Any dior mascara or benefit mascara! Totally pales in comparison to Lancome Hypnose
TOTALLY agree about all Dior mascaras, they’re ALL hype. But we differ on Benefit..BadGal Lash rocks my world.

i agree with diorshow mascara but i love diors blackout waterproof, it last thru me crying at the wedding held in 89 degree heat and the dunk in the pool afterward without one smudge.

I’m going to say…Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks. It’s a good concept gone bad in my opinion. True to their name, they are annoyingly shimmery and they are also extremely overpriced for the quality. I’ve given them so many chances, but I just don’t know why people like them!
I’ve never even tried these but every time i hear people mention them i just think of picking up a brick and rubbing it on my face – scratchy! so the name alone has put me off!
MAC Studio Fix Powder. It clogs up my pores and makes me breakout like crazy!!

Same! I started using this 2 years ago and it’s my HG foundation. It’s the only thing that gives me good coverage and won’t break me out.
I don’t think I should say this because EVERYONE will disagree, but I’ll go ahead and be a rebel. MAC Pigments (to me) are overrated. I bought Vanilla and Melon and ended up returning both. I really didn’t like them.

Agree. The milling of the pigments is also so inconsistent between each color, it’s annoying to get a pigment that hasn’t been milled finely or well considering the cost.
Agreed. Partially because the inconsistency of milling between colors, but also just because I feel like pressed eyeshadow is so much easier to work with, why even bother with pigment? It’s such a pain!

studio fix fluid from MAC – i know many people (including you, Christine) love it, but its just so drying and thick and makes me face cakey and i feel like i’m suffocating!

For me its Philosophy Purity made Simple Cleanser. Everyone raved about it, and I was so excited to get it but when I did I was not impressed at all.
oh man, i have to disagree with this one. i love it! it melts away my makeup and cleanses my face all in one easy step!
Yeah, I’m with you Meg – it’s the best cleanser I’ve ever tried! I’ve gone through one of those HUGE pump bottles and am about to buy another!
I have to disagree as well, but it is a bit unfair to say there is a ‘best’ cleanser because skin from person to person is so different.
NARS Orgasm… pshh.. hate this stuff,not pigmented & so overhyped..
Bobbi Brown shimmerbricks too.. so OTT shimmery & the powder is not so finely milled..
ita about Nars Orgasm. And extend that to most of Nars products. Never kept anything I’ve purch from them. Too much work to make it look good!
I agree! NARS Orgasm blush is gritty and not a very unique color. The lipsticks smell like crayons after a while.
One of the things I hate about NARS Orgasm is that why in hell would Francois Nars want to get women all over the world saying the word ‘orgasm’ over and over? Why would he name a blush after sex? Ugh.

That happened to mine too! I had 3 of them and after 2 years, they smelled yucky and were drying up. My MAC lipsticks from 10 years ago still smell like vanilla and feel creamy.
I checked Orgasm because all of the fuss and was totally unimpressed. So yes, I’d say it’s overrated. Like most of Nars products to me.
Agree, I have it brand new, and every time I try it, I keep hating it. I guess it doesn’t work for everyone.
I found Givenchy Prismissime (9 colour) eyeshadows a bit of a disappointment, I’ve already swapped 3 of them, and will probably get rid of all of them eventually. They are nowhere near in quality to Dior eyeshadows. The Givenchy Prismissime face powders aren’t that great either.
Well I don’t really try to follow a trend just because a whole bunch of women like it but what is really overhyped is any palette from Coastal Scents–88 shimmer, matte, WHATEVER!
I really think CS’s stuff is cheap, and, while I’m cheap, I don’t like cheap things. Those shadows are just gross! I bought the 88 shimmer palette and none of those colors “suit” my darker skin (around NW40-43). UGH! Cheapo products–I’ll pay for MAC and MUFE any day!

ITA!!! I’m NC50 and I’m not at all impressed with any of the shadows.
maybe they don’t suit darker skin tones? i think the shadows are very well pigmented for the low cost. its my go to palette when i need a funky color
I never understood the rush about those palettes. To me they look like the cheap stuff we find on stores for Christmas. :-/
I have to disagree! i know what you mean by looking like the department store eye shadows but seriously the pallette works wonders! its not the best makeup in the world, but a LOT of the shadows go on better than many mac eyeshadows i have.. and there are a lot of beautiful colors.. it is a wonderful thing to buy especially for its price, if you want to try new things, explore with makeup, have an array of colors without buying every individual one… some of the shadows are chalky but not all of them.. i really like it 🙂
I have nw43 skin and I have the 88 matte and satin pallette and it works great I use the blues and greens primarily and whenever I wear it people always ask me what eyeshadow is that. In one day I had like 10 people ask and they worked at mac and dior. I use high end brands but I love this for colors that I normally wouldn’t buy for everyday use.
Dazzleglasses! I really don’t see why people like these some much. They’re crazy sticky and not pigmented at all, which annoys me. Plus, its like someone threw craft glitter on my mouth after eating fried chicken or something! Kudos to those that can get dazzlegrease;) to work, but I won’t be buying any of these again. They just don’t work on me.
I agree, the glitter goes everywhere on me and they are too damn sticky!
I agree. I recently bought my first one and it was a dissapointment. Yes, the color is pretty long lasting, but it IS too sticky and I always need a mirror for the application.

Feline Kohl Power…I bought it because I had read so many rave reviews on it, but I practically can’t wear it, since it smudges like hell on me and I don’t even have particulary oily eyelids!
I agree!!! Feline is smudge city on me!
Dazzleglasses, Great Lash mascara, and mascara primers in general. And Smolder eye kohl. It smudges onto my upper eyelid no matter what I do. Setting it with black eyeshadow just means there’s more to smudge.

Yep, had the same issue with Teddy Eye Kohl. Smudge city even with setting it. Yet you see all the ladies doing tutorials using eye kohl here, eye kohl there. No way it stays where they applied after they stop the tutorial. It looks good for like a minute & then..ick!
great lash, la mer moisturizer, diorshow, hope in a jar, revlon lipstick, revlon colorstay foundation, almay eyeliner, covergirl concealer
Hope in a jar….Felt like it stayed on top of my skin and didn’t absorb . But I know a few people who loved it.
ya agreed…it made my skin have little bumps around it!! haaaate it.
For me it would have to be the Costal Scents 88 palette (waves to Desiree) I am a NW40/NW43 and these colors look chalky and ashy on my darker skin. They don’t last no matter what base/primer I use. I big thumbs down for me.
I’ll also say dazzleglasses. Did not like the sparkle left on and around my mouth when they wear off. BE buxom lips do the same thing without all the glitter mess.
Also, any high end mascara. Drugstore mascara has served me well.
Ita with both – I hate the glitter left behind with the dazzleglasses! And drugstore mascara rocks! It has saved me so much money 😉
Yeah..dazzle glasses are total crap. I bought three or four when they first came out and they’re just sitting somewhere in my house expiring.
Prescriptives The Present primer! I’m actually confused about whether I might be doing something wrong when applying this. i heard so many great things but on me it accentuates my pores, leaves white gunk on my face, and basically looks horrible!

for me those MSFs (not natural) are overhyped…i mean if you have one from each color family…its ok…simply coz, they all look same….and accentuate my pores…
Close second is dazzleglass…like one or two is fine for applying just in middle of lips for some sheen…i dunno why the whole bunch is needed…

and about dazzleglasses too, that’s because I just don’t think you need all of them because they appear mostly too sheer to see any difference.
Try Love Alert Dazzleglass, it’s a sheer kind of red, lots of pigment, it’ the only DG I have 🙂
I hear ya about the MSF’s. I like the Natural ones but the shimmer ones…yuck. Anyone I’ve seen wear them, especially the MAC ladies, look horrible with them on. They look all greasy & irridescent w/ enlarged pores. Gross..so not for me.
MAC makeup brushes. While I was on vacation I mostly gave up on using brushes to apply my makeup because of time issues. I used my fingers and my eye makeup was so much easier to blend and applied better. It was also so much faster and easier.
I’ve learned that I never needed over priced brushes to look good.
that problem may lie in your technique because the right tools help you achieve the perfect look. most mac brushes give your great quality for the price. but there are no rules to makeup
Good for you! But it really depends your style, the color you use and what you want to achieve. For smokey eyes, I don’t think it’d give a nice result without a brush. Also, I would never try to apply my Fluideline with my fingers. 😉
It’s a close tie between NARS Orgasm (not pigmented enough and way way too glittery), Studio Fix Fluid and Studio Fix Powder (both of them go on incredibly thick and cakey)!
MAC mineralize satinfinish fluid foundation–> the most terrible foundation ever for me…tried so many colours, it still shows up orange and it just runs of my face within an hour…not fond of any mineralized make up really. I don’t understand the hype.
PhotoFinish face primer by Smashbox — I even got the “light” oil free variety — didn’t help keep my oil at bay at all and didn’t feel like it helped the foundation apply. I was so disappointed.
Also I am not impressed with any blush, bronzer with too much shimmer. I only want shimmer on the lips and a little on they eyes. I think shimmer goes overboard sometimes!!
I agree! I got the regular kind, because I have super dry skin in the winter, but it made my face crazy greasy and break out, which rarely happens.

Prep + Prime…. I tried a free sample and it made me break out beyond belief!! Ugh!
Also, Dazzleglasses. I want to love them – I think because they’re so hyped – but I just don’t like all that glitter and sparkle!

Me three! I just started using prep + prime and I love the way it feels on my skin but I can start to see that I’m breaking out 🙁

NARS Orgasm because it barely shows up on me & I hate chunky glitter & shimmer on my face.
MAC’s Kohl pencils. Bought Teddy Kohl liner cause it was such a pretty color & all it did was run under my eyes even after trying to set it. Not into the raccoon look at all.
The pencils are terrible! I wear for like five mintues and its already clumping to the corner of my eye.
Urban Decay Primer Potion!!! There are so many other good primers out there and this one is just not one of the better of them. Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer is wayy better than UDPP.
I’m going to have to disagree, it works out very great for me and I can’t see myself buying a $20 eye primer when all the other ones in competition with are are $12-$16.
DiorShow Blackout. I love Dior, but this mascara is not very good (for the proce, is awful)

Oh no! Guerlain is my all time favorite!! I love everything they make and the quality surpasses EVERY other high end brand (esp. for skin care). What have you tried from them?
I’m not sold on the brand but here and there, they can have some nice products (like summer lipglosses). I hate the taste of KissKiss glosses though. Really awful. But in general there is a little something good in every place. 🙂
I love Guerlain, it’s a fantastic brand, I adore the Meteorites products and the eyeshadows and the glosses are lovely too. Not to mention the double ended mascara, I’ve bought 3 I love them so much! 🙂
i kinda feel like dazzleglasses are a bit overrated
i mean the colors look great in the tube but they tend to come out quite sheer
i cannot justify paying 18.00!!!!!! for a lipgloss when the quality isnt even that good
the only thing i like about them is the sparkle and the WAND! I LOVE BRUSH WANDS!!!

I won’t lie: if I never bought a Dazzleglass it’s because they’re so tiny, tinier than a regular lipgloss and so pricey. Also I checked them at the store and didn’t truly get the hype either.

Im actually a fan of bare minerals. Unlike MAC’s foundation, Bare Minerals helped clear up my skin instead of making me break out. But, not everyone’s skin is the same so it depends how each product works.
ita! I spent $60 on the starter kit last summer. Not only was I disappointed in the foundation – it literally covered NOTHING & I basically had to use my concealer as a foundation before putting this on, but I also could NOT believe the horrendous quality of their brushes. I’ve never had a makeup brush hurt my face so much. I definitely don’t understand the hype.
I totally think YSL Touche Eclat is way overrated. It’s just a light concealer. I don’t get the hype at all!

Maybelline Great Lash mascara. This stuff flakes everywhere, clumps like crazy, and just sits there on my lashes. It doesn’t lengthen, thicken, curl or condition – nada. And STILL it gets featured in beauty magazines every year saying it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Why do so many love the worst mascara on the planet?
CG’s Lash Blast mascara – It flakes SO bad, gets in my eyes and burns them to hell, and I end up having to wash it off every time.
I agree! It didn’t really flake or anything for me, but it didn’t do much of anything else for my lashes, either.

Great Lash, because everyone on MakeupAlley is negatory in their reviews, yet all the magazine editors love it.
Well, there are a few of us MUA’ers who still love it! We do get clobbered on boards if we say so, lol. I’ve tried so many HE brands for mascara, and they don’t seem like all that. I just use my curler, GL wp, my MAC #205 to push through lashes and coat, & my metal lash comb. No problem. Stays put, no flakes. On until I take it off at night. Easy to toss every few months.
MAC foundations are WAY overrated. They are so bad for your skin with its high level of cyclomethicone and dimethicone.
MAC Angel, Blankety and other lipsticks are overrated. It washes alot of people out and they love it for some reason. It makes many people look zombified.
i agree on the lipstick thing. MAC Myth?!?!? Why? Just slap some concealer on your lips & call it a day if that’s what your looking for. Ugh, hate it. What guy looks at a girl with zombie whited out lips & thinks “that’s hot!” NONE!
Lol. Yeah..I’ve never understood the allure of Myth. I’ve had so many MAC reps try to sell that to me and I’m like…uhhh….no. In my opinion the first legitimate super nude color that MAC came out with that didn’t look like a creepy concealer was and is Creme d’ Nude. Myth should be discontinued.
I got Blankety — and I do find I have to wear a pink-ish lip liner with it and put a lipglass on top (love it with Oyster Girl on top). Then it is really wearable and pretty — but I agree, on its own, it is tough to pull off . . .
Sorry, but i don’t understand the hype over MAC’s St Germain and Lavender Whip – everyone i’ve seen (pale, fair, tan, etc) does not really seem to look fab with it … i feel its too milky purple to look flattering on any skin tone
Yes!!! I totally agree. Those two colours look horrible on EVERYONE! I have not seen even one person that can pull that look off.
I’ve just thought of another one: NARS cosmetics on the whole. I mean I have some of their products and they’re fine, but they’re not amazing, the compacts/boxes are dead boring and their Orgasm lipgloss is very blah. Just don’t see why anyone would want to buy loads of their products at those prices…
Yeah….I agree. The formulas from blush to gloss to eyeshadow to whatever else is all horrible. The lip glosses smell like rotten plastic and the blushes go on like sidewalk chalk. I don’t understand how it’s survived this long. More power to Francois Nars I suppose.
diorshow mascara is BRUTAL! you’re right! i have long eyelashes so it should be easy to get a dramatic result, but this just produces very very simple basic darkening, except dry looking. ughh, just crap
Maybelline Great Lash mascara. I constantly see this in magazines as being the number 1 mascara, but it does nothing for my lashes.
Bare Minerals foundation. It’s not too bad, but I’ve tried mineral foundations that are just as good, if not better, that cost much less.
I do like Diorshow mascara, I’ve never had a problem with it, but it is expensive! NARS orgasm is kinda meh on me. Lavender whip, Fashion Mews, and Saint Germain lipstick are loved by loads of people, but am NC40 and blonde, so the pastely lips make me look like a cartoon.
First of all, i completely ADORE diorShow Blackout! I tried so many other mascaras, but always ended up buying Blackout again. And the waterproof version is really(!) waterproof. Although, i tried Mac plushlash lately and i really liked it!
Same story for Studio Fix Fluid 🙂 People always ask me how i achieve such a flawless complexion, and SFF is a big help for me.
I think Touche éclat is overrated, idem with Rimmel mascaras.
mac pigments. i really have no use for them because i hate loose eyeshadow. the only one i like is vanilla and that is because i like it as a cheek highlighter.
nars orgasm blush… way too glittery for me… nars products are just too pricey and their packaging sucks!!! i hate the rubber like casing… it looks really dirty.

Covergirls Lash Blast, I just doesn’t work for me, it makes my lashes really hard and I look like a tarantula with it on.
It’s funny you don’t like Lash Blast, because that is seriously the best mascara I’ve ever used. Maybe its your application technique? I make sure I curl my lashes really good and apply the mascara without letting it dry. I have really fine eyelashes–a lot of them and they’re long–and LB really thickens and lengthens. And I’ve tried tons of mascaras and this just works the best, no flaking either. To each her own, I guess 🙂
mac msfs. i personally think they’re a waste of money because you can get a very similar effect using a shimmery eyeshadow and guess what, nobody is going to look at your face and say, ur wearing an msf or ur wearing an eyeshadow because you wont be able to tell the difference. yea they’re nice to look at, but id rather put my money into things that are distinct and make an impression.
recently all ive been using to highlight my cheeks are shimmery shadows. and i own cheek highlighters.
i agree 100%. on top of it, i never could understand how people could own more than one of the msf’s. you can’t tell me they each look different once applied cause they definitely don’t. spending over $20 on a product that has “pretty veining” is just beyond me.
Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner pencil. Everyone uses them. I bought both the sets and they are amazing on the lashline but totally suck on the waterline. I put it on right before I go to school. And when I get there (which takes around half an hour) its already smudged!!!! I don’t get why its A MUST! Does anyone know an eyeliner that WILL stay on the waterline.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??
I agree with you 100% Temptalia! Diorshow just doesn’t do it for me. I gave it two chances and really…the brush is unwieldy, the formula is flaky and clumpy, and it’s expensive! No thanks…
That Maybelline mascar in the pink tube that is always on the best of beauty lists with some lame note about how the drugstore classic remains a favorite. It’s crap, and who is really using it anyway?
I also agree that Dior mascara is awful – gave me racoon eyes. BadGal masacara did too. I think some of use have more flaking issues than others!!
I’m curios about all the people bashing NARS Orgasm – Is it the blush or the multiple that is over-rated, or both?
ahh i will probably get hit for some of the ones i will say but…
Mac paint pots.. well i only have one which is a neutral base and it does NOT help my eye shadow at all…
also Too faced shadow insurance or whaetver its called (LOL im embarassed i forgot the name and i used it today). My mom bought it for me b.c i wanted to see if it would work and it doesn’t do much either.. it could just be my skin but NO primers seem to work for me
also, some of the mac brushes, i asked the lady which one would pack on the most eyeshadow, so i bought it (forgot the name) and it doesn’t pack on much of anything and i know its a popular brush..
i just have no luck with keeping my eyeshadows on=\
I would have to say Smashbox PhotoFinish Primer. I used the light one because of my oily skin and it did nothing except break me out.
Also, Covergirl Lashblast! It didn’t give me those amazing lashes it seems to give others. I much prefer Max Factor 2000 Calorie.
Oh and Revlon Colorstay liner in black. Doesn’t last all day and smudges. I’d rather buy the Urban Decay Liner!
So funny that you don’t like Lash Blast but like MF 2000 Calorie. They are identical mascaras from the formula right down to the wand. Max Factor totally bit off Cover Girl. They saw their success & just copied it slapping a new name on it. Those mascaras are exactly the same.

Coastal Scents, EcoTools and Sigma Makeup brushes are totally overrated! Also ELF Cosmetics, both the makeup line and the brushes. I never get the hype about them.
