What do you enjoy most about beauty?

I love that it’s a way to play with color and texture, see how they come together.
It washes off, so it’s never that much of a risk, and it’s one of the few ways I can be remotely creative/artsy.

I like that it is unique to the eye of the beholder. What works for me may or may not work for someone else and vice versa. But it’s okay because we can all celebrate our own version of beauty.

I like that beauty as fluid and that there will always be options for every preference. What I like about makeup and aesthetics and artistic expression as far as makeup now was not the same 10 years ago, maybe even five years ago. But I still have plenty of options and thanks to such a large and growing industry, I don’t think the ability to choose or have options will ever run out.

I just like how it makes me look better and feel better. Taking care of my skin has allowed me to arrive at “old age pension” age with people guessing that I’m a good 25 years younger (that’s sun protection for you!) and as for makeup, I love how it makes me look – more polished and put together, brighter and livelier. In the same way I wouldn’t go to work or out to meet friends in my pyjamas, I wouldn’t face the world without “dressing” my face in a similar way (except in case of an emergency, when I would leave the house in pj’s and with no makeup)

Fair warning: I’m going to be a little heavy answering this question. There are many, many women in the world that don’t have access to the products we’re so fortunate to have. I see many of these women looking 60 when they’re only 30 years old. So, what do I like best about our beauty products? Everything. We’re blessed.

Such a great answer, Anne. Because of the students I teach (many of them Syrian refugees and, before that, refugees from conflicts in Somalia, the former Yugoslavia, etc.), when I meet their mothers and aunts, who are half my age, it hits home to me that not only have these women not had access to the luxuries we take for granted (like food, medical care, etc.) but the stress of trying to care for their families and live through some of the most frightening and difficult challenges has aged them. Not only have they not had access to a good face cream, they’ve not had access to safe and secure places to live for themselves and their families.

That I can change my look every day or several times a day, for that matter. I can go from minimal everyday makeup to just run to the grocery store to a dramatic look for evening, and everything in-between. It’s fun to try different eyeshadow shades and techniques, and to plan my look to coordinate with whatever I’m wearing, especially fun for evening and special occasions. I love a dark smokey eye for evening….gives me the opportunity to kick it up a notch lol. Plus…I do love the pretty packaging, although I won’t buy beauty products just for packaging. I’m a sucker for anything girly.

Looking better helps me in business, in my mood, in my confidence, and where skin care is concerned it’s a way to feel a little healthier. Also, it’s fun and creative. And an enjoyable to do things just for myself.

As I was growing up I was aware that many of my family members, mother, sister and brother, were all very artistic. They painted, drew and had a natural eye for color and composition. I always felt that the creative gene passed me by. Later, after the birth of my daughter, I started scrapbooking and found that I had a knack for it. From there I started branching out in my makeup artistry and like many, I have developed a love for it. I love that I start each day with a new canvas and have the opportunity to create whatever I want and then wash it off if it doesn’t work out.

Doing makeup relaxes me and is a way to be at least a little creative every day. I like to experiment with color (not that you’d know it from my “neutral with pop of color on lower lashline” look today) and do other things people my age (late 30s) are told we can’t do, like wearing unconventional lipstick to go grocery shopping.

I love playing with eyeshadows! It’s so insulting when people tell me I wear makeup because of society’s expectations for women. Would I be playing with colorful eyeshadows and eyeliner when I’m staying home all day if I didn’t really love it? 🙂

I love that if I feel tired, dragged out, defeated … I don’t have to look it. I also love that it gives me an outlet (makeup, specifically) for indulging my love of color when I’m feeling stuck artistically.

From a skincare/beauty perspective, I love that I’m not (to some degree) shackled by my age, genetics, environment, etc. I have options to improve my appearance, keep my skin healthier to avoid complications, and to generally take care of myself — feeling very blessed.
