finishes should be more common!

While I don’t like shimmer in general, I like it even less in lip products. I can’t say it’s necessarily about emphasizing texture and fine lines, or looking too informal or childish, it’s just not for me.

But it’s somehow something I love to see in editorial looks, in a beautiful fantasy makeup.

I used to loathe frosted lipsticks because I remember how they looked in the 60’s and 70’s (garish, harsh, unflattering). Then I found MAC New York Apple (which I think is now discontinued). It’s the only shimmery/frost lipstick I own and I love it because MAC always seemed to have the knack for developing shimmers that are flattering (their Veluxe Pearl eyeshadows were just one early example of how to do it right).

I will use a full on metallic if I’m doing a specific look, and for sure I’ll work one in for a Halloween look. Otherwise I tend to use them as a topper for some of my lipsticks, just a light hand to add another dimension to my lips, because honestly I love shiny, glittery everything!

I’ve always worn more creme formulas in both lipsticks and glosses, but I’ve also had some shimmers that I’ve loved. For me, I actually felt that they didn’t emphasize my lip lines as much as cremes could, and were sometimes easier to wear without liner too, as opposed to my creme lipsticks and glosses. They could really be fun too, and often worked great for an “evening” makeup look. However, I’m 48 now, and as much as I hate to have to admit this, I find them to be aging on me these days. A very fine shimmer or pearl can still work for me, but a full-on shimmer no longer does.

I love shimmery lipstick. It’s all I wear. I got started ages ago with a Revlon color called Platinum Lame. Just a beautify bronzy / rose shimmer or frost or pearl. There are some Lancôme beauties you swatched a week ago with lovely shimmer. Pat McGrath and Ford do beautiful pearl lipsticks and MAC used to but MAC needs a new lipstick director to bring lovely shades to their game again.

I love shimmery lipsticks, shimmery but not very metallic or so frosted it looks as if my lips took a bath in a glitter factory.
I like metallic lipsticks, but it can look odd if the colour isn’t right for my colouring, as with all lipsticks, of course, but even more, I think with metallic shades.
Pearly lipsticks are so lovely, I think.
So what don’t I like? When sparkles from the lipstick suddenly appears outside of the lips, yes it’s happened. I also don’t like when I can feel the glitter on the lips, or if it feels scratchy when applied.

LIKE: They’re comfortable to wear, they add dimension to a lip look, and can make lips look fuller.

DISLIKE: Very light colored ones often have so-so coverage or can emphasize lip lines. I’m not usually a fan of frosty shades.

It really depends on the particular lipstick. I’m just old enough to remember the 80’s style frosted lipsticks and whenever I see shimmer that’s where my mind goes lol. Still I have a few favorites that are shimmers or metallics. I’m comfortable with bold color but bold texture tends to put me back a bit, so I prefer my lipsticks to be a bit on the more subtle side when it comes to metallics, shimmers, etc.

I think they can be really fun, but I think shimmery lip glosses are much more flattering. Super frosty ones look dated, too.
