Viseart Dark Matte (04) Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Viseart Dark Matte (04) Eyeshadow Palette
Viseart Dark Matte (04) Eyeshadow Palette ($80.00 for 0.84 oz.) is a mix of darker, more satin to matte shades that range from brown to blue to plum. There were a few eyeshadows that were just average, while there were a few that were exceptionally lovely to work with. The eyeshadows that I had trouble with were workable, even on bare skin, and typically the less pigmented shades were buildable in practice. I was still a little disappointed to see issues in the palette, though, at this price point. The palette can be used to create looks using just the contents, but it does work better when paired with Viseart’s other palettes to bring in more light and mid-tone shades (which is how the palette system is designed to be used).
Dark Matte #1 is a lightly brightened, medium brown with warm, yellow undertones and a semi-matte finish. The color payoff was rich, while the texture was silky and extremely easily blended out on the skin. It wore well for nine hours on me. MAC Uninterrupted (P, $21.00) is darker, brighter. Make Up For Ever S638 Mocha (P, $21.00) is lighter. bareMinerals Yes Please (P, ) is cooler. MAC Terre (Right) (LE, ) is warmer. MAC Clove (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery. Too Faced Truffled (P, $16.00) is darker. Makeup Geek Preppy (P, $5.99) is lighter. Sephora + Pantone Universe Cocoa Brown (LE, ) is lighter, more muted. Sephora + Pantone Universe Carob Brown (LE, ) is lighter. LORAC Undeniable (P, ) is lighter. Hourglass Atmosphere #3 (P, ) is lighter. Hourglass Infinity #4 (P, ) is less shimmery. MAC Mumu (LE, $16.00) is lighter. Givenchy Delicate #2 (P, ) is more shimmery, lighter. MAC Mumu (LE, $16.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Dark Matte #2 is a muted, medium-dark taupe brown with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had so-so pigmentation with a drier, powdery consistency that gave it a more faded appearance. It started to show signs of actual fading after seven and a half hours of wear. Make Up For Ever M558 Dark Taupe (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, cooler. Make Up For Ever M630 Sweet Chestnut (P, $21.00) is darker, warmer. Stila Being (P, ) is warmer. Tarte Eiffel for You (LE, ) is darker. LORAC Brown (LE, ) is lighter. Urban Decay Dare (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery. Tarte Dreamer (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker. Sephora + Pantone Universe Cocoa Brown (LE, ) is warmer. MAC Aromatic (P, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker. LORAC Unedited (P, ) is darker. Tarte Sweet Tea (LE, ) is lighter, warmer. Becca Ombre Nudes #4 (P, ) is darker. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Lover #7 (LE, ) is lighter. Too Faced Cashmere Bunny (P, $16.00) is lighter. Buxom Big Spender (P, $12.00) is less shimmery, darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Dark Matte #3 is a muted, medium-dark red-toned brown with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had fairly good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that ran a little powdery but didn’t look that way applied. It lasted for eight hours on me. MAC Soft Brown (P, $16.00) is warmer. MAC Beautyburst (LE, $16.00) is darker, more muted. MAC Brown Script (P, $16.00) is darker. Viseart Dark Matte #4 (P, ) is cooler. Guerlain Turandot #3 (LE, ) is darker, cooler. Viseart Dark Matte #4 (P, ) is darker, warmer. ColourPop Hot Tamale (LE, $5.00) is more shimmery, darker. Sephora + Pantone Universe Hot Chocolate (LE, ) is darker. ColourPop Mittens (P, $5.00) is darker. NARS Dolomites (Right) (LE, $24.00) is darker. MAC Amorous Alloy (P, $20.00) is more shimmery. Makeup Geek Cocoa Bear (P, $5.99) is darker. NARS Naiade (P, ) is warmer. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Dark Matte #4 is a muted, medium brown with warm, orange undertones and a satin finish. It had rich, opaque coverage that applied with smooth, even color and blended beautifully on the skin. It showed signs of fading after nine hours of wear. MAC Exposed (LE, $16.00) is darker. Guerlain Les Fauves #2 (LE, ) is darker. Wet ‘n’ Wild To Muse and Carouse #2 (LE, $2.29) is lighter. theBalm C4 (LE, $16.00) is lighter, warmer. Makeup Geek Cocoa Bear (P, $5.99) is darker. Buxom Filthy Rich (P, $12.00) is lighter. Zoeva Freshly Toasted (P, ) is darker. Viseart Dark Matte #3 (P, ) is darker, warmer. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Dark Matte #5 is a muted, medium-dark plum with warm, red undertones and a mostly matte finish. The texture felt a little soft and dry, so it had some powderiness to it, but it wasn’t too difficult to apply or blend on the skin. It wore well for eight and a half hours. Chanel Delicatesse #4 (LE, ) is more shimmery. MAC Deep Damson (P, $16.00) is darker. Laura Mercier Kir Royal (P, $22.00) is darker. Chanel Quadrille #1 (LE, ) is lighter. Sleek MakeUP Stallion (LE, $9.99) is darker, cooler. MAC Sketch (P, $16.00) is darker, more muted. Viseart Dark Matte #6 (P, ) is darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Dark Matte #6 is a muted, medium-dark eggplant purple with subtle, warmer reddish tones and a semi-matte finish. The texture on this shade was a little firmer and drier, which showed in its application (fussy and harder to blend) and color payoff (semi-opaque). It lasted for eight and a half hours, though. bareMinerals Nightcap (P, ) is darker, brighter. MAC Palace Pedigreed (LE, $16.00) is lighter, brighter. Guerlain Boulevard du Montparnasse #6 (LE, ) is more shimmery. MAC Hyperviolet (LE, $18.00) is darker. Kat Von D Fur Elise (P, ) is darker. Dark Matte #7 is a brightened, light-medium orange with warm, yellow undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had good color coverage that went on evenly and smoothly as the texture was silky and blendable. This shade wore well for eight and a half hours on me. Illamasqua Vulgar (P, ) is brighter. MAC Rule (P, $16.00) is darker. Disney by Sephora Rajah (LE, ) is more shimmery, darker. Make Up For Ever M726 Sienna (P, $21.00) is lighter. Wet ‘n’ Wild A Regular at the Factory #3 (LE, $2.29) is brighter. Ardency Inn Tangerine (P, $21.00) is lighter. Makeup Geek Chickadee (P, $5.99) is lighter. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Dark Matte #8 is a brightened, medium-dark orange with hints of rusty red and a satin finish. It had fantastic pigmentation with a silky, smooth, and blendable texture. The color lasted for nine hours before fading. Kat Von D Cleopatra (P, ) is darker. Buxom It Crowd (P, $12.00) is darker, brighter. Kat Von D Mandala (LE, ) is darker, brighter. Tarte Le Cordon Bleu (LE, ) is brighter. First 15 dupes listed, see more: See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Dark Matte #10 is a deepened, muted navy blue with a satin finish. It was intensely pigmented with a slightly firmer consistency, but luckily, this just made it apply more intensely while still maintaining its blendability on the skin. It lasted for ten hours and left a slight stain behind, so you might want to use a primer with this one to avoid that. bareMinerals Lagoon (LE, $14.00) is warmer. Urban Decay Heroine (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery, darker. Giorgio Armani Minuit (02) (P, $38.00) is more shimmery, lighter. Make Up For Ever S226 Abyssal Blue (P, $21.00) is warmer. Inglot #389 (P, $6.00) is darker, more muted. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Dark Matte #11 is a muted, medium-dark cool-toned green with a semi-matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff that was fairly buildable on the skin, and it blended without too much trouble, but it was on the powdery side. It started to fade after nine hours of wear. Giorgio Armani Emeraude (04) (P, $38.00) is more shimmery, darker. MAC Green Room (LE, $16.00) is brighter, cooler. Giorgio Armani Iridescent Jade (LE, ) is more shimmery, lighter. bareMinerals Velvet Emerald (LE, $14.00) is lighter. MAC Bottle Green (P, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

I think these swatched really nicely for such dark, matte shades. I am really kind of bothered by these palettes being set up to only really work if you buy more than one. I understand they are originally intended as a pro product, but it is a turn-off to have a company suggest you need multiple $80 products to get a range of shades for a single look.
That being said, the look you created with this palette is very lovely, Christine!
Oh, definitely! They did pretty well given how so-so mattes can be.
I do agree with you – as a consumer product, it’s not a compelling reason to start buying $80 palettes!
Love your eye shadow look, the colours in this palette are exactly what I’m looking for.
Thanks for the review!
Thanks, Areej!
Wow, they weren’t kidding when they named this Dark Matte Shadows. The eye look you created is dramatic and gorgeous! Very hard to find an all matte palette with an A- rating. I think this would pair beautifully with the satin shades from Paris Nudes, which I have. But I do wish you can get a complete look without paying $80 for another palette. But then again, with 12 shadows, this breaks down to about $6.70 per shadow, which is pretty good
I hear ya! I think these would be more compelling if they were more mixed for consumers.
Where can I purchase this palette? I LOVE the colors! I have the Bridal palette and I think this would work well with it since these shadows are matte.
Muse Beauty is where I bought mine.
Thanks!
Are some of the swatches off? I’m reading this on my phone but it seems like some of the bullets/swatches are off? This is a lovely palette, though. It’s out of my price range but I’m eager to purchase an all matte palette =)
I’m not sure what you mean – bullets? I checked the swatches, and I didn’t see anything amiss.
Strange, indeed! After I submitted my question, the problem fixed itself? No worries, though! Good review, per usual =)
I manually removed it after your comment, but I have no idea why it happened (it’s an automated output of the dupes as I’ve entered them so I can paste all the links in neatly).
You look like you had fun with this one! Your eye looks AMAZING! A kalaidascope on the outside and in within the eye itself! Stunning, Christine! 🙂
Thanks, Lotus!
Okay! I am not kidding but I seriously let out a gasp when I saw your eye look. No words! Do you mind telling me what eye brushes you used for the look? Thanks Christine!
MAC 239.
Oh man, I love what you did with this palette for your eye look, Christine! It’s banging!
On the other hand, I am now feeling rather conflicted and somewhat ambivalent towards buying this particular palette. It would seem that I do own decent dupes for perhaps 1/3-1/2 of these shades. Now I wonder whether just putting another MAC quad together containing Bottle Green, Soba, Deep Damsom, and Rule would fill those gaps? UD Heroine and MAC Indian Ink are 2 that I own that both seem to outdo #9 and #10. And you know how I lurrve my Brown Script and Soft Brown! $80 for an inconsistent, but beautiful palette… or another quad??? Idk?
Bottle Green, Soba, and Deep Damson are all really nice shades, and Rule is pretty n ice, too.
An A- overall isn’t bad. I think I can live with a few C+’s since I have some good dupes for the 2 shades anyway. This is going on the wish list!
It’s definitely quite good for mattes and darker mattes at that! The only downside is that it IS $80, so you know, you really want them to all be good 🙂
To be honest, I’m just glad it’s also $80 Canadian dollars through Sephora because our exchange rate is about .80 compared to USD! So I’m basically saving $20! ☺️
I wish this was less expensive! I always wear primer so I’m sure it would be an A in my book (if not for the price).
Totally understand 🙂
I looooove this eye look. So dark and mysterious!
Thanks, Ginny!
That’s is the most beautiful eye look i have seen you create!
Thank you, Trina!
Man alive, do I lOve what you did with these!
Thank you, Vijaya!
Ahh! All of these perfect things! (Must make sure can buy champagne pop highlighter!)
Plenty of new stuff at any given moment for sure.
OMG this is GORGEOUS!!!!
Glad ya liked it, Connie!
Holy cow those shadows totally bring out the color of your eyes! Gorgeous eye look Christine! Your eye look really makes me want to purchase this palette!
Thanks, Sae!
I just love the mix of colors here! There’s a lot of nice crease shades and I spot a couple nice transition shades too. This seems to be a pretty solid palette
This will be very nice on darker skin tones, I think, because there are more transition/crease shades that’ll work!
This looks like a great palette for fall! 😀
Agreed!
This just screams 90s to me.
Hopefully that’s a good thing!
I have to say, I really like the colors in this one.
Yay!
I really want this but the price…I want to get the MUFE Artist shadows which I think are a better buy…lol…but I do love the orange shades in the palette…love the eye look
I think you can get more shades for your $80 with these (I think it’ll be $88 for 6 MUFE eyeshadows), though the MUFE ones are probably a bit bigger in size.
A good collection of colours in this. I find it tempting.
I love the dramatic look you did, using this palettee. Just stunning!
Thank you, Helene!
The green and the navy are lovely additions to the palette, but I also think that there are a few too many similar colours – eg the oranges. For matte lovers, this would be a great palette.
They could have substituted one of the orange/browns for sure.
I totally agree, my favorites in this are the Navy and the Green but there are way too many shades of orange
Thanks for reviewing and showing the swatches. I have been staking the Sephora site waiting on this palette.
My pleasure, Tiff!
Wow. These are such gorgeous colours. It’s a very autumnal mix, but there’s a great variety and the world needs more richly coloured mattes.
It definitely gives off that autumn-y vibe, Kate!
Ooooh, I hadn’t heard about this new palette. As a matte queen, I will have to get this at some point. I’m sad that the gorgeous plum gets a C rating (and also the brown), but I would probably chance it anyway.
Hopefully you can make ’em work!
I’m not happy that there are a couple of “duds” and this one is not on my “must-have” as far as the Vise art palettes go. But,after seeing the swatches,I feel like if I venture into the Viseart world, it would be wise to get this one if I could eventually. Then..POW ..this eye look Christine, you never cease to amaze ! I was looking at this palette and thinking,,”way too dark and I would surely need other shades”. This look is smoldering! I love it! I don’t think I could wear it. But, I sure wish I could. I love how these shadows look like they were just smoothed over.
Aww, thank you, Nicole! 🙂
The look you created with this palette is FAB-U-LOUS!
This is the Viseart palette I want!
Thank you!
As others have also commented, some of these have a lovely finish for matte shadows – they don’t look dry or flat but seem more satiny. But I’d never purchase a palette like this because it’s not a “stand alone” and, therefore, not practical for travel or even for every day as I’d need to pull out something with some lighter shades in it. That’s why I like the KvD new palette (my only “all matte” palette) – it has a wide shade range that includes highlight/light colours.
I can understand that! If you want to travel with these, you’ll have to take two, which may be fine for some but for those wanting to travel lightly, probably not!
Just an FYI…this Dark Matte (04) palette replaced what was Dark Matte (09). The 09 palette had a bright matte white and more oranges, but otherwise they are similar. I’ve been toying with the idea of purchasing 04 so I came across the two different versions during my on-line searches. I have Neutral Matte (which IMO should be called Warm Mattes) and Cool Mattes…so I am thinking I should add Dark Mattes, too!
Thanks for the heads up, Christina! I haven’t seen Dark Matte (09) available at all – only 04!
Wow, Christine, that eye look! <3 This really is a loooovely matte palette! I'd LOVE to get my greedy matte eyeshadow-craving hands on it, haha.
Thank you, Melissa!
Eh, not for me.
Easy skip!
I absolutely LOVE this palette…despite #2 and #9…all the other colors made up for them. My favorite color is #12…so unique and gorgeous. This palette pairs well with the sultry nudes. Your eye look is stunning!!! I’m going to try it this weekend….absolutely STUNNING!
Thank you, Naila!
Just now reading this one and I have to chime in about your eyelook here – I literally did a double take its soooo gorgeous! You really know your way around a palette Christine!
Thank you, Bonnie!
I just bought this palette with the VIB Rouge coupon, which made each shadow about 6 dollars. For how smooth they look, that is totally worth it to me. Plus, I have been looking for the perfect dark plums/reds/greens for winter, I love pairing those matte shades with gold glitter.
Nice!
Does anybody know if “MUSE beauty.PRO” are original merchandise? They have this deal for 2 Viseart palette with 3 brushes for $128. Which is a really good deal. I just don’t want it to be to good to be true kind of thing.
Yes, it is!
