Temptalia Asks You - How do you choose a lip combination?

How do you choose a lip combination? Are there any tips or tricks when it comes to selecting the right color, gloss, etc.?

I personally pick from one family of colors I know works for certain eyeshadow shades. I find corals to be excellent with nearly every color, especially greens; while super dark smoky eyes or really dramatic dark blues need paler, pink or peach neutral colors. I find blues work great with pinks or peaches, when they’re lighter rather than darker. I always like to have a slightly purple lip if I’m going for pink or purple on the eyes (or might go with a full on bright pink – just depends).

I guess I base my eye color on my clothes color and my lip color on my eye color. Also to complicate things, I recently dyed my hair very red, which changed how all the colors appear on my skin!

I agree Christine, corals and greens are great; both warm shades. Warm eyes get a warm lip. I’m using the warm Viva Glam holiday palette for this now–so easy. If I’m wearing a cooler or neutral eye, like a plum or taupe, I will go for a neutral lip. I need to play up the warmth in my skin tone (and I don’t have much, but the new haircolor helps).

I think the only situation now where I wear a pink lip is if I’m in turquoise or teal blue shadow, which isn’t very often.

i make the same choices too but i have a habit of picking up my favorite shades of plum colored lipsticks. i have the same warm viva glam palette, too. if i’m not sure or if i don’t have time to decide, those colors are neutral colors for my complexion. i think i can wear any color with those too. and i have to have a lipgloss to go with the lipstick, doesn’t always have to be a matching color. which is why my next mission is to find a sheer gloss with bits of gold or a sheer gold gloss. any suggestions?

I use a lot of gold/bronze eyeshadow because I wear dark wine/red lipstick a lot and blue eyeshadow (as much as I love it) doesn’t go with that look.

Smoky eyes are a favorite as well, so I wear Revealing or Lovechild, depending on the color combo. If I want a truly neutral lip, I use MAC Touch or Clarins 610, on top of MAC Oak or Whirl, respectively.
