Urban Decay Naked Skin Ultra Definition Pressed Finishing Powder ($34.00 for 0.26 oz.) is supposed to be a “silky, weightless finishing powder with a luminous, demi-matte Naked finish.” It’s designed to set your makeup and reduce shine, so it can be used after you’ve applied your foundation initially as well as later on during the day as a touch-up powder.

Urban Decay recommends Light for shades 0.5 through 3.0; Medium Light for shades 2.0 through 4.0; Medium for shades 4.5 through 6.5; Medium Dark for shades 6.0 through 8.0; and Dark for shades 8.0 through 12.0. I used Medium over 4.0 in the photos, for reference. I applied it using Urban Decay’s Good Karma Finishing Brush. The texture is soft, incredibly finely-milled, and feels like a silky powder as it goes onto the skin. Applied over Urban Decay’s Naked Liquid Foundation, it made the resulting finish more matte and definitely more “blurred.”

It boosted the wear of the liquid foundation by another hour, so I was able to get eight and a half hours of wear before my t-zone started to show some fading, which started to be noticeable after nine and a half hours of wear. If used to touch-up, then the foundation looks mostly intact even after eleven hours of wear. I liked how well it softened the look of my normal-to-dry skin without appearing powdery, but I did miss some of the subtle luminosity of the liquid foundation, so I might opt to use this more as a touch-up powder a few hours into wear (personally).  The powder was supposed to have a luminous and demi-matte finish, but it read rather matte when I tested it.

Dude, I was like, did I have them backwards? This was when I was still photographing them! I was like Medium Light looks lighter than Light! I think some of the fair skin tones can get away with the lightest shade since it’s sheer/translucent, but the darker end of the spectrum could use more variety. I’d like to see more neutral undertones.

Oh, I so wish I waited a bit. I just picked up a setting powder by Chantecaille and yeah I’m not all that enthused over it for its price point and the first ingredient is..you guessed it.. Talc! This is a good price for something I generally use just a very little of and would probably last me for quite some time. While I do not like an entirely matte face, with the freakazoid and disgustingly wet humid weather we are having, I’ll take matte over the shine factory that lately sets up shop on my skin on a daily basis.

Wwendalynne Avatar

not really, I break through it these days in no time and I do not have oily skin, but we are experiencing unbelievable weather with it overwhelmingly wet and humid every day. I like to apply finishing powder very lightly because I do not like a predominately matte finish. Plus, this particular Chantecaille powder is white so again I do not want to use heavily or it pulls too white against my skin. Perhaps I simple chose the wrong option. I went with the Hi Def Perfecting powder and would not buy it again.

Christine Avatar

Ahhh, what a bummer to have paid a lot for something that’s not at all impressive! Sometimes if something is too mattifying initially, I will do a spritz of water (or MAC Fix+ or whatever), which helps bring it back to a natural finish – but I do not have oily skin so it’s possible this negates some of the impact of a finishing powder. It’s just something I do when I’m not testing a foundation/face product, though.

Christine Avatar

It’s very mattifying, so powders like Hourglass and Guerlain give more of an all-over glow as well as blur/soft focus the skin. It can also tint the skin since it’s skin-colored whereas both Hourglass and Guerlain are more translucent, though Hourglass’ shades can tint as well for a couple of the shades. Guerlain’s is less powdery, so it’s great for even drier skin. I assuming you mean Hourglass’ Ambient Powder and Guerlain’s Meteorites, just fyi!

How do you think this performs on its own? Can it be used as a light or sheer powder foundation? Maybelline used to have a a product that was described similarly (a finishing powder available in a few shades), but the texture was so great that I use it as a powder foundation! It was discontinued and I’m still looking for a replacement before I run out of my reserves! Thanks!

Sarah Avatar

Thanks for such in depth, honest reviews! I have a question–not sure if you will know the answer? i usually don’t wear foundation on a daily basis, just concealer and some mac pressed powder. Do you have thoughts on how this would work if it wasn’t used over foundation? Thanks!

Maryanne Avatar

Thanks so much for your wonderful reviews and photos! Do you have any idea when this will be available at Sephora? Hope I didn’t miss a date in the review.

Janeen Avatar

Thank you for reviewing this! I was very curious and was interested in getting this since I own the foundation. On my wishlist it goes 🙂

AmyD Avatar

ooh, i love the idea of tinted finishing powders in theory – i’m nc42-44, and i really can’t get away with wearing translucent finishing powders, they always end up looking pretty ashy on me (even chanel’s poudre universelle libre in the darkest shade) 🙁 the *idea* of these powders sounds great, but looks like the execution may not be ideal – the darkest powder definitely looks too yellow for me.

bedk Avatar

I wish they would start a recycling program like BACK TO MAC.I would prob buy more products from them. I just really love MACS recycling program, you dont have to needlessly throw plastic packages out, and you get a complimentary item. Its win win for all, and the environment!

Georgia Avatar

Would you prefer to use the Naked Skin finishing powder or the razor sharp ultra definition finishing power to set your foundation?

Georgia Avatar

Thank you for writing this review and for responding to my comment. I will definitely check out the Naked Skin finishing powder. 😀

Kayla Avatar

Don’t get me wrong, you look stunning as always, but I can’t help but think it looks a little powdery/cakey/heavy on your skin. It’s surprising to me considering that you said it was very light with little coverage! Maybe it’s just me?

Carrie Avatar

I thought the exact same thing. And considering that it’s supposed to be a -finishing- powder it almost looks more like a bronzer! There is a real obvious difference to me that you don’t see with most finishing powders!

Valerie Avatar

I love Urban Decay, I really do, however why are all of their face products always so yellow?! I can’t stand it. Even in the Naked Skin foundation there are far more yellow/neutral tones than pink tones. Until they broaden the range of color I will not be being any of these types of products. Great review though Christine! 🙂

Amber M Avatar

I’m thinking about getting some to go over my BB cream. Medium looks too dark and Light/Medium looks too light. Maybe since it’s super sheer I should get Medium/Light?

Chloe Avatar

I hope they will release a concealer in the Naked range at some point. Will defiantly look into this powder as I am fast running out!

Veronica Avatar

I quite like the look of these, but they really need to expand on the darker end of the spectrum. There’s no way that “deep” shade will work on NC/NW50+ skintones.

rose Avatar

I want to love this because it’s so pretty (even the bag) but… I’m kind of liking the before pic better for finish and also because it looks less flat-masky. The after pic kind of “needs” blush or bronzer or something where it’s more optional in the before as a nude look. Or maybe it’s just me?

Cinzia Avatar

I agree with you that the before picture her cheekbones look nice and dewy. I do think this might suit Christine better as a light application just in her T-zone, but with some highlighter and blush the powdered face would probably look more natural. I think it depends on the look your going for as some like an all matte face.

Danielle Avatar

Yeah, I doubt this would match me without a swatch fest. I’ve had bad luck with UD’s “colored” face powders. 😐 Medium Light looks yellow-y and noticeably lighter than the lightest shade… What happened there?XD Its a bit of the same color in the pan as my NYX Stay Matte compact in Ivory (which is a match ~ ). I like the compact and its a new concept, to me, to sell face powders with little ‘gift bags’. Two things I notice many brands skip: fair(er) shades and deeper shades. I find it annoying because I’m regularly too pale but it’s also irksome that I couldn’t give even a slight suggestion to my deeper friends!

Christine Avatar

NOOO idea. I thought the same when I was staring at all the shades lined-up when I was photographing, and I was like, “HMM, maybe I’m just seeing things!” One of my initial thoughts was that “Dark” didn’t seem dark enough for the deeper end of the spectrum, too.

Alyza Avatar

I want this powder for the shallowest reason: the packaging! It would look fantastic in the new purse I just got, the compact matches the metal hardware on the bag.
This is bad, lol.

Solangel Avatar

I’m just finishing up my Mac Studio Fix and now this comes out…but Kat Von D’s is also going to come out…I hope you get to review that one! One thing I don’t mess around with is face powder. Also, is that really the darkest shade there is? Tsk!

Christine Avatar

Hi Gina!

Honestly, I don’t know if I’ve ever used MAC’s Blot Powder or when the last time was – I have normal-to-dry skin so I just don’t use blot powders in general. I would imagine this would work similarly, since it is very mattifying, though.

Zakia Avatar

I am huge fan of Urban Decay and even bigger fan of the Naked line so i am extremely excited to try this now. Thanks for the review

Emma Avatar

Immediately added to my wishlist! I love the whole look of this, they’ve really gone for a high-end feel here. I hadn’t gone for the liquid foundation because with my oily skin type I really can only get away with a matte finish, but this powder looks perfect for me!

Shanice Avatar

I’d like to have a moment of silence for the packaging. Just to die for. But this gives more of a matte finish then I would want. How do you think this would stack up against MAC MSF Natural?

anne Avatar

I think it looks great on you! I’m tossing between medium – light and medium and i wear 3.0 in the fdn. I already have 3 powders that i wear solo or over liquid/bbs and 2 that are on the lighter end. So im definitely intrigued

anne Avatar

I went and got Medium. they all seemed light when i swatched them, my friend wears 2.0 in the liquid and i think medium light would match her or even the light. i found it to be the perfect finishing powder, as all of mine are mostly powder fdns with medium cvg +/ Even my dior flawless and LM smooth powder that just came out has more cvg. most finishing powders were loose so im glad i liked this one. it blends seamlessly.

Hannah Avatar

I wanted to buy this online but confused on what shade to get. I’m not familiar with those numbers lol. Any recommendations on a NC30-35 skin tone? Thanks!
