What are the first few things you'll notice when trying out a new lipstick?
I tend to notice the opacity first, followed by whether it catches on lip texture/lines.

Does it emphasize my lip texture and lines, is it creamy and moisturizing.
Texture, if it’s creamy or dry.
Scent and texture.
How nicely and smoothly it glides/swipes on (or not). Its pigmentation level and/or any tendency towards patchiness/splotchiness, by this I mean that if it’s meant to be sheer or semi-sheer, does it build up nicely on itself without bunching up? And, for mattes, creams and satins, I do desire full, even opacity.
How well it lasts, as in, not only how many hours can it go before I need to touch it up, but also whether it wears off evenly or whether it leaves the dreaded “butt-hole” effect!
And of equal importance: how COMFORTABLE it is during wear time.
Texture and if it emphasizes my lip lines/imperfections
How easy is to apply and get a precise lip contour (I hate lipsticks that don’t allow you to get a precise application, especially at the corners), if they are too slippery or too shiny, how well it covers my natural mauvy lip color.
Definitely how moisturizing it is – that is the key to comfort for me. After that, slip – how it feels, does it move around or is it chalky and not budging.
When trying out a new lipstick – some of the things I notice first are:
Is it creamy and does it glide onto the lips?
Does it have a satin or glossy finish? – absolutely no matte finish!
How long does it last on my lips?
Does it have a scent? – Loathe scented lipsticks
Is it moisturising?
I tend to notice how well it blends in to my actual lips. I don’t know if it’s a texture issue, because I have some heavy lipsticks that blend in just fine, and lighter gloss types that don’t. I don’t like lipsticks that have an odd cast or look like they’re just “sitting there” on my lips. After that, I notice wear time and comfort. Lastly — and this is critical — I notice whether or not I wind up with dry, peeling lips after wear. I do have allergies and sometimes this is the first sign that I’m allergic to something in the lipstick.
