What are your tips for making your base/complexion products last longer?

Lately, I’ve been trying to dust a little translucent powder onto my skin first, then a spritz of setting spray, followed by face primer and foundation. This particular order is what I saw from makeup artist Jordan Liberty on Instagram, and the method does seem to work but haven’t really tested...

How do you stay excited about beauty?

How do you stay excited about beauty?

I use the enthusiasm/excitement of my readers to motivate me, so when they’re interested in a new product, trend, brand, or whatever, that fuels me because what I enjoy most about what I do is helping people make better purchasing decisions and loving what they buy. I also understand that brands...

Do you ever tire of beauty (or get into a rut)?

Do you ever tire of beauty (or get into a rut)?

I go in cycles where sometimes product releases feel a little “been there, done that” but still really enjoy playing with new products to see if they’re better, and there are a lot of brands/types of aesthetics out there now that it’s harder to get truly tired. I try to focus less on my...

What are three things you'd tell to a skincare newcomer?

You’ll want to take claims that sound too good too be true with a grain of salt; products may be effective but often take time to work, may give results but not WOW! kind of results, and some claims just seem super fluffy. You don’t need a routine with 20 products in it; it’s better to start...

If you’re very, very new, try to get to counters/stores to swatch and play, so you can test a lot in person to see what kind of things intrigue you, what works, what doesn’t. You want to spend less as you learn your tastes and figure out your needs. You don’t need to have everything that’s...

Did you like (or love) makeup when you first started using it?

Did you like (or love) makeup when you first started using it?

Oh, yes; for me, it was instant love. I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup when I was growing up, so I first really experienced it as a college freshman… and it was just a head-over-heels kind of love.

What were some of the first skincare products you purchased?

I know my mom bought Clinique’s famous three-step system when I was a teen, but I can’t remember what the first skincare products I actually purchased were… I want to say MAC because that was my go-to brand, so something like Prep + Prime, Strobe, Cleanse-Off, etc.!

What were some of the first makeup products you purchased?

I believe it was a bunch of makeup from Benefit and then a few eyeshadows from MAC – I remember Benefit Show Offs! and an eyeshadow brush (the latter I still have) along with MAC Amber Lights, Antiqued, and Bronze (I think those were the three).

What do you wish you had known about skincare when you first got into it?

What do you wish you had known about skincare when you first got into it?

1.) Don’t believe all the claims (in fact, take them with heaping mountains of salt!). 2.) SUNSCREEN IS NOT OPTIONAL. 3.) Use a good makeup remover to thoroughly remove your makeup!

What do you wish you had known about makeup when you first got into it?

1.) Expensive does not equal high quality. 2.) Don’t be afraid to mix and match across brands. 3.) Brushes are worth the investment (not necessarily the most expensive are required, just that the right tools for your technique + features can go a long way).
