Sheer Lipstick

Rave: I like that sheerer lipsticks tend to be creamier, more hydrating, and have a smoother finish on my lips. Semi-rant: I personally prefer my formulas to be more buildable–I don’t need full-on opacity but need closer to medium coverage or else they just run together and look a bit too much like lip balm (and in that case, I’d rather just wear lip balm!). The other downside is some of those formulas can last 2-3 hours and need so much reapplication!

Lip Sets

Rave: In general, mostly raves from me — they’re often a great way to get a good variety of color/finish in a formula one enjoys without paying full price. In fact, a lot of them are travel-sized, which is still plenty of product, and I’d rather spend less upfront and replace if and when I ever need to! Rant: Sometimes they’re TOO small and can easily break at the base, and then other times sets feel redundant – like a beige, red, etc.

Mega Makeup Palettes

Rave: They can offer a ton of variety in a single product, which can take the guess work out of creating looks–as long as they aren’t actually massive in width/length, they can be easy grab-and-go palettes for travel, too. Rant: They take forever to test/review/add dupes for! It also seems like larger palettes tend to have more inconsistency/under-perform compared to a more edited 12-pan palette.

Makeup Reviews

Rave: They can be extremely useful in navigating a world with a relentless stream of new products and a endless catalog of existing products. They can cut through the hype/buzz about a product or help set expectations so that the purchase is more in line with our preferences. Rant: I find reviews that are solely critiquing based on how the color works on their skin frustrating, since there are things like wear, application, coverage, etc. that can be talked about that actually go to the heart of whether it’s a good or bad product (because the review is going to be read by people with different coloring and needs!).

I’m not sold on them as I’m never sure they’re really doing anything – I tend to use actual setting sprays more than I do just facial mists, but they sure do feel nice!

Dewy Foundation

I prefer to set my foundation, so I tend to prefer a more natural finish as opposed to full-on matte (or else it gets too matte!). I like a little dewiness so that skin can look like skin but not to the point where I’m shiny everywhere!

Glitter Highlighter

As long as it doesn’t travel EVERYWHERE within a few hours, I enjoy it! The other downside is sometimes if the particles are too sparse or too large, it can look like “dirt” on cheeks instead of glittery goodness.

I think it’s underrated, but it can be hard to do well! I like a good, buildable coverage blush that’s more of a cream-to-powder finish than true cream, as I do prefer it to set!

Spring Makeup Launches (2019)

I wouldn’t say it’s been particularly remarkable this season in terms of things that I’ve found and loved (overall), BUT there has been a slow down in releases–at least that’s how it feels to me, with respect to eye products–so that’s been nice (sort of).

I like the finish, but I think they need some dewiness/luminosity to them so they don’t emphasize lip texture/lines.
