Tutorial - Black Ore, Super Black Smokey Eye with Gold Pop
I used Black Ore solar bits with mixing medium on lid, Goldmine eyeshadow on inner lid, Evening Aura eyeshadow (LE) on middle of lid, Antiqued eyeshadow on outer lid, Carbon eyeshadow on outer lid and crease, Femme-fi eyeshadow (LE) above crease and on brow, Goldmine eyeshadow on inner lash line, Black Ore solar bits (LE) on outer lower lash line, Graphblack technakohl on lower lash line, and Plushlash mascara on lashes. I had Other Worldly blush (LE) on cheeks with Daisydust beauty powder to highlight. I wore Brew lipstick with Supreme lipglass (LE) and Pink Grapefruit lipglass (LE).
* These are recommendations for dupes based on permanent colors available — may not necessarily be identical; they are the closest I can think of!
Black Ore = Carbon + Antique Gold reflects glitter; Evening Aura = Juiced + Nylon; Femme-fi = Shroom; Supreme = Chai; Pink Grapefruit = Lychee Luxe
Now, get step-by-step directions on how to get this look for yourself!
1. Wet a small, semi-fluffy brush with a few drops of mixing medium. Tap the brush against the lid insert of Black Ore solar bits to crush them and adhere them to the brush.
2. Start with a clean eye.
3. Apply Black Ore solar bits all over your lid; I usually begin towards the inner lid and work my way out.
4. Pull the color outwards to cover the entire lid area.
5. This is what you should have. (By the way, see how pretty Black Ore is by itself?!)
6. Pick up Goldmine eyeshadow with a 239 brush.
7. Apply Goldmine eyeshadow to your inner lid with the 239 brush.
8. This is what it should look like. If you didn’t get this vibrancy, feel free to go back and grab more Goldmine.
9. Apply Evening Aura eyeshadow to your inner lid using the 239 brush.
10. This is what you should have.
11. Apply Antiqued eyeshadow to your middle/outer lid with the 239 brush.
12. Make sure you also put a little bit into the crease.
13. This is what you should have.
14. Using a separate fluffy shadow brush (another 239 would work), apply Carbon eyeshadow to your outer lid.
15. This is what you should have.
16. Apply the residual Carbon into your outer crease.
17. This is what you should have.
18. Apply Femme-fi eyeshadow to your inner brow bone with the 239 brush.
19. Pull the highlight color outwards to cover the entire brow bone.
20. Drop a little lower, and blend Femme-fi into the harsh black crease.
21. This is what you should have.
22. Pick up more Goldmine eyeshadow and apply it to your inner crease using the 239 brush.
23. This is what you should have.
24. Using a flat liner brush, put a drop of mixing medium on it, and then pick up some Black Ore solar bits and apply to the outer lower lash line.
25. This is what you should have.
26. Apply Goldmine eyeshadow to your inner lower lash line using the 239 brush (or 219 if you have it).
27. This is what you should have. Add your favorite mascara and liner to finish.
Ohhh…very pretty! Solar bits look I lot more practical than I thought. I might have to reconsider these.
Thanks, Katie! They are fun for a smoky look!
Very pretty Christine!
You know I think Black tied can also be a dupe of Black Ore but instead of gold pearl, it’ll be silver. What do you think?
Thanks, Joyce! It’s similar, but the smoothness would be different, IMO!
Thanks for the tut Christine! It looks really pretty.
No problem, Shefali! Happy to help.
I think you read my mind! I was just dying for a tutorial on that look! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
My pleasure, Heather 🙂
Nice! What are your camera settings. I can’t seem to get nearly as good with my makeup tutorials. Any advice?
Hey Trisha! Have you read this? http://www.temptalia.com/tips-tutorials-how-to-take-a-good-close-up-photo
Great tut, Christine 😀 I can’t believe how much fall out there is even with MM! Or maybe it’s just more noticeable because it is black.
Thanks, Stacey! You know, you can see it in the photos, but that’s about all the fall out there is, and it only happens initially. It’s not *too* bad.
this is my first comment and i’ve been your reader for a year now and i can’t help but compliment beautiful face..smoky looks best on you! i love it! thanks for the tutorial..
Thank you so much for coming out to comment 🙂
Wow. Very Beautiful! Damn! I might go out and get this. I’ve been looking for a pretty smokey black color.
Thanks, Dawn! Oh, wow!
beautiful!! It really makes me wanna try solar bits!! I’m just afraid of what a mess I’ll make. Oh btw thanks for the suggestions on the new colors. I work overnight at a mall that has a MAC and I took a look as best as I could at the colors and you were right on the colors I should get. Thanks sssooo much!!!
Thanks so much, Molly! The mess isn’t TOO bad, and as long as you put it on before foundation, it’s easy to clean up.
Wow!I love this tutorial!Unluckily there is no MAC store in my city 🙁 but I’m planning to order Blackore and Evening Aura e/s by telephone! I’m a huge fan of the smokey eyes makeup and I wear almost everyday, even to go to university. Would you recommend this new pigment for the day or would it be just “too much”? Better for the night? Thanks! Valentina
Thanks, Valentina! That sucks that you can’t go down and check it out 🙁
To be honest, it is QUITE dark, but you could get away with it in the day time if you lightened it up or only used it for the crease area.
Gorgeous! This is an awesome tutorial and you seriously have me reconsidering picking up a jar of the Solar Bits.
Thanks, Jude! lol, they can be really pretty… at least Black Ore. The others seemed passable to me, though.
preeeety! did you use antiqued as a dupe for time and space? i heard they were similar
It’s not really a dupe, but they work in place of each other, sure!
Luving ur tutorial, from long time i have been looking for such a pretty black smokey look and u gave the secrets,Thank.Ill definitely go for it The Solar bits.
Zzainy..
Thank you so much, Zainy! 😀
Girl, you rock the smokey look. I love all the shadows, the whole look is really “metallic”
Thanks, doll ;D Glad you liked it!
Pretty!
Thanks, Lydia!
WOW!!! I love this look sooooo much!!! It’s absolutely gorgeous!!
Thanks so much, Brittany!
wow wow wow, it looks great!!!
i want to go out and copy this right away
thanks so much for the tutorial
Thanks so much, Genevra!
hello Christine,
I found that Arena is very similar to Evening aura. I have both of them and Arena is a satin so it is not as vibrant as evening aura. They are both nice colors, evening aura might be a little bit brighter. 🙂 Did we get to see what you got from neo-sci fi?
Thanks for this heads up, Michelle! I do have Arena, actually!
Yep, I shared what I got in my review, along with photos of the few things I picked up 🙂
Wow… I LOVE THIS LOOK. 🙂 🙂 🙂 And you look gorgeous wearing it.
This convinced me that I would rather buy Black Ore solar bits instead of one of the lighter ones. I plan to buy all of the Neo Sci Fi shadows now, plus the Black Ore solar bits and maybe a couple other eyeshadows from the “regular” selection for my monthly haul on Tuesday (that’s payday for me – I actually budget for a makeup haul every month *wink*) I can’t wait!!!!!!
(Thankfully I will still get in under MAC’s free shipping offer ’til the 31st… we have NO MAC stores here, only counters that may or may not have what I want…)
Thank you so much, Jennifer! Black Ore is the most “unique” one, I guess, lol. At least, it’s my favorite!
Hhmm, now I really want solar bits, lol!! This is beautiful, especially on you! Also, I picked up Time & Space, Magnetic Fields, and Femme-Fi. I was a little reluctant to buy evening Aura since I really have no orange and I don’t know what would look best with it from what I already have. To tell you the truth I really only like Magnetic Fields and Femme-Fi. Time & Space reminds me too much of woodwinked . . to me it’s kind of a combination between that and tempting. I also picked up the refinishing prep & prime for lips, and the exfoliator. I love them both!!
lol, Molly! I think Black Ore is worth checking out at the very least!
Time & Space is definitely similar to Wodowinked, though.
Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial! It’s amazing how different the eyeshadow looks with the yellow and black shirts on. I think it looks better with the black. You look stunning and so dramatic!!! I’ll definietly be rocking this look to work since I have to wear black. I usually do crazy bright colors and combinations, so it’s great to have some new inspiration!
No problem, Stephanie! I know, right? It’s such a wonder 🙂
F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S!!!! Now this is what I call a smokey eye!!! =D
Thank youuu, Chloe!!
hiii christine, what r u apply on your hair,ur hair looks so strong and silky shine.what r u do for their volume.plz tell me and u look gorgeous really!!!!
Hey Sidra! Honestly, I just use regular shampoo by Herbal Essences and not much else.
Thank you!
Thank you for reply.
Please! can you tell me the product’s name?
You have Really Healty and Shiny Hairs.
Bye
Hi Sidra,
I use Herbal Essence’s Long Term Relationship Shampoo & Conditioner.
Hi!
May I know if solar bits is till available? =)
Hi Wy! Check maccosmetics.com or your local MAC store/counter!
you look so pretty! but solar bits is too chunky looking for me. also no offense but this site is kind of confusing with how menus and things are organized. you have to much info but hard to find.
I’m sorry you find the site so confusing!
Man, seeing this I really want to get Black Ore, too bad it was an LE
Aww! A good black will do it for you, though.
your mascara is quite clumpy, perhaps consider upgrading? it looks atrocious!
Do you have a recommendation, Sean?
that looks amazing!
Thanks, Lauren!
i love this the most..
i have small eyes. do u know what best eye make up for me?
thanks
Thanks, Chichi! Try using shimmery off white on your inner corners to help open up your eyes. Line either top or bottom, but not both lash lines!
This is an AWESOME smokey eye on you!! Do you recommend a certain shimmery off white eye liner?
Thanks, Diana! UD Ye-yo is pretty nice 🙂
I love this look! How much does the black ore cost?
Thanks, Rachael!
I don’t think it’s available anymore, but when it was, I believe it was around $20!
OMG. This is absolutely a unique and beautiful smokey eye. I never imagined gold and black would look soo good!
I’ve only recently started reading your website and you have amazing tutorials. It truly is expanding my use for my MAC palettes. I’ve actually doubled since I came onto your website ;P
Thanks so much, Li Ming! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the site, and I hope you’ll continue to like it!

Thanks, Leanna! 🙂
I love the tutorial! Now I can get the look just right! But where do you get your make up? 😀

YAY! So glad it worked, Simone!
